I’ve always wanted an electric cello shaped like a Gibson Explorer. And I don’t even play the cello!
As for the bass, I’m considering developing a good left-hand technique and buying a monophonic synth, like this one

That said, it's pricey for a starter. The Peavey Millenium BXP is a surprisingly decent bass for the money, and that's coming from someon who can't stand Peavey's instruments in general. My personal preference for low-cost is for Schecter or Ibanez. If you go Ibanez, however, avoid this

but its not as pointy

Cool...I'll have to keep that
in mind; that's only about a hundred more than I paid for the bass I got in college (and don't ask me make or model, it's been too long). The Thunderbird is way too rounded; I much prefer the pointiness of the Explorer-type body.
