The title is fairly self explanatory, I'm having trouble thinking of examples that are well written. I mean I know they focus on ongoing stuff, but I can think of a lot more examples for DC than I can for Marvel.

Anything you guys can think of would be great, preferably stuff from the 616 universe. It doesn't matter what format it was originally printed in, just that it's been collected in a graphic novel/trade paperback and can be read with little prior knowledge. So the Dark Phoenix saga is out, as are crossover collections anything with a vol x label.

So far I have; God Loves Man Kills, Marvels, Secret Wars, Secret War, Dr Strange Doctor Doom Triumph and Torment and Marvel Identity Disc.

Am I a good man or a bad man?

Back in the 80s Marvel used to release some cool oversized graphic novels under the Marvel Graphic Novels and Epic imprints, most of which were standalone stories. My favourites of these include:

  • Someplace Strange by Ann Nocenti & John Bolton: A weird, surreal fantasy story where two preteen boys and an 80s punk teen girl encounter all sorts of freaky stuff. Isn't set in the Marvel Universe, but features a deformed monster version of Spider-Man.

  • The Incredible Hulk and the Thing: The Big Change by Jim Starlin & Bernie Wrightson: Essentially a "buddy movie" starring The Thing and Hulk, fun and funny.

  • Amazing Spider-Man: Hooky by Susan K. Putney & Bernie Wrightson: Spider-Man is transported to a fantasy realm where he has to battle icky demons. Works much better than you'd expect Spider-Man to work in a fantasy setting.

These three books (as did some other Marvel 80s graphic novels) feature gorgeous painted art that the oversized format and quality paper made possible. In that respect they look more like European comic albums than regular American comic books.

No mention of God Loves Man Kills or The Death of Captain Marvel?
