We can't add more topics to the Trope Repair Shop until some topics are moved to the Morgue. I know one of the threads I started (the one on Dork Age) has since gone stale, but I'm not sure how many are stale in total, and I'm not sure what procedure is in place for removing stale threads. What can tropers who aren't moderators do to speed up the cleanup?

Complete any work for threads where a consensus was reached, but not acted upon (preferably bumping the thread in the process). Holler about threads that never reached consensus and haven't had posts in months.

I keep assuming that hollering is something you do when a thread has become flame bait.

I guess that means I can at least holler about the Dork Age thread, since I know that one's done with.

Hollering is just asking for mod attention of any kind. In the case of IP and TRS, this usually means asking for crowners to be hooked or completed discussions to be locked.

Not being able to make new TRS threads when the even the work for all the closed threads hasn't been done seems like the sad dilemma of not being able to order the eleventh round of cheeseburgers because our mouth is too full and no-one can see our flailing hands over the stack of burgers.

It's more like . . . Actually, I can't really think of a good metaphor. I know that there is little chance that creating a Trope Repair Shop topic will actually fix a page, but a low chance is still some chance, so I keep creating topics anyways.

What? TRS threads work more often than they don't. The times they don't can usually be attributed to one of

  • The OP doesn't identify what the problem they see is.
  • There's disagreement that the problem identified by the OP is a real problem.
  • The problem being concentrated on is not the real problem. (This most commonly shows up as a thread asking for a rename, when what's needed is a rewrite of the description, a redefinition, a merge, a clean-up, or cutting.)

Regarding that last one, it probably doesn't help that our Trope Repair Shop page basically says "Repairs are done mainly because of trope name issues. See this page for more info.", and said page only has a one-line description of the whole thing.

Not sure what else newcomers are supposed to infer.

Funny coincidence to see that next to the image of Russell in your avatar. XD

That said, there are a lot of TRS thread ideas users have been waiting to make. Perhaps we could loosen the limit so that we can make them while trying to finish the old ones?

Loosening the limit every time someone wants to add a new thread kinda defeats the point of having one in the first place.

How long should the TRS stay open before the limit is lowered 100 again? A week? A month?

Also, how many pages worth of threads should be remaining before the lock is taken off?

I mean, right now, there's 9 pages worth of threads there.

It might be a good idea to move the conversation to this thread, as that's the main thread for discussing the efforts to reduce the TRS backlogs.

Each page is 100 threads. The current cap is 900. Once page number 9 disappears (leaving 9 pages : 0,1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8) it will once again be possible to make new threads. Until the cap goes down again...

I would suggest that if we're going to lower the cap in increments of 100, not to actually lower it until the current count gets down to the fifties range or so. That way it's not so much of a burden when it happens.

The count doesn't go down when it's open. People shove things into the TRS whenever it's open so it stays at where ever we put the cap. It just treads water. Only way to actually lower it is to lower the cap.
