"Never had anything like that happen myself," Alex said, frowning. "Certainly not here."

He swung his chair around. "So, what's there to do at this place, anyways?"

[Rooms]

Qrlil blinked awake again, this time in a rather more sedate fashion, and took a bleary look-and-sniff around the room. It seemed to be later in the morning, and it would probably be time to get up soon.

But not just yet. She curled back up.

Just a little longer...

Going to wait until I can post tomorrow to fully reintroduce her.

Null nodded. "Cold. I don't like the cold either. It's very hard to concentrate when your entire face is frigged and in pain. Luckily, where I live, it doesn't get really cold except for in the midst of the rainy season. I stay indoors for the majority of that, though. However... can't you use some of your experimental magic to shield yourself from the cold? I'm not very good at it, but your magic works differently than mine, so it could be easier for you."

"Alaska," Frank said, slight curiosity showing through his stoic tone. "I hear it's not so bad up there, near the ocean." He shrugged. "But I suppose getting into the old Alaska/Minnesota miserable winter brawl isn't the best use of my time."

Malo looked at Frank in shock. "Wait, there are places colder than Minnesota?"

Frank nodded glumly and said, "yep. Not many, but yep."

Avea looked over at Null, considering for a moment. She was slightly annoyed Null hadn't said hello yet. Then again, Avea hadn't either. Finally, trying to be casual, she said, "hey, Null. How you feeling this morning?"

Xavier shrugged. "I dunno. A bunch of stuff. Tennis, table sports — you know, ping-pong and pool and that kind of stuff — hot springs, simulators that can do pretty much whatever, movies, skydiving, and I'm sure there're jetskis or something here if you want that."

He turned and looked out the window at the sea. "So yeah. Lots of stuff, really."

[Dining]

"I could and I do use magic," said Vincent, waving a hand vaguely, "but it's a pain to have to do it so often. Most days, in fact. I really appreciate air conditioning in cars, now. At least I get to stay out of the cold most of the time."

He turned to Frank. "Not to advocate a Minnesota/Alaska cold-off or anything, but cold is worse for me than it is for you. I'm semi-exoth- semi-cold-blooded, so if I get too cold, I get lethargic and can die more easily."

Vincent frowned. "I think I went to Alaska because of the good careers up there. Yeah, that's it. Well, it seemed like a good idea at the time."

Frank looked over at Vincent and said, "I know what exothermic means."

Julia pointed out, "I didn't!"

Frank looked over at Julia and said, "but you're smart. Sure you could've figured it out." He then looked back at Vincent. "Y'know, I never really thought 'bout moving out of Moose Bend. Got my roots there. Besides, a piece of work named Sigmund Clark would love to turn my town into a toxic waste dump to save a couple bucks." He clenched his fists. "Nasty fellow, that one. You ever see him or his goons, smartest thing you can do is keep your distance."

Julia grimaced and nodded her agreement.

"Ah," Alex said.

He considered a few things to add, but nothing seemed that interesting, so he turned to one of the nearer robots and ordered a glass of orange juice.

There'll be time to figure out how to keep things interesting after I get my vitamins.

[Rooms - Dining]

Eventually, Qrlil came to the conclusion that she would not be going back to sleep anytime soon. She sat up, stretching, and checked the time - it was fairly late in the morning, enough so that she really should be getting up. She smoothed down her robes, brushed off a few flaked scales, and shambled out the door, heading down"stairs" to the dining room.

She's free to talk to anyone who wants, though I might not post a response for a while due to RL issues.

Null raised her eyebrow. "I'm fine, thanks. Er, nice of you to ask me, I suppose."

"I can't understand willingly going somewhere where you can easily die, even if it does have good jobs. But I guess that the cold is easy to avoid - at least, easier to avoid than a large police force that will capture you at sight," she said to Vincent.

Avea smiled at Null and said teasingly, "so, you're just going to sit around these guys and talk with 'em all day?" She looked over at Julia. "We should all do something!"

Julia breathed a sigh of relief. At least Avea wasn't angling for a romantic rendezvous. Yet. She said, "uh, I'd be up for it, but I think Null would be just fine 'sitting around and talking with these guys all day.' Still, me and you should definitely find something to do. I'm sure Null will be fine without you around."

Well, I know what I'm not going to tell them, now.

"I've learned not to take too many chances when using biggish words," said Vincent, shrugging. "Yeah, Frank, you knew, and you might've been able to figure it out, Julia, but it's amazing how many people don't know. Most people have an idea of what 'cold-blooded' means, though."

He sighed and rubbed his temples. "It probably seems worse to me, since I'm a scientist, but it's mind-boggling how dumb people can be. Like thinking using five 20%-off coupons on five different purchases means they'll get a hundred percent off. I mean, really? Come on, people!"

[Dining]

"If you don't mind me asking," said Xavier, "what do you? The job group here is rather... eclectic. I'm an arcanoarchaeologist. It's basically archaeology with a magical bent."

He paused. "But a lot of people don't want to tell what they do, so if you don't, hey, that's fine. I just figure it can't hurt to ask."

"Ah," Alex said again, taking a sip of his orange juice. "I'm not too familiar with the doctrine of arcanoarchaeology, but I'm always interested to meet a fellow sorcerer, or whatever they call it where you come from."

He took another sip. "As for my job, it's... a bit of this and that, really. Not a conventional job in the sense of what most people have."

Frank nodded and said, "I see your point. Fair enough. I just don't like it when people hear 'Moose Bend' and think country bumpkin. Law degrees aren't easy. But no harm done." He gave a slight smile, and added, "'course, that's what folk like me are for. Somebody's gotta make sure nobody gets taken advantage of."

Malo looked at Frank and shook her head. She smiled fondly and said, "from what I've seen, you put up with too much from people." Frank just shrugged, and stole a sip of Malo's beer. She made no effort to stop him.

"Hmm," said Xavier vaguely. "Sorcerer-for-hire, then? Kinda-sorta? Or not really?" He tapped his chin, thinking.

"In any case, would you mind sharing an example of what you do? Because now you've got me interested, for better or worse. Or, you know, whatever."

[Dining]

Vincent nodded. "I know the feeling. I tell people I live in Alaska, and they immediately think snow and Eskimos and not much else. It doesn't really help that Anvik isn't that much of a town; I make up more than one percent of the entire population. Alaska isn't really the kind of place you think of people living in, you know? Yeah, you know there are people there, but you don't really realize it."

He jerked a thumb towards Xavier. "Xavier's got it similar, although not nearly as badly, and he doesn't care about it. Vermilion in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Whitefish Point. Sometimes, the U.P. can also feel pretty empty, but Xavier prefers it that way, I think."

He paused. "Did you know that people get paid to live in Alaska?"

Qrlil studied the room through half-shut eyelids, trying to avoid the too-bright light. After a few moments, she decided it wasn't worth the effort, and sniffed around instead. Noticing that everyone she knew was here, she thought for a few moments more, then shambled over to the table Avea and Vincent were at.

"Good morning," she said tiredly, sitting down.

[Dining]

"Not precisely," Alex said. He flashed a grin. "Actually, I'm afraid I can't really go into the details." He gave a broad wink. "You know the sort of thing. Well, maybe you don't, actually..."

He took a sip of milk. "Anyway. So what have you been doing here, at this multiversal melting pot?"

We really need to start moving people out. Also, if I understand correctly, Qrlil is also at the same table as Julia and Null - I just didn't mention it.

He turned to Frank and Malo. "Frank, Malo, this is Qrlil. Say hi, everybody."

"No, I know," said Xavier, shaking his head. He paused and blinked. "That sounded weird. Anyway, I get what you're saying." He mimed pulling a zipper across his mouth. "I'm still curious, I just won't be able to ask and get an answer."

He leaned back in his chair. "But me, personally? Oh, you know, this and that. Swimming, tennis, movies, talking." He paused, considering. You know, why not? "Love, too, but that's a bit of a special case."

Alex paused for a moment, then took another sip and told Xavier "No offense, but I don't think I want to know. Given my appearance and suavity, it may come as a surprise, but that isn't really the sort of thing I find... interesting."

He considered a minute what might be most interesting. "Say, is there anywhere around here it might be possible to compare our relative forms of magic? I mean as in practical demonstration - talking about one's local set of metaphysical laws tends to be intensely boring for the listener, and there's no substitute for the real thing anyway."

Julia began to bounce as she tapped her foot impatient. She turned to Avea and said, "yeah, we definitely need to do something. I mean, I love my dad, and your mom's cool, but..."

Frank said, "you need to get out and live a little."

Julia said, "yeah. I was about to say I needed to leave before my dad starts finishing my sentences as well, but... too late for that." She grinned at him, mischievously but fondly.

Avea nodded her agreement and said, "yeah. I'll throw on a swimsuit. Meet you at the beach?"

Julia shrugged. "Sure."

"You obviously haven't met Vincent," said Xavier. "My twin brother over there. If you started monotonously droning on about your laws of magic, he'd start taking notes and asking questions. He's that kind of guy.

"And I'm no scientist or anything, but I wouldn't mind comparing different types of magic. I'll go first." He held out a hand and muttered, "Vanar." A small flame blossomed in his hand. This is sure useful for demonstrating magic, ain't it?

"This is small," said Xavier, holding the fire up. "Simple, doesn't require too much training, doesn't take a lot of power, blah blah blah."

[Dining]

"Do you often finish other people's sentences?" Vincent asked Frank. "I mean, there's nothing wrong with that — Xavier and I do it on occasion with each other — I'm just curious. Or can you only do it with your daughter, because you've lived with her for a long time?" He paused, tapping his chin. "Hmm."

Malo shook her head and said "no, no, not at all. He mostly just does it with his son and daughter. Doing it with other people would get..."

Frank finished, "very annoying," and flashed Malo a gently mocking grin.

She smirked back at him and said in a stage whisper, "you're welcome for setting that one up for you, by the way."

Frank looked over at the newcomer, Qrlil. He said, simply, "huh. You in the intergalactic beef industry?"

Malo looked from Qrlil — with confusion and slight fear — and Frank — with only absolute confusion.

Julia seemed as puzzled as her father, but said, "Qrlil, the red-head, Frank, is my dad, and Malo there is Avea's mother."

Frank offered a hand. "Pleasure to meet you, Qrlil," he said. "And, uh, sorry I couldn't resist the beef joke."

Qrlil blinked, still a bit sleep, and held up her hand stiffly - it still wasn't an entirely natural gesture, it seemed. "I am pleased to meet you as well," she said, shaking hands. "And I do not eat meat. Or abduct livestock."

She turned her head to Malo, who seemed a bit more nervous, and said "Hello."

[Dining]

Alex gave the fire a cursory inspection. Didn't seem too different, comparatively, at least from what he had picked up. He concentrated, snapped his fingers, and conjured up a similar (if slightly larger) tongue of flame just above the surface of the table.

...This doesn't seem as interesting as I expected.

Frank shook his head. "You're one of these 'not-a-morning person' types, aren't you? Feels like a wasted day to me if I don't see the sunrise, but your loss."

He looked out the window. "Huh. I was tired when I came in here. It was evening. Not now. Actually feels like morning again." He shrugged. "Biological clock or crazy hoodoo, who knows."

[Rooms —> Dining —> Beach]

Malo was about to comment, until Avea came down the stairs in her swimsuit. A two-piece outfit in purple, designed to accent curves Avea did not yet have. Malo's hand flew to her face, and she said, "oh, xau. Dear daughter, have you been spending too much time with your aunt?" Then Malo turned to Julia and said, "in the name of our ancestors, tell me she hasn't been running around like this constantly!"

Avea said to her mother, "if I were Asayu, I'd be naked and making excuses about how our homeland doesn't have swimsuits. Which we don't."

"In our homeland," Malo replied, "we separate our bathing areas for men and women. Except Asayu's cult, but those springs get..." she grimaced, "unhygienic."

"I did not need to know that," Frank muttered.

Then Avea said, "hey, I'm going out to the beach, get some quiet time in. Though you're free to join me whenever." She smiled at Null as she left, confirming Julia's suspicions about her choice of outfit.

Avea made her way out and, seeing Havlak, sat cross-legged in the sand beside him, saying nothing but watching the ocean and horizon as he did.

"I am... not a morning person, yes," Qrlil said. She did not focus much on the ensuing exchange between Avea and her mother, instead ordering a bowl of fruit and some water.

Eventually, after a few moments of eating, she began to 'perk' up a bit. Blinking her eyelids fully open, she glanced around the room. Spotting Xavier talking (and apparently starting fires...?) with an unfamilar human, she gave him a smile, then turned back to Frank and Malo.

"So, er, I am pleased to meet you." Said that already. "I have gotten to know your daughters somewhat, and they seem pleasant people, which I suppose is to your credit. How exactly did you arrive here?"

[Beach]

Havlak, having eventually stopped chanting, had been gazing at the sun and communing (though not communing) quietly for an indefinite amount of time when he detected the smell of human. He turned his head slightly and spotted the purple-haired girl he had seen yesterday.

"...Yes?" he asked.

[Dining —> beach]

He's unimpressed. Shoulda seen that coming.

"Okay," said Xavier, rubbing his hands together. "This is more complicated than I usually do, so it might not be that fluid, but... come on." He took Alex outside to the beach.

Xavier put a hand on the sand and began muttering. Slowly, some grains began to gather up and stick together. The effort was immediately draining on him, but Xavier pushed harder. I'm stubborn, dammit, and I'm going to do this.

After about ten seconds, the grains merged together and coalesced into a small wolf made completely out of stone. Xavier's fingers twitching like they were controlling marionette strings, the wolf looked up at Alex, cocked its head, and blinked.

Xavier let out a gasp and collapsed to the ground. The wolf immediately froze in place, like a statue. "I'm... I'm fine," he said, breathing heavily. "But moving that... that's hard for me. Takes a lot of power, doing a bunch of things at once... It took a lot out of me." He pushed himself to his feet. "But don't worry, I'm fine."

[Dining]

In response to Frank's comment about his stamina, Vincent opened his mouth, closed it, opened it again, closed it again, thought a little, and repeated the whole process over again. "Hmm..." he said to himself. "You know, we never really thought about what would happen with tiredness and all that. Guess we never noticed it. Well, we wouldn't, since we came here midday, a... what, a week or so ago? Dang, can't believe it's that long already. Well, yay time dilation keeping it the same time back home."

Avea turned to Havlak. "You're the raptor who doesn't eat people. Havlak, right?" She looked back out to the ocean, and said, "I'm just enjoying the beach for now. I'm sure I'll join my friend Julia on a wild adventure later, but for now..." she sat. "Xau, it's nice to have a moment to just meditate."

[Dining]

Frank considered a moment, then shrugged and said, "easy. Well, sorta. Our daughters came here through a door in Minneapolis that should've led to a resteraunt. Didn't. We got worried, followed 'em here." He paused, and then, a look of sudden inspiration came to his eyes. "They were gone about an hour our side. How long have they been here?"

Qrlil made a small irritated noise as Xavier left without showing any sign of noticing her. "Er, several days, at least," she said to Frank. "They have been here for about as long as I have, if I remember correctly."

I wonder what that means for me?

[Beach]

Alex raised an eyebrow; it was something he'd taken specific steps to make possible. "Interesting," he said. "That took a lot out of you?"

[Beach]

Havlak nodded and closed his eyes again. After a moment, though, he became unable to suppress his curiosity any longer. He opened his eyes and turned his head to face the girl.

"Why," he said, "did you have any concerns that I would eat you?"

Avea picked at the sand nervously and said, "uh... sorry, you just sort of resemble, some, er, animals from the eastern jungles of my homeland. Except they're... well, just animals. And they eat pretty much everything." She drew circles in the sand and added, "no offense meant. It's just... talking to somebody who is clearly intelligent, but wears the face of a beast... it's a bit disconcerting, is all."

She cleared her throat. "So. Er. Anything else you need to ask? Might as well do it now before it gets busy here."

[Rooms —> Beach]

Julia, who had slipped away before Frank had asked how long she and Avea had been there, came out to the beach in the same modest swimsuit as before, and took a seat by Avea. "Nice weather," she said. "Let's see if anyone else shows up or starts doing something fun."

Yeah, I just forgot to mention that. Oops.

[Dining]

Frank nodded, and Malo groaned. She said, "xau, I hope they didn't..."

Frank put a hand on Malo's shoulder and said, "your daughter's a good girl, and besides, I think they agreed to... well, just stay friends." Malo opened her mouth, and Frank added, "and ignore Asayu's suggestion on what sort of friendship." He shook his head. "Malo, you worry too much."

Malo shrugged, then turned to face Qrlil and Vincent. She then said, "I won't pretend I understand what's going on, but sounds like we don't have to hurry. I'll take it. I could use some relaxation." She grinned and added, "And some real food. Earthborn can't make a salad to save your lives, but I'm guessing the people here are used to odd requests?"
