Yet more impressions:

  • Acchi Kocchi: Urgh, as cute as a kitten wearing winter clothing patting the head of its adorable little sister. Has some funny moments too, but mostly it's cute. Did I mention it's cute?
  • Medaka Box: Very good adaptation of one of my fave JUMP mangas, but only time will tell how they'll handle the stuff later on...
  • Accel World: Whoa. Those production values. Plus it's tech-happy, video-game-y, and it has lots of potential, so what's not to like?

So, impressions thus far.

  • Space Brothers - Definitely my frontrunner for this season, if only because it's doing the "sympathetic everyman" thing a lot better than usual.
  • New Lupin the III - The art and animation are almost perfect, and the sense of freewheeling fun running through the whole thing was great, but if "Lupin and Fujiko battle-flirting" is the extent of the interaction between them, I'll probably drop it.
  • Mysterious Girlfriend X - It's the most interesting/appealing romance anime I've seen in a good while. Will probably watch till the end, barring a huge drop in quality.
  • Sankarea - Not much to talk about here. Main character is fairly likeable, great production values for a DEEN production, will probably continue watching just to see where they're going with the "Turning a girl into a zombie" thing.
  • Upotte! - The "anthropomorphic loli guns" gimmick makes the slapstick humor more interesting, I'll admit but this doesn't have much else going for it.
  • Accel World - The sole notable thing about this is the MC being slightly shorter and thicker than the usual loser protagonist. Won't drop it now, but probably will soon.
  • Kuroko No Basuke - You know, I thought this was going to be good, but then I got to the "THIS IS... THE SECRET TECHNIQUE OF THE RUMORED/LEGENDARY-" No.

You mean shorter, right?

...I was avoiding Sankarea and Mysterious Girlfriend X because of how weird they are (wait... that SCARED ME AWAY instead of making me jump at it!?). Maybe I'll look into them after all, since people seem to like them.

Also, to the people who are iffy on Accel World... if the manga and light novels are any indication, I suggest you wait for 5 or so episodes to pass, so you have a good grip on where exactly the story intends to go. I had to explain the same thing to people who were badmouthing Listen To Me Girls I Am Your Father last season, but at least I'm not alone in saying it this time.

MGX is a series that when you get past the initial revulsion you'll find it pretty endearing.

I see what you mean, 'cause I just watched the first episode and it's exactly as I expected. .-.

Re: Accel World It's not really notable now, but it's unfolded in typical shonen action fashion, and I love shonen action to bits. Plus from what I can surmise Accel World won't just be typical shonen action.

As for the main character, uh, yeah, he did push my berserk button when he shoved that basket of sandwiches, and he's a pathetic, selfish loser, true, but at least He looks like he'll have more consistent characterization than Shuu.

[up]He's actually Shu's prototype, given He came before Shu.

He'll grow out of his loser status anyway after he clears all his problems up.

I really don't get what's good with Space Brothers though. It's so ordinary and boring IMO. I gave episode two a chance and it fails me. THERE'S NOTHING in there. D:

[up] Loser leads are nothing new, man. I'm used to them. Just saying that as far as loser leads go, Haruyuki (is that his name?) is on the better part of the scale.

Re: Uchuu Kyodai I dunno, the characters are likeable, the directing is excellent, and there's a clear goal to work towards to. I like it precisely because it's ordinary, or rather, a well-spun tale about an ordinary man with ordinary problems.

This show is definitely not for everyone, so if you don't think it's your cup of tea, move along.

[up]Yeah, I guess... But it's ordinary-ness is so disturbing. Like I'm watching a guy watching a rock. I'd wish they aimed at Mars instead of just the moon or space.

[up] The manga St&rs does exactly that, and I can honestly say it's not as enjoyable as Uchuu Kyodai. It even has "superpowers" and stuff, but somehow it isn't as interesting.

[up]So in short anything inside our solar system is boring....

That's it. Enough. Anything in space should only be space opera, like Bodacious Space Pirates.

If you want to reference a space opera, Titania is a better option.

Opening music (can't find the opening itself sad)

Legend of the Galactic Heroes is... well, not one of my favorites, but one of the things I like recommending to people. So yes I'm recommending it. It's awesome.

So, Jormungand. It feels like it's not sure what it wants to be. The action scenes aren't quite realistic, but they're not over-the-top either. It's mostly serious but there's a number of (not especially funny) jokes. The actual events of the episode are dark and amoral, but the characters are presented as likable people

I think I've settled on watching Fate Zero, Mysterious Girlfriend X, Accel World and Sword Art Online depending on how it turns out.

I'll give Medaka Box a little longer though that may be a wasted effort if I don't feel like sticking it out until it gets good.

I appreciate Uchuu Kyoudai for what it is, but I don't think I could sit through the whole thing.

If anything that I'm not watching does turn out to be actually really impressive I can always go back and watch it, sp I may watch other peoples' reactions to see how they go.

[up] Those are some pretty good picks anyway.

I honestly suggest reading Medaka Box instead of watching it, because it's faster that way, but eh, your choice. I know I can wade through the anime because I know that I'll like the parts later on.

Yet more impressions~

  • Kimi to Boku: Same deal as its first season. So okay it's average.
  • Fate Zero: Also same deal as last season. Okay, maybe it's more awesome this time around.
  • Nyarlko: Well, the only Lovecraft in it are just shallow references to the Cthulhu mythos. Heck the show itself admits that. I should be rolling my eyes, but dammit, it's. So. Cheerful. It sure as hell doesn't take itself seriously. Basically, it has a woefully underused (one might even say it's practically unused) premise, but it's a fun romp anyway.
  • Dusk Maiden of Amnesia: Interesting execution of the first episode, but not exactly a good or entertaining execution. Still, I got interested enough to continue watching, and both production values and writing are solid.
