'Anti-charisma' may be the best phrase I've come across all year.
Way late to the party, I know, but for what it's worth: As someone who finished university in December 2013 and, a year and a half later, still hasn't found a job in line with my degree (resource mgmt/planning), I can say that, yes, I have been passed over in favour of people who haven't been unemployed for as long - whether they graduated later than I did, or did postgrad, or have experience... >.< And of course I get passed over for the petrol station jobs or the retail jobs because I have a degree. -_-
Actual conversation from a phone interview:
Potential employer: "I see you graduated over a year ago... why haven't you been employed in the RM field yet, do you know?"
Me: "Er... because there aren't enough graduate jobs out there... and employers always go for the people with experience."
Potential employer: "Hmm."
Another actual conversation:
Potential employer: "Well, I see you've applied for our petrol station opening... you're a bit overqualified..."
Me: "Any job is a good job. I'm not having much luck in the RM field - they all want experience."
Potential employer: "Hmm."
Yeah, I didn't get either of those jobs.
