The second class of S-II's isn't something they crapped out to explain Nicole, it was brought up as early as The Fall of Reach novel (published before Combat Evolved was released!). When the S-II's officially graduate Chief Mendez leaves to start training them (probably retconned to the S-III's but whatever), Halsey talks about it. My guess is they put it in there to explain any future discrepancies with Spartan-II numbers.

And we are not going to play as a member of Gamma Team, they haven't even starting growing hair in their private places yet. My money? Lucy. One of only two survivors of Beta's Suicide Mission, and a Heroic Mime to boot.

Well considering who I'd probably play as, most of my team kills would probably be self-defence.
