"Wait, what? You mean like some kind of insect-thing that forces its host to do whatever is needed to advance the position of the parasite? I've once seen a wormlike thing forcing its grasshopper host to drown itself so that the worm can multiply, but I thought that bigger animals would be immune to that kind of thing." I shivered at the thought of something like that happening to anything sapient. To be locked inside your own body, unable to even blink on your own. That would be true hell... "Also, don't talk like that. You're going to make it, you hear me?"

"I'm going back to the mall" I said "See if I can find any medical supplies"

For the first time ever I actually wished my mum were here. As a nurse, and an intensive care one at that, she had skills that would be invaluable in this situation, I pulled out my mobile.

Crap! Out of batteries. Maybe there's a payphone somewhere

I wouldn't need to tell her it was an alien, I'd just say we found someone wounded in a car crash, I could sort the rest out when she arrived.

I turned to run back to the mall when the alien spoke again.

<Wait.>

I stopped.

He turned to look at Ryan and I.

<I appreciate your concern, but you will not have time to heal me before he finds us.>

"Before who finds us?" I asked

<Visser Three.>

Visser Three. A name I would learn to hate. Of course, back then I had no idea who it was supposed to mean. "Visser Three? What are you talking about? Is that one of those Yeerk things? And what is this "mission" you mentioned?". Honestly, I didn't know why I wasn't scared back then. It's one of those weird things i have; whenever someone or something needs my help, I tend to forget about myself.

"Car!" I said suddenly.

Everyone looked at me.

"If someone is hunting for this man." I began to explain "then we need to get him, and us, away from the crash site. Even collectively, we will not have the strength to carry him to a safe distance at an acceptable speed. And that mean's we're going to need transport."

"We don't have time," I said, speaking up. I'd been shocked enough to stop speaking, but I'd just shaken that off when I spoke up. "If he says he'll die, then he probably will. It's not nice, and it's not idealistic, but it's true. He needs to tell us something, and we need to listen."

I nodded, fine with my point. I still didn't get how he was projecting his thoughts into my head. I still didn't know why he had four eyes. I still didn't know what a Yeerk was, or how they worked. (Though Ryan's theory was quite apt...) This all bothered me. And, like it or not, optimism isn't my thing. He was likely to die, and it's a sad thing, but that doesn't make it any less true.

"Hey Curly." I said to Jamie. "Pop quiz. What is the andalite doing right now?"

I cut of Jamie before he could answer.

"He is breathing. Which means that he is?.... Come on now Curly, even you should possess the limited amount of brain cells required to answer this. If someone is breathing they are not-?"

"-a person with less intelligence than you," I interrupted, "But we have no time to argue." I knelt down beside the alien, mostly an effort to make him feel more comfortable by talking at eye level. "Please, go on," I said, as if dismissing Alex's stupid ideas. Mostly because I was.

<Thank you. We have fought this war for a long time, but unfortunately, due to the nature of the war, we cannot merely contact your government to help fight the threat. There is no way to tell who is a controller and who is not. It is highly probable that your own families have been infiltrated, but I know by your reactions that you are not being controlled. I will die today, there is no stopping that. However, Visser Three does not know about you.>

Now that put a damper on my plan, even if I were able to get Elfangor to safety, it would be very likely that the first person who we asked for help, would turn out to be an enemy.

"Go on." I said

Sorry for the length - most of it's just summing up what's happened and what was going on in Liz's head and working on Nano's bringing in word count boosters

Smoke poured from the inside of the ship and something stepped out. I found myself looking back and forth between the deer-like legs (I'd seen more than enough deer and horses to be able to see the difference in movement) and the humanesque face. I was barely able to keep from staring with my mouth open.

And then I saw the tail. It was curved like a scorpion's and covered in the same blue fur as the rest of the body. All my trains of thought were focused on comprehension and figuring out what to say.

<Am I a what?> I heard a voice in my head. Not a great sign, but at least I didn't seem to be the only one who heard it. I did miss the preceeding question and only later figured out what the correct answer was.

The alien was injured, obviously unable to stand but seemed to be forcing himself to focus on telling us something. Ryan seemed to be trying to help it and I moved forward to stand by, just far enough back that if it was able to stand, it could. Instead, I focused more on what it was trying to say.

Despite hearing the alien threat, Ryan managed to get my attention with a similar Earth-based creature. At least, as far as I know it's from Earth.

Alex had the idea I should have when we first saw the ship, though. Seeing that he found his phone of no use, I regretting having assumed that we were close enough not to worry about my cell phone. Instead I was trying to figure out where would have something helpful. The best I could come up with was our clothes, and at best that would delay.

Alex had another idea, but his shout for a car made me look around, slightly confused before looking at him. Playing in the streets tended to make a shout of car a warning rather than a request and even the absurdity of the situation couldn't break that.

Then Alex and Jamie began a quick argument. After they got a few snipes off at each other, my brain caught up with the situation.

"Wait, you suggested that this... Visser Three? is going to be coming soon? So what do you want us to do before we make sure to keep him in the dark about us?" While I trusted this alien, I doubted that the aliens would be that obvious. But I refused to point that out right now.

"Wait" I said "Before anyone say's anything else..."

I placed my hand on Ryan's shoulder, and gave him a friendly reassuring smile

"When this has all blown over." I said. "I am going to murder you."

Seriously. Even today part of me feels that this entire Yeerk fiasco is his fault. For some reason though Despite everything that's happened, I'm actually glad we found that ship. But then again, being in a situation where for once in your life, you're not a worthless retard, is something that anyone would be grateful for.

I had no idea what was wrong with this guy. First he randomly proclaimed that he hates me, then he practically aimed a death threat on me, then he started to shout at a dying... man? Woman? It's hard to tell genders on aliens. That is, of course, taken they even have genders, let alone a specific male/female split. I'm pretty sure not all aliens are like that. I mean, what are the odds that a non-earth being also has it's gender decided by X/Y chromosomes, let alone all of them? But I'm ranting again, let me get back on topic.

I turned towards Alex. "Would you please shut up for a moment and let the guy finish his explanation instead of going crazy on all of us? If you really want to help, let him say how you can help." Then I looked back at the alien. "So, what do you have in plan for all of us?"

I nodded at Ryan's suggestion. I was just about to say the same thing; this guy was clearly running out of time, and every second counted.

"Ignore him," I said bluntly, gesturing to our crazy friend. This was a crazy situation, sure, and a someone not going insane might actually make less sense than everyone staying sane, but... Seroiusly? Death threats at people you barely know? Suggesting an extraterrestrial is a pinata? I had a lot of question I wanted to ask, but as I said before, there was no time,

<I want you to continue the fight against the yeerks. They will be unaware of you, of who you are and most importantly, that you are not Andalites. You will be able to strike from the shadows and retreat without the yeerks being able to find you.>

Elfangor pulled out a cube. It was blue, and glowing slightly.

<This is the technology we have used to fight the yeerks. It is called a morph cube. It allows you to "register" the Deoxyribonucleicacid of animals, thus allowing you to morph into them.>

So, in essence we're going to be a guerilla no pun intended group?, I thought. What can we possibly use to stop the advancement of an entire empire?. That's when the alien pulled out some kind of blue cube. The morphing cube... "Deoxy... you mean DNA? "Register" the D Na of animals, then morph into them...", I repeated. That is our one weapon. That cube allows us to absorb the DNA of any creature, after which we can transform into that animal.

...You propably stopped reaing by now, thinking this is the ranting of some insane lunatic. The anwer is no. Though I do rant a lot, I am not insane just yet. Of course, at that moment I thought the situation was insane, but that's a different story. Actually, it was the original story, so let's get back to that.

"So, if I get this straight, you're saying that this box allows us to transform into any animal we get the DNA from? That sounds... both awesome and really creepy. I'm figuring the process is reversable though, otherwise it would never be used in actual combat, but..."

"Wait," I interrupted Ryan's thoughts, "Just animals? Does it work on sapient species?" I asked. I tried to keep the questions to the minimum, but this was important information. If there were these Andalites and Yeerks about, then logic permits the existence of many other species of aliens...

I had bristled at the others comments, I HATED being treated like an idiot!

.....

But the fact was that they were justified, I was acting like an idiot. So I shut up and let the alien talk.

But when the alien got to a part about an ethical dilemma, well....

I'm still a curious person, always have been, always will be.

"Why?" I asked.

Sorry if I remember this wrong.

<When you morph into an animal, you have to fight against it's instincts. When you morph into a sentient being... you are effectively inside their head. They have lost all privacy to you. On a less ethical level, it is possible that you could fail to control their thoughts and instincts and could become another them. In war, of course, tactical decisions take precedence over privacy. However, to see into another being's head... can be a terrible thing.>

Wait. I thought. How does that work? How can the transfer of DNA copy across someones mind?

I was about to ask Elfangor, exactly that.

But then I remembered that I had wasted everyones time enough as it was.

Still, this could be important information, and not asking it, simply because I was afraid of what everyone else would think, like some pathetic four year old, could also turn out to be a mistake.

Then again, Jamie made a point, we were running short on time so-

In the end I spent to much time contemplating the question, and someone spoke before I could say anything.

I nodded, the international symbol for agreement. Thought it's propably not an intergalactical symbol. "Very well. We'll, or at least I will, accept your mission. So uhm... how does this thing work exactly?"

...I had no idea what I got myself into by agreeing. Even so, if I were given the choice again, I would give the same answer.
