So apparently Disney/ABC is doing their own riff on Fables. I say Disney because they're actually using the animated film names for some of these characters and apparently we're getting a conflict between Maleficent and the Evil Queen in this

I am half hoping for some sort of giant Disney crossover film.

Is it me or do studios besides Disney seem to be getting on the Fairy Tale wagon these days, like it's what's "in"?

Wait this is actually based on the comic Fables?!

Saw the Snow White/Prince Charming origin episode. Dang, Snow White is pretty badass, huh?

Damn Henry for getting Emma a shirt! I liked Emma going around in an undershirt!

If I had a nickel for every film where Emma Stone falls off a balcony... I'd only have two nickels, but weird that there's two of them.

[up][up]I think it's probably better to keep the show discussion separate. That thread could just get confusing. Plus, the two shows have turned out to be surprisingly different.

I enjoyed it, but it was sure heavy handed. Drink! every time someone mentioned true love. Not just alludes to it, specifically mentions it. If you're Drink!ing every time someone alludes to it, you'll be perfectly paralytic. Still, I enjoy both sides of the couple (Ginnifer Goodwin is unsurprisingly good), even if they occasionally look younger than their daughter. Which makes sense, but weirds me out.

Hmm. So I'm thinking that the Huntsman is the sherrif, but I can't tell who Dr Whale (David Anders) is meant to be. Someone from Pinnochio?

And I've missed you Anastasia Griffiths. Shame you can't use your real accent in the flashbacks.

Btw, in the second episode, there is a brief scene where you can see a slutty real-world Red Riding Hood. Is it me, or is she flirting with someone who looks like the real world big bad wolf?

Just watched episode 03..

I would need to go double check the other episodes.. But I think we have a Couch Gag.. the title with the forest, whatever is lurking in the woods seems to change. It's not entirely clear, but this one seems to be either Bandit!Snow or a Troll.

I know they're playing with Maybe Magic, Maybe Mundane, but damn I hope they don't go with mundane, or try to stretch it for the whole series. I'm hoping for some outright magic elements showing up sooner or later in Story Brooke.

Almost certain that the sheriff is a/the Big Bad Wolf. The beard was my first clue. His statements and skills in this episode seem to hint more at that. I'll be damned if he wasn't tracking by scent there... He could also be a The Huntsman, but my preference is for the former. (Maybe both? :D )

Regina seems to be putting villain characters in positions of power, (or at least that was the supposition back in ep02 for that big group on the first try) but I think there are enough shades of grey on certain characters, even villains, that some of them might be Becoming the Mask for having been there so long. A sheriff is supposed to be upright, following moral guidelines. He's clearly under her sway, but his actions in this episode don't exactly lockstep with the Mayor's plans, especially regarding Henry.

Hence my guessing that he's the huntsman. In the Disney version — which the the primary set of tales that this version's drawing from — he's token good guy for evil team of the Queen and the Mirror.

[up] You can't say this series doesn't have fanservice. Also liked Emma taking her undershirt off, and briefly standing around in her bra. Also, some Foot Focus.

As for the episode itself.... an interesting way of taking Rumpelstilskin and Cinderella and cramming them together.

I think Meghan Ory (sp?) is weirdly cast. She'd fit better as a bubbly fairy, or, (on the opposite end) one of Cinderella's evil stepsisters. She's got the evil eyebrows for it. They work in the same place. It's more cohesive that way.

I just started watching the show this episode, and it seems fun. The fairy-tale/real world paralleling reminds of of when I used to watch Wishbone as a kid.

[up]Oh, I dunno.. It might be a pretty good test. If the man can keep their eyes off Ruby for the whole date(save for ordering, perhaps), then he may be a keeper....

And, I've always had a problem with Rumpelstiltskin being portrayed as a villain... The guy only wants to have his contracts honored... Though the whole "for a favor"/"[insert bad thing]" the show puts up does make him far worse than the fairy tales I've heard, in which his price was spelled out from the beginning... Although, that's probably how they've demonstrated some people are more Genre Savvy than the next... I mean the Queen/Regina did make Rumpelstiltskin spell out his deal, and didn't accept the whole "for a favor" bullshit...

Regina's barely genre savvy. She basically volunteered herself as a slave.

I think there could be a lot of mileage to be made out of a version of Rumplestilzkin that made hard but fair bargains and was killed for his trouble. I don't think this version is about to work that way.

Robert Carlyle is, of course, killing the part.

Rumple has an impressive array of outfits. Three in one episode alone. This is unprecedented for network tv. What a dandy!
