I've never really had a problem with subject matter in these sorts of films. (so chinatown woudn't bug me, I don't think)
No, what gets me going are the directors who get away with treating their cast and crew like shit

Sorry, I didn't mean that Chinatown has a paticularly disturbing subject matter, because it doesn't. I was trying to say that although it's generally considered a great film, it's The Pianist and a couple of other films that have made people support Polanski.
I don't know if I'd ever blackmail or not watch a movie just because the director is guilty of some crime. Movies are made by a lot more people than just a director; it's their movie too. Now if the director's own warped ideas actually make it into the movie, it's another story, but if that's the case, the movie is bad anyway.

And as another sidenote, though this may just be an old wives' tale as the "official" version of the story was much different, Albert Broccoli was reportedly involved with the Mob and murdered someone in a bar fight.
