The sixth victim of the recent series of comas with no known cause was committed to Glenbrook Hospital yesterday evening. 46 year old Kate Jameson from Glenview, wife and mother of two fell asleep last night, and has not woken up since. She was discovered by her 10-year-old son, Jacob. 17-year-old daughter, Maria, a student at New Trier High School recalls the events of last afternoon.

"I got a call from home on my cell when I was in class, and after class was over, I went outside to check my voicemail. When I did, it was Jake crying into the phone saying 'Mary, Mary you have to come home, Mommy won't wake up.' That sort of thing, he was really upset.

I got home as soon as I could and rushed to Mom's room, and there she was asleep. I tried everything, cold water, shaking her, even pushed her off of her bed to see if falling would wake her up. But nothing worked so I called 911. When the ambulance came, they explained that she was fine, but she'd be asleep for a long time, and they didn't know how to wake her up.

I couldn't believe what I was hearing. How could she be fine? She won't wake up! My mom is asleep and these doctors can't wake her up!"

These comas started with 9-year-old Kenya White, from Northfield, when she was hospitalized last month on December 12th. Even though there are victims suffering from the same symptoms all over the North Shore Area, doctors have made no progress in determining the cause of these comas.

—Winnetka Talk

The date is May 16th 2012, and six months have passed since the first victim slipped into her coma. There are now just over 100 victims with the same symptoms in the entirety of the North Shore, heading as far south as the North Side of Chicago. Two months ago, patients started dying in their sleep. Some were those who had been there since the beginning, some were only recently admitted. Four weeks ago, something entirely new happened.

One patient woke up.

My name's Maya Takada, and I'm the one who made that happen. Five weeks ago, the best friend I've known my whole life fell into one of these comas. I'd all but lost hope, but then, I had a dream. I met a mysterious man calling himself Somnus. He knew what was happening, claiming that these people were trapped inside their dreams, and that he could give me the power to save them while I dreamt, by allowing me to enter their dreams.

I thought I was crazy at first, but when I tried it, I did find her, and by week's end. I saved her. The next night, I visited her through her dreams to tell her about my powers, and found out that since I saved her, she too had the power to walk into another's dream.

Together, we've saved three more, who themselves have joined us in our mission.

We never know how much time we have, but this is something only we can do, and if we save you, you can help.

Dare you walk into another's dream?

Okay, now that the talky bits are out of the way. Let me introduce you to how this will work.

When you sign up, you will be signing up your character as a victim that has to be saved. While we are saving your character, you get to GM their dreams. That's right every player is the GM for their own dreamworld, but there ARE ground rules for how we play.

  1. No god-modding. This is common sense. One-hit kills are not cool, and your character's prime personality has no power over the rest of their mind while imprisoned.
  2. No killing P Cs without the player's permission. This is NOT Pv P, this is a story RP. We are here to tell a story. This means no Total Party Kill, no Rocks Fall, Everyone Dies, and DEFINITELY no Team Killing.
  3. The Main GM (that's me) gets the final word. If I say you can't do something, you can't. I will avoid over-using this power, but for the enjoyment of the other players, moderation is necessary.

Those who helped me write the concept for this (Blixty Slycat, Parable, Daksidevoid, Hydrall and Daltar) get reserved spots, with all of them having been saved, except for Darkside, who is the first person we will be saving in this RP.

Remember, your entrance into this RP is dependent on your patience and willingness to cooperate with the GM and the other players. If you make it in, then the show is all yours.

  • Name: Maya Takada
  • Age: 19
  • Sex: Female
  • Physical Appearance: Average height, Japanese facial features, has a slim build, with black hair and brown eyes, her bangs are cut straight puts her hair up into a bun. In public she is most frequently wearing a dress or skirt of some kind, rarely wears trousers.
  • Mental Appearance: Her body is identical to her physical appearance, but her clothing is almost always a kimono. Tied into the obi of the kimono is a katana.
  • Prime Personality: Maya takes herself very seriously, rarely goofing around in any manner. She is completely disciplined to be a perfect and elegant woman at all times. In spite of this discipline, she is a kind person who will help whoever she can in any way she can manage. In the past, behind the facade of perfection and elegance, she hid a number of eccentricities, notably her fascination with wars and weaponry. Recently, she has decided to stop hiding these things, openly showing an interest in martial arts and blacksmithing.
  • Dreamworld: A windswept bamboo grove home to a massive Japanese-style mansion, and a solitary forge. Maya is the head Maid at mansion (The master seems to be perpetully absent), as well as the smith at the forge. The Mansion has many places where weaponry is hung, and many panels depicting scenes of battle.
  • Abilities: Producing weaponry, mostly blades of some kind, controlling wind, and instantly growing bamboo.
  • Story: Maya's family is a very traditional family that encourages an adherence to their culture and traditions. As the eldest daughter, Maya caught the brunt of this encouragement. While others might rebel against it, Maya enjoyed her strict upbringing, taking it as a challenge to be the best she could. However, some of the interests she picked up over time did not fit wit her ideal image, and she rejected them. When she was approached by Somnus, she had to accept the part of her that she previously denied to save her friend, and has since accepted all of her interests in their totality.

  • Name: Maribel Rustwise
  • Age: 18
  • Sex: Female
  • Physical Appearance: Blonde hair that is kept in a single braid, green eyes. Glasses. Extremely short for her age, wears brightly colored t-shirts and skirts.
  • Mental Appearance: Mostly the same, but as a somewhat chibified version of herself.
  • Prime Personality: Melodie was not in her coma long before being rescued, as such she retains the same cheerful disposition she's always had. Melodie plays many, many indie games and gets most of what she knows about dreams from them, she is a bit of a nerd in general. Melodie was not a natural dreamer before falling into her coma. As such,
  • Dreamworld: her dream world is very stunted, disorganized, and above all, random. While generally quite a cheerful place, Melodie's dreamworld is full of dead ends, meaningless occurrences, and does not have a consistent shape, frequently changing when no one is looking. Most of it has the appearance of being heavily pixelated, stemming from Melodie's love of games. The landscape is dominated by hues of soft yellows, deep purples, and sometimes greens. A Japanese-style village appears often, as do a deep forest, infinite network of yellow caves, and a large city, sometimes populated with surreal residents and sometimes not, the variable nature of the locations making them difficult to describe.
  • Abilities: Melodie has the variably-useful ability to make the unlikely happen at will. She can control when she uses this ability, but not what it does. The results are often but not always in her favor, so use carries some risk.
  • Story: Melodie is an extremely ordinary girl. She is a nerd, attends high school, and little else. Melodie's fears are typical for a girl her age, she has few friends and is afraid of being alone, but it is not an all-consuming fear.

Alright. Here goes nothing.

Name: Lisa Mcford
Age: 20
Sex: Female
Physical Appearance: A hair below average height, Lisa strikes an unassuming figure. Green eyes, shoulder-lenght brown hair in a simple ponytail or more or less hanging freely, her facial features are fairly sleek and narrow. She prefers clothing herself in earth tones, an observant watcher will note her neck is always covered. She's never seen without her iPad.
Mental Appearance: A tall figure, dressed in a purple hooded cloak, her face covered in a white mask, featureless save a pair of eyeholes, revealing a pair of green eyes. The only other identifiable feature of her appearance is her hands, slender and well-shaped.
Prime Personality: Shy and wary of new people almost to a fault, but she's still very determined to participate in social settings, despite her obvious handicap. (see Story) Occasionally anxious, especially around animals.
Dreamworld: A dimly lit series of corridors, populated by creatures identical to Lisa's mental self. At the end of each hallway, there's strange doorways made from three slabs of stone, seemingly leading into blackness, while in reality leading to another doorway seemingly at random. Closer inspection of the doorways will reveal that the measurements doesn't quite add up, further reflection on the topic of the doorway is not recommended
Abilities: Teleportation, illusions and other misdirection-related powers, like creating smoke and sounds.
Story: Rendered mute at a young age after an accident she refuses to speak about, Lisa found herself torn between the speaking friends she had, but could no longer comunicate well with, and a boatload of strangers who knew sign language. Granted, several of her friends and family tried to bridge the gap, but Lisa still considered it to be a problem. Moving away to study only made the situation weirder, though she at this point had bought herself a tablet computer with a rather good Text-To-Speech program. Before she could experiment too much with how awkward this'd be in practical use, though, she was claimed by the strange Coma plague, and into her dreamworld she went.

  • Name: Akira Otonashi
  • Age: 18 turning 19
  • Sex: Female
  • Physical Appearance: Dark brown hair cut just past the shoulders, with very dark eyes and slightly tanned skin. Her build is athletic, with her height being a little higher than usual and her form being definitely feminine. However she is more likely to be seen in jeans or short pants than a skirt, with tight shirts that sometimes reveal her belly button and an ever present dark red leather jacket. She's got two extra piercings on her left ear, one high on it and the other right besides the usual on her earlobe. Lots of metallic accessories on the girl, from rings and bracelets to necklaces and earrings... though they tend to be wolfs, skulls, crosses and anything she might consider cool at the moment than pretty jewelry. Definitely looks like a bad influence even though she lacks a natural thug face.
  • Mental Appearance: Her mental appearance isn't too departed from her physical one... except for the fact that her leather jacket becomes far more fancy, reaching almost to the ground and growing dark fur on the on the back of the collar. She also carries a naginata.
  • Prime Personality: Akira is a very emotive girl, currently swept in a wave of rebellion. Her greatest desire is now to be free and run wild from her own everyday life on her home. She dreams of buying a motorcycle though for the moments she does as she can with her beloved bicycle. As said before she is very emotive... she gets very angry, very sad, very happy as the occasion deems... like a storm she can barely control herself due to the strength of her emotions. As such she tends to be incredibly loyal and nice to her friends, highly petty and rejecting of the people she doesn't like and such.
  • Dreamworld: Her dream world is a never ending world, free of any and all obstacles. Mountains are scarce as are trees and any other kind of natural barrier. The sky is perpetually grey and stormy... though with enough light passing through the clouds as to not make the place dark at all. It's occasionally raining within Akira's world and there can always be heard lightning striking in the distance. Within it the only edifications available are traveler lodges of many kinds... the biggest of them being the station. A deserted train station with a massive parking lot upon which almost any form of transportation imaginable is housed. However, hidden deep within this world lies Akira's nightmare... a series of tight, constricting and dark tunnels with massive metal doors which might close at any time to leave one trapped forever in the darkness. There are more dark things lying within which Akira will not talk about... though at the core of her world lies her first broken dream, completely opposite of the one lying in the surface. What once was a cozy and familiar home, now broken abandoned and grey. A girl's guards and spear thrown and forgotten on the ground and on the middle, with the frame bent and the glass broken there is a picture of a cheerful girl in the clothes and armor of a practitioner of the naginata in a tournament... holding a price in her little arms with her smiling parents at each side of her.
  • Abilities: Akira's abilities mostly revolve around lightning and transportation. She can summon bolts of electricity and storms to some degree. Her main ability though lays in being able to summon means of transportation... being it a sports car, a bike, a biplane, a metro train or a tricycle. Anything meant to carry people from one way to another is within her realm to summon... Though she really seems to vary it up. She does have a few favorites but chances are that Akira will appear with a new vehicle every night. A minor ability of her freedom domain is the ability to open locks. She also gains great ability wielding a naginata.
  • Story: Akira Otonashi was born in a loving family... being a cheerful and bright girl if a little of a crybaby (When something made her sad did she bawl, ditto if something scared her). For most of her childhood she was an example girl, cheerful, champion of naginata, obedient and good... However, her life took a turn for the worse once her family went through some financial troubles and the differences between her parents flared up. Her father a loving and eccentric man, very much an emotive person like her though he was somewhat immature. Her mother was a more grounded and rigid person, with a desire for things to be in their place and a great deal of concern over appearances. While their differences let the two have a very intense and interesting romance and a good synergy in their early years of marriage, such goodwill did not last once they fell into a rough patch. The divorce was a nasty thing, both parents left bitter and angry at one another with Akira caught right in the middle at age twelve. Akira was left in custody of her mother, who while loving and caring was too set up in her own ways... She too also obsessed about how the family looked after the divorce. Akira then came to start resenting her mother which brought about her rebellion... She embraced the wildness of her father and grew to take on some untraditional tastes which her mother did not like at all. Her mother became more and more tight which only prompted Akira to dislike it even more... until the present when all she wants to do is to be free and go away. She abandoned her study of naginata as it was something her mother got her into as she thought it was a great art for a girl to learn. However, she still makes some use of her knowledge of how to use pole-arms in the few street fights she has gotten into.

Name: Shamos McFly.

Age: 31.

Sex: Male.

Physical appearance: A tall, fairly muscular, and looming figure, he has black hair with a crewcut, bronze Greek skin, and deep brown eyes. He is usually found wearing an oxford shirt, brown tweed jacket, khakis, and black suede shoes.

Mental Appearance: Appears fairly normally, but wearing all a trenchcoat so dirty it appears almost black, with holes and shreds all over it. He also looks generally disheveled and his hair is greasier.

Prime Personality: Like many private investigators, Shamos is pessimistic, blunt, grave, and uptight. It would seem to those that know him that all traces of mirth or lightheartedness has all but died from this wretched man, leaving only a dark husk of whiskey-soured bitterness. He is not very pleasant to talk to.

Dreamworld: An endless cityscape, perpetually bathed in starless night, only illuminated by dirty streetlamps and garish billboards. The buildings are dilapedated and usually devoid of people. The whole world seems washed in grime and darkness. There are a few inhabitants here and there, humanoid incarnations of modern vice, like Lust, Addiction, and Greed, plus a few stray orphans, homeless, etc. who only seem to exist for you to feel sorry for.

Abilities: None. His dream really is that crappy. From his real life job as a detective, though, he's become scarily good at reading people and judging intention.

Story: Shamos came from a destitute family, his father having been killed in a mob hit before he was born and his mother working fifteen hour shifts at a local factory. Throughout his childhood he was told of the amazing tales of the heroic Eiran McFly, his father, and his exploits in saving lives and putting away bad guys. Naturally, Shamos wanted to follow his father into this wonderous business.

Twenty years of police training and experience quickly shattered this naive outlook.

Recently, he learned about the real Eiran McFly, an alcoholic businessman who emotionally abused his wife and abandoned his only son. The stories his mother and uncle told him were merely fabrications to give the child a male role model to look up to, going so far as to make one up. This sent Shamos into a spiralling depression that landed him passed out in the gutter one late thursday night.

It took them two and a half days to figure out that he wasn't waking up...

  • Name: Roy Child
  • Age: 24
  • Sex: Male
  • Physical Appearance: A very typical looking man, somewhat on the tall side and with lankier features. Shaggy brown hair that wasn't kept well. Only wears loose T-shirts, most of which are reminiscent of 70s and 80s culture, as well as baggy/outdated jeans. Seems to have a hard time focusing, as if tired, but it's not really the case.
  • Mental Appearance: Tall and broad-shouldered, and skin darker than what he actually has. Brown hair is shorter, but much better conditioned and even flowing. A stubble of beard. A large stretch of stitches crosses his face, under his right eye and above his left. Wears a blood-red jacket that rests over his shoulders, trimmed with gold, and unbuttoned, revealing a bare chest covered only with a blue sash. Black, loose pants that are tucked into even blacker boots. A pirate.
  • Prime Personality: Fun loving and carefree. Can get boisterous once excited, and very somber when need be. Doesn't like to question things or generally think too hard about a situation, often letting his friends help him out. He makes more friends than he does enemies, since he prefers to avoid people he dislikes.
  • Dreamworld: Imagine a huge ship made of mighty wood. Huge - near-Titanic proportions. Just floating through the open waters. Now imagine a mountain had suddenly risen from the depths of the water and peaked right through that ship, cutting the vessel in half but otherwise leaving it mostly in tact, as if the mountain branched around it to keep the ship together. Now imagine someone built a steel fortress around what was left, including watch towers, cannons, dungeons, etc. Roy calls this "Romance Peak."
  • Abilities: A sword that can lengthen and extend as he wishes, to the point of becoming nothing but a handle. A multitude of pistols and magnums hidden under his "cape," which can fire an array of different ammunition.
  • Story: Lived most of his childhood distant from his parents, often "adventuring" through woods and other areas. Grew an interest in books, especially those of pirating. After nearly drowning in a lake, his parents were much more secure and made him focus on his studies. He was becoming a grade-A student, but dropped out of business school at 19 to pursue a better dream "at sea" with his girlfriend, who saw the idea as some childish fantasy.

... Kinda seems like I'm in for a wait. Still, too good of an idea to pass on.

  • Name: Cain Andores, he prefers Cai or Kai. Do not call him his real name.
  • Age: 16 in real life, 30 in his dreams.
  • Sex: male
  • Physical Appearance: A young man with dark, ruddy hair, he has dark blue eyes, and usually wears a pair of gray jeans, a tight fit medium short sleeved shirt, a cloth blue wrist band on his left arm, and a rather muscular frame, though he is not very bulky. He has a lot of scars, and generally always looks introspective.
  • Mental Appearance: In his dreams, he is a handsome, out going swordsman wearing grim, practical steel armor, a sword rests on his back which should be impossible for any man to lift (think Dragonslayer + Sword Beam abilities. You got it). When he smiles, its either a Slasher Smile or a very, very rare and very pleasant looking smile.
  • Prime Personality: Even in the real world, this young man has a violent psyche resulting from the idea of being the reject from the family, very well shown by his own name. His father, a businessman, showed his contempt for the boy even at birth by naming him Cain to contrast with his three other brothers. Despite being dark, a loner and someone who likes fighting the toughs and bullies a little too much, he is essentially using that to make sure that other people don't get hurt by associating with him, due to the wealth of enemies he has made. He does have interest in girls, and in privacy, he is even a bit of a nerd for JRPG games. If you get into his good graces, you'll find he is very oddly Adorkable when he gets to play his games.
  • Dreamworld: A rather grim, post apocalyptic place, this place is always stuck in daylight, well, except in certain areas called Dark Zones, where its not. Dark Zones are random, seemingly, but there are a lot of similar locales in this world to the real one. The "Monsters" related are called Shadows, manifestations of the literal Jungian Shadow concept. They are the type that will randomly Hannibal Lecture you. Each type of Shadow gets stronger and stronger the more negative emotion it absorbs. Given they currently exist in Cain's dreams...yeah, you get the picture. Worst thing about Shadows is that they are infectious. If some of one goes from dream world to dream world. Not even Cain knows where they came from.
  • Abilities: He is hellishly strong, to the extent that an enemy blocking his attack is a sign its really strong itself. He has a number of fire and electricity based magic spells, but most of these manifest as blasts off of his sword. He is deceptively fast. He can use most any weapon to a very high level of aptitude.
  • Story: How did a post-apocalyptic mess become Cain's dreamworld? He was born the son of a businessman, but not of his wife, but instead as the son of the businessman and a person he was having an affair with. He showed how much he cared for Cain alright, by naming him that, and then dumping him with his mistress, who was bipolar. Cain quickly found the only outlets for his frustrations over his daily life: video games and beating people up. Despite his violent nature, he never targetted the weak like The Bully might. As he put it, "You guys aren't challenging enough." He is a bit of a Tsundere towards these people, while he may voice dislike for them, he occasionally shows his Dere Dere smiles and helps them out. His love for video games is also for the motive of letting out his anger. Mostly so he doesn't hurt anyone precious to him.

You have gotten my interest, good sir.

A few questions before i sign up, though:

  • What's the preferred tone for characters and settings? I'm assuming nothing of Grimdark proportions, but what else does or does not apply?
  • In the dreams, the prime personalities are roaming around, as well as any repressed or hidden personalities?
  • What is within the realm of possibility in our individual dream worlds?
  • What are you generally expecting in a dream world?
  • What is a preferred length for being in the dream? Obviously not an incredible length, but are these meant to be short, medium length, a little long...
  • What is unacceptable for dream settings? Any particular concepts?
