Also, I was reading through the Death Note rules and noticed one that might help explain why the Shinigami King was so pissed about the situation:

Basically, Ryuk was breaking (or at least pushing) Da Rulez by letting Minoru run his auction without actually using the note.

So if Minoru had actually just killed someone, would he have survived his little plan?

Remember that the point of a Death Note is to kill people. It fits with the other rule that punishes Shinigami using it to save lives.

No. He was using it, just in a different way you could argue. Plus that is a rule on the Death God's part. If the Death Note is in the Human world for whatever reason the Death God has to make sure it's actually being used. The person does not actually have to be use it.

Kids, say no to Death Notes. If a shinigami offers you a Death Note, you say, “no, thank you.”

Eat the Death Note to gain its power is more appealing by the second.

@ M84: The smart thing to do is to expose the truth of the Death Note so society can work to stop them from ever being used and prevent it from killing more people. Or bury the Death Note deep in concrete so nobody can use it

The issue is the source of the problem isn’t even the Death Note, it’s Ryuk.

He’s the one constantly bringing it to the human world & there’s nothing that can actually stop him unless he somehow breaks a Shingami rule.

New rule: Giving away Death Notes for shit and giggles is forbidden under penalty of no more apples.

Can we just appreciate that a high school student with no special talents managed to think up and execute a plan so perfectly that Near, currently the greatest detective alive, has to admit defeat?

Really, the only reason he "lost" is because the Shinigami King said "fuck you bitch, I make the rules". Otherwise his plan was pretty much perfect.

The fact the King made the rules make me think he's genuinely evil and wants the Death Notes to only be used negatively

There are some standards, in that the Note can't target someone who is less than 780 days old or someone who is more than 124 years old.

But overall, the King wants the Notes and the Shinigami by extension to focus on bringing death. Hence why Shinigami die if they use their Notes deliberately to save human lives, though the same rule isn't in effect for human users.

Is that a rule, or just a natural way that Shinigami function? I thought it was a big deal that Rem was the only one who knew how to kill a Shinigami, and even then just because she happened to witness it.

Exactly. This is why I think the Shinigami King is either literally death or evil; because the only thing he wants his Shinigami and notepads to be used for is death. He does at least have standards like no writing down people under 780 days, but much like the Death in Final Destination he comes off as evil

Shinigami means "Death God".

They literally are death. So by their very nature as death they have to cause....... well death.

Yeah, the death note is not a tool of justice or to save life, is too kill, whatever role the shinigami have is irrelevant, it have to kill so it does.

It seems like the Shinigami King ultimately wants people to respect death. Which is probably why he didn't approve of a Death Note being sold off.

I wonder if that 124 Year rule is just a way to make Shinigami immune to the Death Note without making it obvious.

I didn't see a rule specifically forbidding it while checking the rules quickly.

So maybe that was the minimum age of any Shinigami when that rule was created?
