Huh, is this the first time the worst list (barring honourable mentions) that all the artists are male?

Well, it's a woman's world, and you're lucky to be living in it.

I think one glaring omission from the list was "I Don't Wanna Wait" by David Guetta and One Republic, basically "I'm Good" from last year but without the charisma and star power of Bebe Rexha. But it's Todd's list, and I get that he's more mad about the lazy interpolations of Country songs, on which front, I would say "Lonely Roads" is the worst offender. Anyway, can't wait for MGK to do like Drake Bell and 6ix9ine and pivot to the Latin market.

If Song vs. Song is anything to go by, Sabrina Carpenter's "Espresso" will probably rank pretty high on the Best of list. What I'm wondering is where Charli will land, especially since few of the songs from BRAT charted all that well. I'm personally rooting for "Guess featuring Billie Eilish" which I think also charted the highest of all the singles.

Maybe the top 10 this year will be all women? unlikely, with at least "Bar Song" and "Not Like Us" being almost certain shoe-ins

Hope "Obsessed" enters the best list. And wonder if "Hot to Go!" has a shot to again have a song in Buckley's worst to enter Todd's best?

For more details, A Dose of Buckley concerns an angry Canadian always uploading rants on Youtube, and since he worked in a radio company many were about music. Last year he put "bad idea right?" on his worst of 2024 list, while it was #1 on Todd's best, showing the huge contrast in reviewers - Buckley is cynical and thinks Olivia Rodrigo is just exploiting the same bad relationship over and over again, while Todd just loved to see a fun song with a Genre Throwback to music he likes.

As Todd once said (back when he still had just the Pop Song Reviews series), he doesn't do this because he hates pop music. He loves pop music.

Reading TV Tropes pages for various reactionary youtubers is always fascinating, because they, as most pages, are written by fans, and it always makes me think like "who the hell likes this guy this much?"

[ed.] oh wow, I'm impressed, I had to scroll two whole page lengths down his youtube channel to see the first explicitly transphobic thumbnail. Then again, he does post weekly, as these kinds of people are wont to do.

I think it broke through too late, but I wonder if "Pink Pony Club" might get an honorable mention on the best list, if only for the verrrrry nice guitar solos in it.

I hope so 🤞🏻 To my bewilderment, I had a dream last week that the Best List came out and Good Luck, Babe! wasn't on it. Not even as an honorable mention. Dream!me was so, so confused.

I'm not sure I know which ones definitely qualify for his list, but I'd understand basically any of Chappell's he picks from Midwestern Princess. Funnily enough Good Luck, Babe! was the hit but I like the rest of the album more - I don't think it's a bad single it's just not my favorite.

[up]I might be parsing your comment wrong but I'm almost positive that Good Luck, Babe is not on RAFOAMP, right?

It's a standalone single, yeah.

[up][up] Whoop, good catch. It overshadowed the album so much I keep getting them mixed up.

Speculation about the best list aside, do you think there's a chance Todd will do a Trainwreckords on Taylor Swift's Reputation?

It's kind of considered a trifecta alongside Witness and Man of the Woods and I think it'd be way more interesting than a second Trainwreckord on Katy Perry's latest album.

Funnily enough it's probably the most commercially successful of all those records by a long chalk, but it was probably because it followed 1989 (the delayed flop phenomenon) and people assumed Taylor was going to say something about the whole feud with Kanye and Kim (which was a fair assumption with what the lead single was and everything)

Yeah, if it A: Didn't flop and B: Didn't even serve as a slowdown to her career, it's pretty far from a Trainwreckord.

Gotta admit I hadn't realised that there were hard qualifiers for what were Trainwreckords. Does Todd apply the rule that it needs to be a flop or a career killer in a quantifiable way? It can't just be slightly underperforming or a bit baffling?

Larkmarn Since: Nov, 2010 Relationship Status: Hello, I love you

There aren't really hard and fast rules (I think Todd's tried to define it as "an album that derailed a career" and has had albums where the artists' careers either functionally were already finished before, as well as artists whose careers did limp on for several more albums after) but watering it down just to "an album that had criticism" dilutes the concept pretty severely.

If anything, Reputation seems to have propelled Taylor’s career rather than hinder it…

The_Reptile_ Since: Oct, 2010

Reputation’s entire thesis statement was to kill The Old Taylor to make way fir the New Taylor and regardless of its actual quality it succeeded on that front with aplomb.

#8371: Jan 23rd 2025 at 11:27:08 AM

Yeah, people thought Reputation might end up being one before folklore/evermore and the Taylor's Versions brought her back into the public's good graces and where she is right now, the unquestionably biggest pop star in the world. Thoughts of Reputation being a TW are way in the past at this point

Given the reception to Tortured Poet's Department, though, I fear we're going to have to get ready for the cycle to begin anew.

The best list is in the editing stage right now. Todd always gets his best lists out late, but still, feels later than usual, you know?

Re: Reputation as a Trainwreckord

This is why we need a "delayed at the station" or "Stuck on the tracks" (Not that knowledgeable about train terminology, help me out train nerds!) sub series for albums that were definitely flops and nearly killed careers, but they were able to learn from the mistakes and make succesful comebacks (ie, Eminem's Encore, Kiss Music from the Elder, etc). Technically he did one of those type ones with St. Anger.
