It's way past time this franchise changes leads.
I'm sure if you cast Tom Hiddleston as a suave rogue people will jump at it.
"All you Fascists bound to lose."
tom would be a villian, is heroic roles are not that good, he have that puppy dog eyes that make him a good tragic hero.

I think he become and artifact because they use him for the zanny humor and witty comentary rather that make him a chararter in is on right, I like the call this the sheldon efect: the chararter become so know for one thing they flanderized him afterward
They could've just continued the franchise with Barbossa as the lead or something.
Of course, if I'm gonna be honest, I have the odd feeling Barbossa is gonna be back for the next one. Maybe Jack has to go to World's End to save him or something. Keep in mind, Barbossa is still one of the Pirate Lords, he didn't appoint a successor, just like how Jack didn't do it when he died to the Kraken.
Have you any dreams you'd like to sell?![]()
Well, it's unclear if anyone can appoint a successor after Calypso was freed. The Brethren Court used to appoint successors by passing them their pieces of eight, which have since been burned in the ritual to free Calypso, so it's unclear how the Court decides membership now. It's possible that the Brethren Court just plain ceased to exist with Calypso's release but that'd be a very stupid idea (as there are other things to worry about other than Calypso).
The POTC wiki generally assumes if you do not appoint a successor, your successor is the first mate in your ship (thus Tai Huang became Sao Feng's successor as Pirate Lord of Singapore even though Sao didn't directly appoint him). So Jack's presumable successor is Gibbs and Barbossa's presumable successor is...one of those two british pirates who used to be navy officers.
You know what I'd be on board? Carina assuming her father's title as Pirate Lord. This franchise is oddly lacking in actual female pirates that want to be pirates. Elizabeth is just a pirate out of circumstance.
I think Barbossa works a lot better alone than Jack Sparrow does. Partially because he lacks the excessive zanyness, so he can have more normal character interactions with people. On Stranger Tides had several scenes of him just interacting with his naval officers and it was great ("Your head or a heading, I don't care which.").
"All you Fascists bound to lose."
I disagree, barbossa is pretty much the stright man to Jack sparrow zanyness, sure Jack have gone a little bit overboard but I dont see Barbosa carrying the movie on is on because for me he is jusg grand standing the entire time, see him with Jack is almost a buddy cop show done right.
> They could've just continued the franchise with Barbossa as the lead or something
As much as I like Barbossa's character,I think you can rule out ever having a film where he's not the main character,as far Disney is concerned most people are paying to depp's wacky antics as Jack sparrow.

I don't see how Barbossa is that much of a straight man to Jack. He's less zany, but he's still quite humorous and weird, though his humor is more verbal and less physical.
Geoffrey Rush probably does the best performance over the series as a whole and DEFINITELY in the latest one. There's a certain scene where he sells the absolute shit out of it with just his expression and some frankly clichéd and tired stuff works because it's Geoffrey Rush saying/doing it.
"These 'no-nonsense' solutions of yours just don't hold water in a complex world of jet-powered apes and time travel."I suppose a spin off film with Barbossa could work, but for the main films Jack will always have the role main character
Unless they try to kill Jack off permanently, then they will have a new main character,like..his long son/daughter!

I'll admit i've seen the first film more times then I care to remember,I still need to see this one when it comes out DVD
For some reason I've assumed he was the main character in this film,I blame the previous films.

have a listen and have a link to my discord serverHeck I'd argue that he isn't really the main character until the fourth movie.
This song needs more love. The problem is regardless of 'main character' status Jack's been overexposed and has barely evolved or changed at all (except for flanderisation which is hardly positive). Some characters can survive one-note status but very few and not when they're pushed as heavily as Jack Sparrow.
One of the things I did like about this film is that while Jack has essentially devolved into a slapstick clown, the other characters treat him as exactly that. Whether or not there is some sort of meta commentary on Depp's waning star power is debatable but it works for the film. Jack is pretty much entirely along for the ride and beyond Salazar's grudge doesn't actively affect the plot in any meaningful way.
"These 'no-nonsense' solutions of yours just don't hold water in a complex world of jet-powered apes and time travel."I think Jack is a fascinating character during the first three films of the franchise, mostly. The second exaggerates his cowardice a tad too much but it's functional. The problem is what made Jack interesting in the first and third, particularly the first, is the exact fact he oscillates between being very goofy and odd in one moment and surprisingly ruthless and machiavellian in the other, as well as his eternal Heel–Face Revolving Door. It made him a enigmatic character that always left you guessing on who's side he was and if all his bizarre speech patterns and silliness was real or just a façade to hide his ruthlesness.
Problem is, this trick of "leaving you guessing" doesn't work forever. It's a shtick that has an expiration date. With Jack its always "keeps you guessing, but in the end does the right thing", and that ultimately robbed the character's mystique after being done three consecutive times so he should have ended by the third.
By the fourth and fifth they kind of know they can't play this game anymore so he's a straight hero, which already shows how the character is lacking in mystique. The zanyness also slowly eats the seriousness and he basically loses any ability to be vaguely solemn by Dead Men Tell no Tales. The first movie had very dark moments for Sparrow (like the moment he kills Barbossa).
Barbossa, by virtue of not being such a goofball, managed to keep himself intact and still manages serious moments fairly easily.
Barbossa actually fills the niche Jack used to fill starting from the third. Much like Jack, he keeps switching sides and you're never quite clear what his game is. Our tvtropes page puts it best when it states that Barbossa is a Wild Card much like Jack is "But without the guarantee of doing the right thing at the end".

"All you Fascists bound to lose.""don't see how Barbossa is that much of a straight man to Jack. He's less zany, but he's still quite humorous and weird, though his humor is more verbal and less physical."
Barbossa act serious all the time while jack always feel he is bullshitting your way around, also he is a wild card but more honest about Being a bastard unlike jack.
Also like other said the movies never really explore him that much, offering vague things like is father in the third one or is quest for inmortality but a this point he have Been flanderized into the clown he is today
"My Name is Bolt, Bolt Crank and I dont care if you believe or not"Barbossa isn't serious all the time at all. In fact, he's extremely sardonic and has a sharp wit. Even in the first movie, when he's at his most serious, he often drops verbal barbs ("I'm disinclined to acquiesce to your request. (Beat). Means no." and "I'm curious, after killing me what exactly was your plan?"). It's just that his humor is far drier and more reliant on verbal exchanges than Jack's slapstick brand of comedy.
"All you Fascists bound to lose."
what I mean is that Barbosa always seen to have a objective in mind while Jack dosent give s shit most of the time, is a typical Buddy cop situation as Barbosa act like a movie pírate should while Jack just seen to be in the Job for shit and giggles.

He pretty much has become a bit of an artifact. I honestly would've been fine with the franchise using a totally different character as a lead.
