Temp bans don't really force their targets to properly re-evaluate their behaviour the way "manual" bans do. So, from a moderation standpoint, they're way less effective. Why bother programming them, then ?

For edit bans, if you get banned and are given a second chance, you either shape up, get re-banned with no third chance or get permabanned if you really screw up.

[up] Then that alone sounds like a good idea to me. A week should be long enough, really.

1) We already have and use the ability to temp ban.

2) Temp bans are not generally announced. Temp bans will not be generally announced in the future.

3) Temp bans run from a day or so to upwards of three weeks.

3) If you're talking about some sort of widget that auto-bans, that requires a set of hard-and-fast rules that must not be broken under any circumstance. Hammering out what those rules should be and how they should be worded would take far more time than we currently spend deciding whether to tamp-ban or not.

Forums bans can be and have been handed out on a temporary basis, but there is no widget to make it so. Rather, the mod making the ban sets out a time limit and unbans the person after that much time has passed (or the person sends them a PM to remind them that the time has elapsed—occasionally mods do forget that the ban was supposed to be lifted on noon that day, or whatever).

What you seem to want isn't temp bans, but temp bans that are removed automatically (ie it's exactly 24 hours instead of 24 hours plus a little bit more for the banning mod to sign on and remove it).

I'm bad, and that's good. I will never be good, and that's not bad. There's no one I'd rather be than me.

I'm guessing that if it's a temporary ban, the person in question would likely be PM'd when it's over?

[up] Good guess on my part. Dang Ninjas. tongue

"Indefinite" means "has no predetermined time span" That means they last as long or as short a time as we decide. Generally, I'll set a time either when I drop the hammer on them or when I hear back from someone I've forum banned, and that time will often be affected by how they responded.

If their response indicates that they know what they were doing that got them hammered and that they'll clean up their act, the time will be relatively short — three days to week, usually.

If they pitch a fit at me for daring to ban them; try to defend themselves on the grounds that what the other guy was doing wrong, too; or offer similar responses that indicate that they either don't know or don't care what got the in trouble, the time is likely to be lengthened.

If their response is along the lines of a screaming rant about what a fascist, white-folk-hating, abuser of power with dictatorial delusions I am, (and yes, every single one of those has actually been leveled at me in at least one "appeal" of a forum temp bantongue), the temp ban is likely to turn permanent.

[up]Hmm. A ban timer, then, not an auto-banner? That could be handy.

^ See, how is an auto-banner going to be able to tell if that post after the "stop it" from the mods was continuing what they were told to stop, or something that's completely acceptable?

You're not talking about a simple widget here, you're talking about something that can parse content and act based on previous data — you're talking AI on a moderately-high complexity level.

A timer, then. Ok, a timer would be nice. I'm not following how that connects with someone posting five minutes after a warning being posted and a temp ban being automatically dropped, rather than locking the thread.
