That study is bullcrap.

Dead Space is not scary in the least bit. Intense? Maybe. But OOGA BOOGA is not scary.

Amnesia deserves that title the most.

OK, so what would you like to see in Dead Space 3? New protagonist, maybe?

Sure. Why not?

Its not like Isaac was all that deep of a character, even after 2. Even so, I think he deserves to be able to take a break.

I mean resident evil didn't stick with just one character, did it?

Just to point out: in the video the reporter says that they got a peek at Dead Space 2, which he claims is in development at this time.

Could be a misunderstanding on his part, and could be that the EA guys just showed him and the camera some DS2 resources to make them go away, so potentially there's nothing new in this video at all.

By the way, the purpose of the visit to EA was to cover FIFA 2011. That bit is an excerpt from a ten minute video. sad I sure hate my country sometimes.

Finding reasons to continue to justify a randomly unlucky engineer schmuck's repeated confrontations with the zom-Imeannecromorphs does seem a bit strained. The believability of the premise would flow a lot easier if you were allowed to hop into the shoes of random soldiers, Unitologists and whatnot from time to time.

Furthermore, I think Guantanamo must be destroyed.

Why are people so surprised about this? The ending of 2 was an obvious sequel hook.

Personally I think that the original Dead Space may have been more frightening. If only because it involved more of the unknown and gave a better sense of isolation since Issac didn't talk or remove his helmet until the end.

I found Dead Space 2 a little too combat-oriented. In the first game, different kinds of enemies existed to provide different kinds of tension. With this one, though, new enemies were clearly developed to provide different tactical challenges. The sneaky ones that charge you wore thin pretty fast, despite how cool their introduction was.

At this stage, Dead Space was a whole might be too far gone to classify as "horror" any longer. There's not a whole lot of mystery left and after two games, most people will be well-used to the monsters. And if you get a lot of power nodes towards the beginning of the game and spend them wisely, you'll also be very health and ammo efficient, meaning that you'll be gaining resources very effectively throughout.

To my mind, the best wide-release horror game out there is still the GCN Resident Evil remake. It keeps you in the dark about the whole string of events all the way through the game, giving limited resources and pretty mediocre weapons. You only pick up details through finding various scrawlings, and they don't always illuminate; sometimes they deepen the mystery. In addition, it's a small, consistent environment wherein you have free range to explore if you're that daring. There's a real sense that you're locked in and that you have to survive within the bounds of that limited environment.

Science determines Dead Space 2 to be the scariest Xbox 360 game
Looking at the article, they actually proved it to be the most startling of a selection of four games.

Not going to get 3, for the same reason I didn't get 2. Dead Space was capable of startling me and squicking me out, but at no point did I feel actual fear. The plot was okay, I guess, but there's better out there, so I wouldn't buy it for that. Stripped of the nonexistent but heavily-hyped horror and the lackluster storytelling, it's just another action game.

The closest Dead Space ever got me to feeling fear was during my impossible difficulty run. I dreaded running into the Hunter. Mostly because it was a huge ammo dump to slow it down.

Not to say it didn't make me jump a few times. The jump scares worked. However, that just ends with a single moment of "OH ITS A BOOGLY and now its dead."

yeah they're pretty much Third Person Shooters dressed up like a horror game. Not that that's a bad thing, I love the games and I think it has some really good moments.

While I liked both dead space and dead space 2 unless they can pull something new out of the bag dead space 3 could be a let down. I would like the following to be in the game.

  • More zero gravity and vacuum sections
  • more unpredictable scares, the air vent trick got old after a while.
  • more characters that actually do something, rather than die in vast numbers.
    • Perhaps team of people each with their own mental issues to address.
  • New necromorphs, possibly necromorphs forming from the remains of other necromorphs your previously killed.
  • better mental breakdown effects and more off them, hallucinations that leave you guessing about what's really happening

What do you think the setting should be? I say it should be a prison planet.

The setting has to be one with lots of people, for er, resources, prison planet is a possibility, new colony or a city far from help is another.

I don't think there were any air vent scares in the second one. I remember watching every vent very closely and not encountering a single scare. I think enemies still spawned from vents sometimes, but not suddenly and right next to you.

Actually, I think the Ubermorph scared me when it came out of a vent once, but that wasn't exactly a scripted event.

I'd be interested in larger rooms which the Necromorph AI could traverse in sneaky ways, and less scripted attacks. The first game had more of the AI climbing through vents behind you and being clever, and there were less paths for the things to travel around in 2. Shame.
