Let's be honest here. The Hatedom for Call Of Duty, specifically the Modern Warfare games, seems disproportionately higher than what many other video game series get, getting tons of grief from both shooter and non-shooter fans.

Why is this? Is it really because they're disproportionately bigger sellers? Perhaps it's just like Halo all over again?

Well before this gets locked...

Personally I dislike that due to them being so massively popular, other companies go out of their way to try to emulate Call of Duty. If everyone kept doing their own thing while Call of Duty had its numbers I wouldn't mind so much. Even the new ace combat is emulating Call of Duty (the developers themselves have said so)

The singleplayer is dull, with it being whack a mole where the enemy has perfect accuracy on higher difficulties meaning you just pop out of cover, get shot, then wait. Its slow and is boring.

Multiplayer is also bad. Leveling up in a FPS is completely unfair and ruins any chance of balance. A bad player can do better than a good player if he played longer.

The fanbase in general is also quite horrid, attracting many younger players, as well as what me and some friends call "Dudebros" who play nothing but Modern Warfare and think you are a faggot for playing other games.

This sounds like a complaint thread ready to happen.

But I will say its possible because of the fact that is that they are justthe same games every year, with new maps being the only new thing going for them.

I remember when Call of Duty was a well respected franchise.

The thing is, I think it's only after Modern Warfare 2 was released that derision really began being heaped upon it.

For me, its that it barely changes anything. Its the Madden of the FPS world. Same guns, same explosives, same everything, with barely any changes at all.

Not to mention that my roommate in college only played that and yelled racist and homophobic epithets while playing it, but that could happen to any game.

Actually, I wish that they'd divorced the original Call of Duty name from the Modern Warfare series. I imagine that a significant chunk - maybe even a majority - of the Modern Warfare fandom isn't even aware of the original Second World War games.

Call of Duty used to be a refreshing change from Medal of Honor, where you were pretty much a super soldier. Call of Duty advertised itself more as you just being a normal soldier in a massive war (Look at the Stalingrad level in 1, damn that was awesome, you weren't even given a gun!)

By Call of Duty 4 you were a super soldier.

[up] Probably not. Hell I think the words MODERN WARFARE are bigger than the actual words call of duty, if even there at all.

Well, there's the irony - the original plan was to launch Modern Warfare as a brand new IP, but Activision insisted that it retain the "Call of Duty" moniker for marketability.

I disagree that you were a super-soldier in the first Modern Warfare, both the USMC and SAS characters were still very much members of a team. It was only in the second that you became an unstoppable action hero guy.

They could have kept it at Modern Warfare 1 and called it a day. The plot wasn't really left hanging or anything.

Multiplayer is also bad. Leveling up in a FPS is completely unfair and ruins any chance of balance. A bad player can do better than a good player if he played longer.
The high level guns aren't really superior to the lower level ones in COD though.

I saw an ad for Black Ops round the time it came out, and tacked on at the end of it was "Play the original!" with a picture of Call of Duty 4.

I was kinda mad.

Fucking...graaahh!

What annoys me the most is that not one of the sequels has ever managed to do anything on a par with this:

and now it's like the first Call of Duty never existed.

It just means that higher level players have better selection, not better guns overall.

Which is still bad. Better, true, but not good.

I think World at War and Black Ops had good campaigns, but that was it. While Wa W's online was okay, Black Ops was basically peekaboo with guns. And don't get me started on MW 2. Returned that shit within a week.

Also, zombies are always fun.

I really don't have anything against the game itself, not that I will likely ever buy a copy but to each there own. If I had any complaints it would be that people are ripping off the trends it set, regardless if they make any sense in other games...yeah pretty much the same complaint about Halo and I thought that was a good game, the first Halo anyway.

I don't where they're getting this idea that because Modern Warfare sells well we will too if we be just like it. If I wanted Modern Warfare I'd likely get it, not the knock off and it's a high seller but not that high. The Sandbox games, they have been trying to stand out from Grand Theft Auto ever since Vice City and Grand Theft Auto sells better than Call Of Duty and Modern Warfare. I don't like Sonic but to Sega's credit they realized they'd never get on top if they kept making a Mario knockoff, Mario sells better than Call Of Duty.

Ace Combat Example, make it like Call Of Duty? You think that's going to make pancakes? Either marketing is naive or the developers are lazy but whatever flaws are inherent to Modern Warfare/Call Of Duty itself don't matter to me.

What I think has already been said. Too many clones, same game released over and over again.

That, and there was this douchebag who lived down the street a year or so ago. For a while after Modern Warfare 2's release, he was a Co D addict and accused anybody in the same room as his X Box 360 as people using him to play Modern Warfare 2, and nothing else. Talking to a blind Co D fan online is already irritating, but in real life they are SUPER annoying.

Oh, reasons to re add tainted by the fanbase. We need that page back. Disliking something is fine but disliking it because a jerk likes it isn't really valid criticism. Yes, a Darth Wiki page that isn't complaining I think.

Getting my two cents in before the inevitable lock. I could go on about how the latest iterations of the franchise are lowest-common denominator schlock that are utterly indistinguishable from the stable of fear-mongering shooters oversaturating the market, but let me be honest. I don't really care about that. I try my hardest to avoid games like that and I still end up with a decent sized collection. I am not affected by this flood of brown and gray shooters. No, it's the people who play Call of Duty and how they infest the online multiplayer of the other games they play. Same reason I can't stand Halo; it's a good game and I like to play it with my friends, but everyone else with a mic can fuck off.

Because Sturgeon's Law is a percentage, i.e. more sales equals more douchebags and increases the chance to get into direct contact with said douchebags and people thinking the fanbase is nothing but them. Plus it's far from being innovative and still sells well and sets a bad precedent other developers will ape sooner or later.
