This week, on Last Exile!

Well heck, Luscinia had no intention of making peace did he? At least, not a peace that wasn't under his own terms.

With the 1st and 2nd Fleets following his plans, who would have thought that the Alliance would have to stick with Orang for help, now that Vasant's gone.

And Sara? A Maestro? More likely she's yet another girl born from a Key's bloodline. But holy heck, so the Goddess is really this Super-Exile called the Grand Exile? That doesn't look like a colony ship to me, but a battleship. And wow, talk about powerful... It essentially annihilated the 3rd Fleet in one shot. Its great that Orang survived and all, but now that he's witnessed its power...

Since Commie caught up, I went on a download spree.

Just watched Episode 18, and I honestly think that this episode is solid proof that Fam is better than the original. For instance, Fam decides to not simply becoming a soldier, but rather fight the Sky Pirate way. It takes an incredible integrity to be able to not kill when your enemies are willing to kill you. Call it naivete, it's still brave.

Orang and Sorush also have an interesting relationship, and it really shows just how much more layered the villains are in this series. Sorush had an epic sendoff. Gotta feel sorry for Sara, though.

Gonna put up impressions of Episode 19 and 20 soon.

EDIT: Episode 20 19: Sadris being awesome and the Silvius being SUPER AWESOME. Oh and a truce that strains my suspension of disbelief.

EDIT AGAIN: Episode 20: So it was nice to see that the peace didn't just happen, that their peace was a strained one, there are hints as to Fam's bloodline, we got some interesting exposition about the Guild and Exiles, and Liliana's death will have many consequences, chief among them reminding Luscinia of his weakness and Millia inheriting the power over the Turan Exile. Nice informative episode.

Just watched episode 21. Two major thoughts:

Come on... I understand you are trying to fit some more Character Development in, but that is a quite blatant (and, IMO, anoying) use of Talking Is a Free Action.

Someone is taking notes from Ace Combat.

Yeah, that thing was ridiculous. And I'm really intrigued by something I saw in the preview for next week...is that Millia being all captain-y in a Silvius officer uniform?! And I saw Tatiana and Alister in their flight suits...I get this odd feeling that they're going to go out in their vanship while Millia captains the ship. I...guess she's ready for that? Maybe?

The implication is indeed that. Do take note though that Milia's likely been reading up on the ops manual of the Silvius this entire time, since their escape from Liliana in episode 10 in fact. Knowing about something, and practical experience are different matters entirely though, so we'll have to see if she manages to command the ship properly (and I think she will, as she DID take command of the Anshar during the Boreas battle).

This week on Last Exile!

Its the climax to the series, and the battle lines are drawn, with Luscinia's Grand Exile and Sadri's 1st Fleet on one side, and the Alliance along with Orang's 3rd Fleet on the other. There's no choice but to fight, as Luscinia is dead-set on seeing things through until the bitter end, until peace is taken on his terms... or he kills everyone else trying to stop him.

We get confirmation that, yes, Kayvan is as good as space dust, but we have a surprising arrival for the Alliance side in the form of Sorush and his 4th Fleet (which made me go, huh?!?). Despite this gathering of forces, things are REALLY stacked against the Alliance, and the only real way to stop Luscinia is to get Sara back from him... Meaning someone needs to get into the Grand Exile to do so.

Guess who gets the job? With Dian along for the ride (to babysit Al, who as an Exile Key can pinpoint where Sara is in the Grand Exile), and Tatiana and her vanship squads as escort, it's up to (obviously) Fam to get Sara back. Of course GETTING inside the Grand Exile is easier said than done, and the Alliance takes heavy losses in trying (including Turan's Exile, vaporized in trying to prevent the Turanian capital from being destroyed)... but help finally arrives in the form of the Urbanus, Silvana, and the Anatoray fleet (gotta love Sadri's "Oh, drat" expression as he saw the Silvana)!

Ah, nostalgia.

Looks like an explosive finish to the series. The thing is though, everything seems to be hinging on Fam (of all people!) trying to talk Luscinia down. And I'm not really sure that's even POSSIBLE.

This week on Last Exile!

Well that was... convenient. So as expected, Fam pretty much talks Luscinia in giving back Sara. Which apparently was what Luscinia was thinking of in the first place. What?

And we finally have our confirmation that Sadri was Fam's grandfather. It was kind of a cop out that he never told her himself, but I suppose there's all the hang-ups being related to a Hafez loyalist that he didn't want Fam to experience.

So we get our happy ending, but boy was it a strange two episodes to get there. We have our Grand Race, a peek at all the missing characters from the first series. Oh and surprises, like Kayvan being alive. Sorush was one thing, but Kayvan? Oh Gonzo.

Ah Dio, success is fleeting isn't it?

There's also a new chapter for the Travelers manga too.

So we finally see the Earth Guild's base and... It's intimidating to say the least. Not exactly the type of place one can take on with just a single dinky Anatoray fighter-vanship. Heck, I don't think the two Claim-Solais class ships can make a dent in it.

We also see how Claus REALLY is the best pilot from Prester... though apparently only with Lavie as his navi, as she's the only one who can keep up with him. Poor Tatiana; being called 'Lavie' in the heat of battle sure did a number on the girl.

So what do we have? Claus and Tatiana are shot down, and Tatiana wants to know how Claus feels about her — romantically that is. But this is Claus after all... There IS a reason why Oblivious to Love is listed in the character list.

Well, Fam's crying in the final episode is so...well.

But the one involving Sadri? It's a Tear Jerker.

A better question is why is Kayvan still in one piece, as unlike Sorush he doesn't have the excuse of having a flagship that was still in a state that it was still salvageable. The 2nd Fleet was vaporized after all.

Sorush hides a whole fleet for a couple of episodes. I can accept that some must be repaired but I don't think all of them fall into the ravine (please correct me if I'm mistaken). I don't think they are captured either. So maybe Kayvan uses the same Ades fleet hiding method Sorush did.

[up]

There is a very simple why it took a few episodes for Sorush's fleet to get out of the ravine . The ravine is too deep for any ship to fly out of it. So the survivors of the bridge falling were trapped under there, both a few friends and foe fleets. They most likely banded together down there to survive.

However, they got out once the 1st fleet blew a large amount of rocks from the side of the ravine into it, raising the altitude limit to ground level. This would allow any trapped ships down there to fly out of it.

Also, any one else feel like the series should of gone on 1 to maybe 2 more episodes? the final 4-5 felt kind of rushed...

MyssaRei Since: Feb, 2010

[up]

Because it was rushed. Do take note that, despite reserving 24 broadcast episodes, there were only 21 real episodes the studio could actually work with, as the first slot was used up for the First Flight episode (episode 0, with commentary), and the other two for recaps.

So that was... a train wreck. Every week I found myself wondering why I was still watching, praying it would get better the next week.

It never did.

The plot didn't remotely hold together. The technology didn't make sense. The characters had no development (except Millia) and inscrutable motivations. The only full positive I can give it is that the visuals were very pretty and the character designs were solid.

Somehow it kept feeling like it was on the verge of doing something really cool. There was so much potential here. But then... none of it was remotely put to good use. What a disappointment, given how good the original Last Exile was.

Final rating: 5.5/10.

[up] I'm sorry, the original Last Exile was good?

Hate to necro an old thread, but I've just watched Last Exile ep 21 (Commie numbering) and yes I'm late to the party because Commie was late. Anyhow, it unfolded pretty much as expected. Augusta being the key to some Exile superweapon.

Dio is cool too.

Despite what people might say about Fam herself, there's still a lot to enjoy about Silver Wing. The OST for one is (personal opinion caveat) much better than the first season, and the world setting is overall much more colorful than what we got with Prester. The villains this time around are also much more, shall we say, human, in that they have understandable motivations. Okay, some people love Delphine for being such a one-dimensional for the LULZ character and as such so EASY to despise, but I like my badguys with a little more meat to them.

[up] I'm actually quite surprised that the original seems to get a lot more praise, considering the subpar execution of its story. I mean, Fam has pacing problems, but at least it didn't spend a bunch of episodes building up Claus's harem.

And yes, the story is more clearly told, the soundtrack is better, and the worldbuilding is much more descriptive. I'd even say that the characters generally have more, well, character. While I do think that Fam (and maybe Gisey) wasn't a great main character, it was at least offset by Millia's presence.

I honestly think that people are just blinded by nostalgia, as the first Last Exile really isn't that good.

I rewatched the original LE during Fam's run, and I stand by loving every minute of it. Sure, the pacing was questionable in the middle, but on the whole I think it was a fantastic series.

[up][up]

People like Guardian Enzo (and more than a few people my age actually) really put the first season on a high pedestal. I think it's good, but the execution was seriously lacking in much of the middle parts (aka the Claus harem building portion). Personally I see it as hovering the high 80s, meaning it's something I can recommend to friends, but not a work of art.

Silver Wing ranks lower, because the first thing you notice about the show is its main characters, and Fam and Gisey... aren't all that compelling. Okay, Claus is kind of bland and seriously dense when it comes to love (more obvious in the most recent chapters of Hourglass) but at least he doesn't whine all the time, and actually fights for his convictions. Fam... just complains about the situation, and often ends up not doing anything important (aside from carrying Milia around).

We have Milia, but she's sharing airtime with the two, so what development she gets is offset by the static character of Fam.

[up] Understandable. What I'm baffled about is the difference in the reception, because when you get right down to it, Last Exile, even if you consider it better than Fam, is not an excellent series by any means, and yet it is treated like it is, and somehow Fam is treated like it's crap.

Fam and Gisey are boring main characters, but I personally feel the same way about Claus.
