I really want to get my hands on a copy of Tali-Ihantala 1944
.
Ah, my favourite non-English language films. I could have a nice, fun, time-wasting experience an overly big list just to establish my own pomposity on the subject. I'll, erm, think about it. Maybe later.
A lot of good films mentioned already. Though I tend to say Ikiru is my favourite Kurosawa film (I know some don't like its sort-of-sugary aftertaste and perhaps slightly off-beat pacing) and Amarcord is my favourite Fellini film (I like his early realist stuff, but you can't beat the cigarette shop lady). Probably just to be a little contrarian, but those are honest opinions either way.
While we're talking "auteur" directors (which we seem to do more often with foreign cinema for obvious reasons), three other favourites of mine would be Woyzeck, The Idiots (which I take my name here from; I put together some of the Wiki article together for it) and An Actors Revenge.

Oh, has anyone said The Twilight Samurai yet? That one is easily one of the best movies of the 2000's.

"Delenda est." "Furthermore, Carthage must be destroyed." -Common Roman saying at the end of speeches.I just watched The Twilight Samurai based on your suggestions. I was a bit skeptical at first because the production values were somewhat meh, but it turned out to be extremely exceptional.
"Sarchasm: The gulf between the author of sarcastic wit and the person that doesn't get it."I see this thread is six years old, and I understand that bumping old threads is frowned upon in some contexts, but this seems like it should be OK for a catch-all thread.
I am working my way through Dersu Uzala, which won the Oscar for foreign language film, and also was the only movie Akira Kurosawa ever directed that wasn't in Japanese (it's in Russian). Unfortunately the only version I could find on Amazon was dubbed. The DVD was out of print and copies were $50 or more. Sad that well-known films from a great director can't be found in a decent format.
How could that not be readily available?
Last foreign film I saw was Cinema Paradiso which was a little disappointing to me. I mean, it's definitely a movie lover's film but it's kind of cheesy at times and the idea of leaving a cruddy, old town and never looking back bit bothered me. But, damn, that ending was great.
"It's true that we had a gentleman's agreement, but unfortunately, I am no gentleman."I really don't feel that this topic serves any purpose that fits with our general rules on the Media forums.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"

Timecrimes. Run Lola Run. Metropolis. Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon.
It's been forever since I saw Seven Samurai; I really need to rewatch it.
