That's on my (long) list of Things To Get To Someday. Since I'm something of a fanfic junkie at this point, I might even get to it before I die of old age.
Link? trope page? something?
Is using "Julian Assange is a Hillary butt plug" an acceptable signature quote?I just stumbled across something and remembered the thread title here:
Unbent, Unbowed, Unbroken. Unrelated ME1 FanficI like the premise, think I'll give it a shot.
Is using "Julian Assange is a Hillary butt plug" an acceptable signature quote?![]()
Well, it seems even if there is no connection to "Victoria Bitter", even then what the author has done so far is pretty wank-tastic.
But you're right of course. This in itself says nothing about the fic in question, and one can simply enjoy it.
And it seems there actually is a TV Tropes page for it: Dumbledores Army And The Year Of Darkness .
Unbent, Unbowed, Unbroken. Unrelated ME1 Fanfic^ Yeah, I mean, Snape has to have been bad, but Ginny agreed to name one of her kids after him.
('Course, there is a kid running around named Anakin Solo, so I suppose anything's possible in theory.)
A True Lady's Quest - A Jojo is You!![]()
Someone on the trope page posted a link to Thanfiction's discussion about why he made Snape evil. It boiled down to
A)There's enough wiggle room in Canon that he could have been EEEEVVVVIIIILLL or sobbing himself to sleep over what the Carrows were doing, so he took Option 1, because...
B)It made for a better story.
Re: Wank- *shrugs* I went on to the Facebook Fan Page for the story, and the author seems, while a little... intense about things, not overly Wank-erific.
But, as is said, that's neither here nor there when it comes to the story. Why I liked it (and the 'verse surrounding it) is that all the characters seemed very real- reading the short "Backstory Fics", so to speak, really bought everyone to life.
Well, that's a little lazy. Outwardly-evil-secretly-good Snape is not only closer to canon, it's a decent writing challenge to set oneself. To avoid it entirely in favour of what thanfiction went with seems a shame to me.
A True Lady's Quest - A Jojo is You!"I think that you can use the leeway JKR has given to argue for a somewhat more lenient Snape, and you could make it work without contradicting canon. However, you can't swing the "Snape would never have HURT them on PURPOSE and if he did he'd have cried all NITE cuz he was GOOD!" that I see so often. And for the record, I don't think that's what you're arguing here.
As I said, you could take the path of, no pun intended, less resistence, but that is where you have to look at your options as a writer. This is something I brought up on the old ff.net forum, but it's still true. A story is only as compelling as its conflict. The tale of a man walking a block in a warm summer cloudburst that makes his clothing uncomfortable and his sandwitch soggy is not an interesting read in itself. The tale of a man crawling, wading, struggling his way down the same block in the teeth of a hurricane is gripping.
If all canon gives is us "Joe looked again at the growling dog, wondering whether or not the chain-link leash was just for show," it could be anything from a teacup Yorkie to a rabid Mastiff-wolf hybrid.
I chose the wolf hybrid because, simply, it makes a better story. More dramatic, more compelling, better tension, higher stakes, better opportunity for character development and unexpected twists. This post was really about how it couldn't be a friendly dog, and why the wolf-hybrid was not "against canon." Not that it couldn't possibly be another kind of dog."
Here we go. Found it. It's not the best explanation, but, eh, I enjoyed the fic, and didn't care that Snape was a bad guy. It worked in context.
Apparently I can't link to the post due to being a new account. Well, there's a link in the Article's discussion page.

Well, looks like Thanfiction's back on the 'net after a few months absence. A Deviant Art update says he'll be getting back to writing the third fic soon. Which is good, I was enjoying it, and look forward to reading the rest of it.
Those who like Dark Fic will like Dark Fic regardless. Unfortunately I have already reached Darkness-Induced Audience Apathy and am about ready to say the Eight Deadly Words.
All the spectacular wank (which was hysterically funny until it turned, literally, deadly serious) is a completely different subject.

I'm sorry, but even discounting the flaws of the story in and of itself (the sexism, the testosterone-poisoning, the dodgy research, the Ireland-fetishism, and so on) I'm just not comfortable gushing about a piece of fiction derived from the mythology of the author's now-defunct cult
. Particularly relevant posts are here
and here
.
Thanfiction is a fucking horrifying human being.
What's precedent ever done for us?![]()

...Wow. That's quite disturbing.
Hopefully this will put an end to the "soulbonding is harmless" crap.
Another person involved in this affair wrote a book about it:

Erupting volcanoes are fascinating, but you don't want to be anywhere near them.
(to silver 2195): I wouldn't trust too much that's in that book - it was published for money, its accuracy is debatable, and the writer has since - especially recently - gone way over the brink in her obsession with people and events from 10 years ago.
(to Iaculus) I don't know. Working your batshit out on paper in a fictional format can sometimes be therapeutic - doesn't mean it's good writing or pleasurable reading, though. (IMHO it's neither.)

I just read Dumbledore's Army and the Year of Darkness, and it's probably the best fanfic I've ever read.
Everyone felt real. I'd heard some rumblings about sexism and OOC'ness, but I didn't notice any of that. So I'm here to gush.
Edit: *facepalm* Yeah, here's a link to the Fic. http://www.fanfiction.net/s/4315906/1/bDumbledore_bs_bArmy_b_and_the_bYear_b_of_bDarkness_b
