Idea for forum thread-specific rules:

Go To

Okay, so there have been long-running threads (such as Fetishes, Entries That Make You Go "Wut" and Edit Banned) that got locked for getting out of hand.

Now, while some have proposed adding rules, it has been shot down with the issue that it would have to be on the first page, which some would not read.

Now, this is really just an idea, but what if you could attach a header-thing to threads that would appear at the top and bottom areas of threads that outlined the rules specific to said thread?

For instance, if implemented, the Edit Banned thread could have a banner that said stuff like "No Gravedancing Whatsoever". You know, stuff specific to that thread to make sure that people who want to post can keep the thread from getting out of hand.

This could also work for Forum Game threads, Media threads, long-running TRS and IP threads...the possibilities would be myriad if we could code something like this, especially since it could staunch thread-hopping quite a bit, if not stop it entirely.

Huh, it's weird that no one thought of this earlier.

It would make more sense to put the message on the add post screen for the thread. I'll look into it.

Or that, that works as well.

And to expand on the idea: The person who creates the topic can put the rules in themselves and edit them as needed, but a mod can also change them if need be.

Kinda obvious, but I just want to make sure that's clear.

Nope. That sounds like ownership, to me. Threads will belong to the forum, not to individuals.

Maybe just a little button to change the thread rules then. Like we have to link crowners and lock threads.

Isn't that what the opening post is for? And besides only threads like eg.: roleplay sections or On Topic Conversations wouls truly benefit from it... yet they already do from the opening post. Isn't that hard to reach, either.

I can see this Being really helpful In the TRS. It could be used to provide a summary for the really long repairs, So points wouldn't be brought up twice.

I know they can just look at the first post. But when a thread reaches 150+ posts, no one wants to read that that far back. Having a running summary might get more people helping.

[up] There's a small link that says "1" and heads right to the first page, first post, when the amount of pages has reached any N > 1. I guess it would be good to simply make that link more notable. For any thread the opening post is relevant and good to have accesible, not just TRS stuff, and not just at TV Tropes.

[down] Why can't the firs post be edited with updated information? I'd surmise those who care enough to bring up a subject would try to keep a hold on it.

The opening post in the TRS generally is fairly useless after a fair amount of conversation has gone on. A place to have a running summary of the points that have come up and the arguments made is not.

[up][up]Because it would just be easier to have it readily accessible on every page. It would also be useful in the case of an OP who stops following the thread for whatever reason and therefore isn't around to edit the first post. There have also been cases where the OP is obviously biased towards particular points.

There's also the fact that people will skip ahead to the last page, or if they used the "Mark as read" button, they would never see the first post.

So we need an actual way for them to see the rules for sure.

Yeah, like I said, this would cut down on some things that are associated with thread-hopping (like not knowing what was discussed beforehand, for starters).

EDIT: Anyways, what's the progress, Eddie?
