Does anyone remember this show?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Replacements_(TV_series)

And does anyone think it deserved to last as long as it did?

I'll post my thoughts on it later...

I remember not liking it, does that help? I'd say I was glad it ended but I didn't even notice it disappeared, it just sort of fell off the radar after an overly-aggressive ad campaign and a stupid catchy theme I was actually singing in my head a week ago.

[up] Don't feel bad. I felt that this show was only a step above the Buzz on Maggie, which sucked royal ass- FACT. But that comparisions is like comparing a way which is more painful to die than another. Simply put, it was better nad lasted longer than the Buzz on Maggie, but it still was pretty bland, lame, and almost unwatchable withh all of its weaknesses holding it back.

This show was great, even more so when they decided to turn the 'replacing people' thing into the artifact and focus on the family dynamic they had established instead.

[up] It wasn't enough, though. More people hated this show than liked it. I think it's because the humor and characters were both too mean-spirited for their own good, if such a thing is possible, which trite Mc Farlane has made proves it.

But that's just one reason I can think of why this show wasn't well recieved. Thoguh I agree focusing more on character develop-ment could have helped this show - it would've helped more if they had done it to begin with rather than its weak relicae on its truly weak concept.

How can one take something that sounds brilliant and fail to drive out its full potential? Well, Dsney did it. And this isn't the only time.

Let me guess: this is going to turn into another Seth MacFarlane hate thread. Do you really have anything else to do (I know that I'm in the minority here but MacFarlane is NOT the worst animator ever)? Also, MacFarlane had absolutely nothing to do with this show.

Back on topic, I'm a bit amazed that this show managed to get Bonnie Wright, Bruce Campbell and Michael York to do voices.

[up]Better say it here: I think this show is a bit too mean-spirited for its own good (ALMOST much like Mc Farlane's shit). I know Mc Farlane had nothing to do with this, I'm not stupid.

Okay, I may be overexaggerating on this crack, but this show still is too much of an asshole to the viewer to be likeable to me. I'm not expecting chaotically nice or anything like that, so don't get it twisted. Otherwise, I'd be watching some preschool BS I don't need to be wasting time on at all. Trust me.

Fuck, I should not have even mentioned the guy's name; I knew this was going to get someone on my case.

I remember intensely disliking the premise. And not having my dislike of it decreased much by watching an episode or two.

Though I remember there was movie in the 90's (or maybe 80's) with something similar that I didn't dislike so much. Hrm...

[up][up][up][up]I'd love to give a well thought out response, but what you have described is simply way too far removed from my experience watching the show that I see no common ground with which to discuss the series. I think we have to agree to disagree.

My favorite joke in the entire series was in how the robot body guard in (I believe) the first episode got the teacher to mark Todd right when he said that the first president was "George Stapler," and then until the very end of the series the school they went to was "George Stapler Middle School"

[up] The show did have some decent jokes, but for some reason, that wasn't enough. I have to like the characters telling them to really feel invested. This is important, no, ESSENTIAL.

I dug The Replacements, I don't know about any of this "mean-spiritness." Although, this thread is obviously just your excuse to curse out a show you don't like.

I didn't hate it, but I didn't care one way or the other when I saw the ads. This came from a time when Disney was still trying to find its franchise cartoon like the way Nickelodeon did in the 90's, so the over-saturation and repetition really didn't excite me anymore.

[up][up][up]I honestly do not recall seeing any mean-spiritedness in the characters of the show.

[up] Great, now I feel I am being harsh on this show. But it just felt certain characters, like Todd for example, came off as assholes to me. I know it was meant to be a "boys will be boys" thing, but it simply wasn't enough excuse of any kind.

[up][up][up] Really, now? Because this show did have some moments that show it wasn't the work of some commitee who thinks they know what kids want to see (and they don't) to me. Now if you want a show that deserves nothing but bashing... But no one has time for that.

[up][up] Selfishness, yes. Mean-spiritedness, only with the cheerleader gal. Otherwise the characters are your stock personalities. But the overall Anvillicious moral was that those adults getting in your way are like that because they have good reason to.

It was an ok show. It had its funny moments. Maybe the LA dub is better than the original or I have low standards. I think two seasons was more than the show would ever dream of.

[up][up][up][up] Welcome to the world of animated sitcoms. Really, the only one I can think of right now that doesn't have a selfish male main character is Phineas and Ferb.

[up][up][up][up] I think you really hit home with this. Wow... And for the record, I really don't hate this show... At least not anymore.

But was I really overexaggerating that much about it?

[up]-_-...........-_-

PROS:

  • The main characters and thier frined they surrouund themselves with are great. So is their chemistry- hence why you can bring yourself to like someone who is a bully like Bruford, for example. And don't get me started on how funn Perry and Doofenschrimtz are together, plese.

  • It's definitely a show deserving of its popularity and life span, not just because of its characters, but because of how well it executes its concept. Phineas and Ferb may seem like kids with too much time on their hands, but they could go places worldwide with the stuff they do. Simple as that. We don't et enough protagonists or adventures from youngling characters like them.

Most of the time, we get angsty people who cojmplain too much and are more watchable only to see them suffer for complaining too much and not taking enough action like P&F and Co. do.

CONS:

  • It just feels really... Repetitive, to me. Hence why I can't watch it too much without wanting to do something else.

  • And am I the only one who hates Candice? I ould be proud my brothers could do all this shit, not trying to ruin their fun like a fascist, which this girl comes off as to me. Also, why is she always obsessing over Jeremy, when they're already a couple?! It's just pathetic and seems like the elephant inthe room, getting in my way.

This is what I got... I'll post more if I can, but take note - I may not like this show, but it's life-cycles ahead of the Replacements, which is just a guilty pleasure that makes me ashamed of even saying "I don't hate it", when there is a lot to hate about it.

I didn't like the show. The biggest problem for me would be that in Season 2, the writers would have to give Sheldon a role no matter how stupid (like the space episode). He was annoying back in Season 1, Season 2 also flanderized him (which is very incredible for a stereotype like him). I didn't watch all the episodes, so feel free to correct me about Sheldon.

[up] The writers clearly didn't want this character in the show, but were forced to use him anyway, I'll bet.

Hopefully such unfortunate BS hasn't tainted the writers' resumes...

This is an example of what happens when your show is mostly commitee-driven rather than creator-driven!

[up] And Todd's voiced by Nancy Cartwright, Bart Simpson's voice actress. Todd sounds like a higher-pitched, more screechy Bart IMO.
