He was definitely helping this kid out. If his mother was a dangerous person, then doubly so. She might hurt someone here in the Academy.

Kyrio is a VERY big name. For reasons almost uniformly bad.

Wonderful! Thought Lukos to himself.

As Matthew and Blake- heck even that skeleton...thing too -ignored Lukos' presence, and walked back towards the others, Lukos took this opportunity to look around, and find the relic.

Now then, time to find that relic...stone... rock... meteor... thing...

Giving off an uncertain smile, Lukos silently headed in a random direction, exploring the Academy and whatever it may have in store for him.

"What the hell are you doing?" "I'm playing a role, sir, what are you doing?"

And so, as Mathew and... some boy walked up the stairs, Raymond was about to say, 'So, who is this lovely little scoundrel?", but before he could do so, he noticed something wrong; someone was missing.

"Ahem...", he asked, his right eyebrow raised, with just a hint of a smile on the right corner of his mouth, "where's the man you were with, Matthew? And what's his name anyway?"

Charles mentally summed up what he knew about the situation.

Firstly, a very suspicious-looking party had turned up at the top of the stairs, and he was pretty sure they weren't members of the Academy. Is that a gun?

Secondly, the teenager who he'd caught eavesdropping had started talking about murderous parents - in the Academy, no less - and he wasn't too pleased with the insinuation. That man's casual talk about a man named Kyrio hadn't helped matters. The name was familiar, and it didn't sound good... but he couldn't recall where he'd heard it before.

Thirdly, that lupine-looking fellow with the white hair had gone missing. He didn't appreciate strangers skulking around the premises like that.

"Excuse me, gentlemen... and lady," he called out, attracting their attention. "I'm fairly sure you aren't staff here, and I don't know enough about your families to comment, but what I do know is that if it's a crime you need sorted out, perhaps you should approach the legal authorities. Now, would you care to explain yourselves, or shall I show you all how to call the police?"

Raymond moved straight to the the railings surrounding floor, specifically the one nearest the voice that called out, and upon looking down, whipped out his right gun, and pointed it at what appeared to be a skeleton. "Sorry if you don't think this is appropriate behavior," said Raymond hastily, with his eyes now narrowed at the strange sight below, "but I have met demons, and you certainly look like one, and unless they're having a drink, they're certainly not friendly. Unless of course, you can explain yourself...?"

He has a magic gun? Where'd he purchase that?

In his entire life and undeath, Charles had been fortunate enough not to have had firearms pointed at him - a record that had evidently just ended. He could sense, too, that things were going far beyond what he'd originally expected - the emanations from the white-suited stranger's weapon were characteristic of enchantment, and he didn't want to test the limits of his phylactery just yet. Still, at least these intruders were willing to negotiate...

"Before you do anything foolish, let me just inform you that you're pointing your weapon at a registered healer and senior member of the Academy's Natural and Medical Arts department, undead status notwithstanding. And, as mentioned to that young man earlier - " He gestured at the boy who he'd caught eavesdropping on the stairs, "- I have every right to be on the premises, and I doubt you can say the same. I would strongly recommend not getting into a fight, unless you want to bring the campus guards down on your heads - and by that, I mean a sizeable portion of the Council's security forces. Even if you could take them all on, from the looks of things, I don't think you want to make a scene."

He glared up, meeting the man's gaze with blue flame - yet he kept hoping that the intruder wouldn't attempt anything dangerous. "Now, shall we negotiate like gentlemen, or do you insist on keeping that gun pointed at me?"

Raymond continued to keep his target at gunpoint for several seconds more, all the while pondering in his head just what to do. But eventually, after thinking it through, Raymond once more spoke.

"Let me say this; I still do not trust you at all. But I've also seen stranger things in my time then a skeleton possessing a day job. And, I still have a lost member of our little group that we need to find. So, if you're willing to explain how you are not a demon, if indeed that's not what you are, then I'm willing to put away the weapon after you've done so. And perhaps, even divulge what we're doing here, though that will depend on what you say first."

Charles's patience was wearing thin, no thanks to the perceived arrogance of the eye-patched gunman. Still, he decided to play along for now - at least, until he could safely call for help.

"Get your terminology right," he snapped. "Demons are beings from Hell, and I do not appreciate being lumped in with them." He fingered the small cross around his neck subconsciously. "I'm a lich, although certainly not by choice. Now pay attention: this is what happens when you get killed in an explosion in the Great Library - which may well be our fates if you should choose to start a firefight on the premises, and I have no intention of going through that again." Okay, maybe that wasn't the right choice of words. "Sorry, that wasn't meant to be a threat. But as you can tell, with so much magical energy stored within these books, you can imagine what would happen if anything - say, a stray shot from a magic gun - caused it to be released. So tread with care, because it's your move."

In a world where werewolves, griffins, and magicians of all types exist, this man decides not to believe in the undead despite the fact that we have a local necromancer. Great. Besides, Dungeons And Dragons? Hasn't he heard of Koschei the Deathless? Charles was feeling more and more offended by the minute, but decided to keep the matter to himself. He didn't want people going for the phylactery.

"Dr Charles McCoy. And first you speak of murderers, then about that meteor strike from just now... While I'll admit that the Council's presence in the Academy certainly hurts our standing among conspiracy theorists, you'd better have a good explanation in mind if you're going to make these allegations. Also, you'd better get that friend of yours back. I don't want to be held responsible if he triggers some of the less benign security features on campus."

Raymond was originally going to search for his 'friend himself', but now felt that if he was going to make his case to the 'lich', it would have to be now, or never.

"Mathew," said Raymond to the group without averting his gaze from his target, 'or Rossete, Kenneth, whichever, please see if you can go find our wandering friend while I negotiate with our new friend here, thank you.

"Now..." Raymond continued, "I am going to tell you something, or something's, that are, or at least should be, rather important, and I am going to expect you to listen. First off..." and so it went; as Raymond continued to speak to the 'lich', he told him of the third party he worked for, (without divulging the name of said third party, of course,) the academy's theft of the mysterious stone the three missing persons from the Academy, the scholar from the Academy he spoke to to confirm this information, of yet another missing person from the Academy, and in this case, specifically having been taken if the reports were true, and finally word that a 'Council' was pulling the strings. He also told him of Nick's ominous, forbidding feeling that he felt about the stone.

"Now," Raymond continued, "you're obviously not the kind of individual who would take stock in what are surely mere unfounded rumors, but also remember that part of this comes straight from the horse's mouth; I did in fact speak to a member of this Academy, as I said, and all three of the first people I spoke of are, for sure, either missing, or even in Faust's case, completely shrouded in mystery. And doesn't it make you wonder why they would snatch that stone away without clearing it away with whatever passes for government on this island? And don't even think that they did; I listened in to some of the civilians on the way to this Academy, and they said that the Academy snatched it up as soon as they could."

"Now, what we want to do is get the stone away from the Academy, but there's no time to do so through legal means." That last part about 'legal means' was of course a bold-faced lie, but he didn't need to know that. "Unfortunately, the stone is most likely locked away in the Restricted Section, which is, of course, restricted. However, if you were willing to, say, help us a bit, perhaps we could obtain what we are looking for..."

Lukos had gone down many curves and twists, and a few stairs, and eventually found himself back at the lobby, faced with the provoking restricted door that Rosette had faced. He stared intently at it... the relic stone thing was certainly behind it, and getting there was just a foot away. He then stared at his smoothie, and it's lingering scent of blood... temptation was very near...

"No no.. can't do that..." he said, shaking his head. He paused and started to think on his options on what to do...

"Throw the smoothie... then use bracelet.... or don't throw smoothie and not use bracelet and find someone to open it forcibly for me... Hm..."

The young Lycan began to get so lost in thought, that he wouldn't notice if anyone, or anything, was approaching him.

"Your arrogance is getting on my nerves, frankly. Now let me consider."

Charles turned his back to the man in white and stared at the Great Library's beautifully-decorated roof, clenching his fist in an uncharacteristic display of frustration. It was hard to believe that a decade had passed since the new advent of magic...

He remembered, of course. Darren Cooper and Reginald Drake had been his heroes back in the day - they were practically the fathers of new magic, pioneers in this infant field. In fact, they were one of the reasons why he'd transferred to the Academy to continue his medical studies; surely the gathering of the brightest and the best in one place, under the tutelage of such giants, would produce miracles!

Of course, then the accident happened, and he'd lost the chance to meet with them forever.

Dr Cooper's disappearance remained a mystery. No-one knew what lay within the Southern Temple: some speculated that it held artefacts from the old age of magic, the time of myths. Others claimed it was a portal to a parallel universe. Even more whispered rumours of dark gods lying sleeping in the depths, sealed away until someone was fool enough to break the seal.

All those were simply whispers in the wind. But what had been confirmed was that prior to Dr Cooper's disappearance, the magical seals and barriers around the site alone formed one of the largest magic foci on the planet. And it had just vanished one day, and Dr Cooper went missing the next.

The search was called off after three months, the Missing Persons case left open. Naturally, the rumours then sprung up like wildfire: Dr Cooper had offended the Council and was buried in a mass grave; he'd gone to the Southern Temple to investigate the lowered barriers - or even lowered them himself - and had been lost within its depths; he'd got sick and tired of academic life and decided, "Screw This, I'm Outta Here!". Whatever the case was, he'd neglected to tell his best friend, Drake, his plans. And when the police had given up the search for Darren Cooper, Reginald organised his own search party and left the island of Laputa to find him.

It had been about seven - or was it eight? - years since, and the official statement was that Reginald Drake was still wandering in a far-off land searching futilely for his friend.

Now that both Cooper and Drake had gone, the Council had intervened and placed Dr Conner in the position of Academy Head. And since then, the Academy's originally-lenient rules had become stricter. Security was everywhere, and all members now were forced to carry visas. The Academy's west wing - the Enchantments department - had been appropriated for "government research". They'd even heard talk of suspicious men in suits tailing individuals who dissented against the Council's policies and spiriting them away to parts unknown.

And now Conner was gone too, ostensibly for his health, and the west wing had closed completely. The gunman's story held water.

As for Nicholas Faust... They'd crossed paths once. Charles had nothing complimentary to say about the man, but he had sworn not to discriminate against the mentally ill. Some said it was the result of a magical experiment gone wrong. Other less charitable people thought his parents had been incestuous demons from Hell. Still, the man was a first-class summoner, even if he'd become a little touched in the head. He'd left the Academy one fine day and was rumoured to be hiding in some slum district, away from the prying eyes of people. It was no great loss.

Charles turned his attention to current matters. The issue of the "shooting star" was problematic - meteor strikes were one thing, but to have an actual statue crash-land and be almost-instantly taken away by the Academy for analysis reeked of foul play. And if an artefact really gave out such a disturbing aura, it certainly wasn't anything good. There were too many unanswered questions at this point. It was definitely worth investigating... but not to the extent of breaking all the laws in the process.

"You're asking me to abet breaking and entering, theft, and God knows what else. You know I can't do th-"

The lights flickered again, and the room was suddenly plunged into darkness.

Rosette's body immediately tensed up once the laughter echoed around the whole library...

Whatever it was, that thing did not sound good.

The Darkness within her stirred and woke, sharing with her the sense of alarm caused by the flickering lights and the spectral laughter. She could feel it right now...ready to turn her hands into clawed paws, her legs into those of a cheetah, to cover her eyes, ears and nose to wipe away her weaker human sense and replace them with some of the best evolution had to offer.

HII HII HII HII!

Raymond at first thought about bringing up his gun again..., but no, that would come later. Reaching to the back of his head, he felt for his eyepatch, and, while still keeping his ears turned to any more signs of laughter, quickly pulled it right off his head.

In a seeming instant, the darkness was gone, replaced with a shade of light gray which encompassed everything except for Raymond and his companions, including the lich. But at least they could see through it. What this was, was a notable side effect of what he liked to call his 'Time-Stopper'. As the name of that particular ability implied, it stopped all time — aside from Raymond and those who he mentally concentrated on — for 15 seconds. As it did so however, it replaced all existing light and darkness with a shade of it's own; a shade of gray. What this meant, was that Raymond andhis companions could now see where, and what, the strange fiendish creature exactly was...

As time grayed out, a near solid black creature was caught in stasis. Its small form barely noticeable against the large features of the library. Its small body accented by long antennae-like ears. Sharp teeth stretched from cheek to cheek in a manic grin. A piece of paper was clenched in its sharps fingers. Just as the party was able to get a good look at their sudden assailant, time returned. The lights flicked on and all that was left was a slightly crumpled piece of paper.

'Cool'
As Lukos stepped aside, a young man stepped forward to look at the door. He looked fairly normal considering the city. White shirt, black jacket and jeans. Headphones on his head boomed to some odd tune.
He touched the door, the sygil flashing red as he did. His hand seemed to be thrust backward slightly. He tapped the door a little harder, and his hand knocked back with a little more force. He clenched his fist and punched the door. This time he was physically knocked back a few feet. He bounced on one heel trying to keep his balance.
'All right. I guess I should get serious.'
The man ran toward the door. As he did, his hand burst into flames. His fist impacted with the door, flames covered the structure as flesh came into contact with the sealing sygil. A loud crash denoted his impact on the opposite side of the lobby. He was half embedded in the wall, though he looked relatively uninjured.
