You won't be able to pretend the romance isn't there at all, no. Why would you want to?

...if you don’t love you’re dead, and if you do, they’ll kill you for it.

[up] Because I really don't like romance?

and I find it excruciatingly boring?

(it's the pretty much the only genre I dislike)

watch the film dammit before putting an opinion

This level of trolling is reasonable for Commander Obvious. What do you think of this, everyone?

[up] You don't watch films you're not interested in.

There has to be a reason for one to feel obliged to watch a film. Be it because you like the genre, the actors in it etc

I never once said that Casablanca wasn't a good film, it probably is, but is there any reason why a guy who dislikes romance would enjoy it?

My lecturer keeps trying to make me watch it, but I'm terrified that I'm going to dislike it and incur the wrath of everyone in the lecture hall.

I've seen enough films to know that I dislike romance without exception.

when did I complain about anything in the film? Other than saying that I personally steer clear of romance films most of the time

You know, I think this is enough derailing about Casablanca.

Let's take this to its own thread.

gingerninja, since apparently you'll apparently go into it like the kid from The Princess Bride, I think you've already answered your own question.

So, going back to Citizen Kane, i think i liked the parts about finding what "Rosebud" was better than the parts about Kane's life.

Also, does the "Citizen" in the title refer to him as the sole citizen of Xanadu?

(and has anyone made "Citizen Brown"?)

This movie really was that good. I was expecting "Oh, a black and white movie that everyone says is good, but has horrible pacing." It wasn't. It captured my attention, and I actually cared about what would happen to him.

I still wonder how anyone heard him say "Rosebud".

If I had a nickel for every film where Emma Stone falls off a balcony... I'd only have two nickels, but weird that there's two of them.

A while ago I finally watched movie.

I just found it to be a slightly above average movie, hardly deserving of the title of being the best film ever made. But like Madrugada said, it does seem like a seriously influential movie, camera angles, narrative techniques, and such.

God, Casablanca and the Godfather was MILLION times more fun than this.

I'm now going to announce the controversial statement that I personally like How Green Was My Valley much more than Citizen Kane. It has its cheesy moments but overall it's much more engaging than the movie it supposedly robbed the Oscar from.

I'm thinking about watching this, to say I've seen the whole thing and because I'm planning a story that prominently features it.

Looking for some stories?

The last words he said to anyone pubically was Rosebud. He had a breakdown and probably stopped talking to anyone between that and his death. This is just something I picked up while in class last year and we watched it.

Weren't there other statement he made publicly after his second divorce, as shown in the news reel? I recall one of them was that there'd be no WWII.

Those happened long before the breakdown when his second wife walked out on him.

I had the misfortune to see this overrated pile of crap yesterday in film class,I'm so sad I lost those two hours.

How the hell did anyone manage to care about that guy at the end? A biopic on Richard Nixon would be a more useful story about a man who loved himself and wanted everyone else to love him than this crap.

I find it most hilarious that Susan was supposed to be a bad singer, because except for one bit at the end,she was actually not that bad.

Also Leland was a pretty cool character.

Also not impressed with a many shots failing to hold for more than 5 seconds.

Actually, the butler overhears Kane say Rosebud, too, after Kane smashes his wife's room. But it is set up a bit messily, as there is no way the maid could reasonably have heard it.

Optimism is a duty.

I've always enjoyed Citizen Kane, though I can't say I see that it deserves the "Best Movie Ever Made" title (I really, really dislike labeling things as "the best" whatever of all time, or lists of the 10 Best whatevers). There are parts of it that I found slow, and, while I know it's naturalistic, I always found characters talking over each other to be distracting. Still, one thing that needs to be remembered is that this was the first film Welles ever directed; he was literally learning how to direct from note cards while he was making this movie. It's an astonishing film for somebody to have made while learning the craft of filmmaking.

For my money, I do like Casablanca and The Maltese Falcon considerably better.
