I never really read Raidah as a bad person until now. Given that she truly believes Sarah sabotaged her friend's life out of a petty insecurity about grades, the animosity towards Sarah always seemed reasonable to me. But yeah, this is some classist bullroar.

She was also pretty condescending to Dina, though she was considerably less awful than her one friend.

[up][up]Animosity is one thing. She went out of her way to bully Sarah. Who had an entirely reasonable explanation for her actions that Raidah refused to listen to.

Also, in basically every strip in which she appears where she isn't acting incredibly antagonistic towards Sarah, who would have much rather been left alone than getting stuck in some stupid vendetta thank you very much, she is acting painfully condescending towards someone.

I mean, holy crap, look at this. Setting aside the "Ditzy education major who thinks angels are real" (well, what the fug are you doing at the mosque every Friday, huh?), apparently she thinks that only she can live up to the high standards of Jacob's family, and that Jacob has no motivation other than pleasing that family. I think that speaks of some serious arrogance.

Also 50k is a good amount, but it's rarely the amount people brag about, at least in college, especially since that's an all time high.

Like Raidah's still being condescending, but Joyce being like "so high!!" is not exactly a correct response.

Plenty of people don't have faith but still find strength in their culture and traditions.

Maybe you'd be less disappointed if you stopped expecting things to be Carmen Sandiego movies.

I'm a single adult working full time in a city and I'm comfortable, and $50k is more than twice my income.

If I made 50K in US$, nearly three quarters of my income would be disposable. Like, I think it's fair to say that 50K is a lot in the grand scheme of things.

Heck, applying inflation to this 2010 study, 85K is the threshold in which pay rises don't translate to any increase in household life satisfaction. Which means if she marries anyone with an income above 35K, she'll have the premium financial security.

Moreover, these statistics shows that with that kind of income, no matter who she marries, assures that she'll be unquestionably middle class (Well, if she stays out of San Fran)

Aside from which... Well, I won’t blame anyone for picking a uni course that offers them the highest chance of a high income. Other things being equal, sure, more money is better than less money, and let’s not be priggish about that. And if they’re highly organised, I won’t be too surprised if they can quote me the sort of income they hope for on graduation.

But who the hell has expected income levels for subjects they aren’t studying memorised?

I've lived rental properties with $325 rent (one house split five ways, one two-bedroom addition split two ways), but in this city, the cheapest one-bedroom I could get was $735 by the third year and I'm now splitting a $1000 two-bedroom.

I hate my city so much. The cheapest place I found was one bedroom in a house going for $1200/month. On the plus side, the previous generation has mostly stopped yelling at my generation for still living with our parents because they've finally realized how stupidly expensive it is.

Anyway, one of the big problems with teacher salaries is that by pure numbers, they're paid a reasonable amount, so why are they complaining so much? But they work far more than the hours they are actually on the clock (well over sixty hours per week in the worst cases), and they spend every day corralling thirty plus children and then dealing with the parents when things go wrong. Toss in the fact that they're doing one of the most important jobs by looking after and teaching children, and they're clearly underpaid.

And while I'm sure Raidah has been preparing for this argument for a while, teachers are one of the go-to examples of the system screwing over the people it needs. Plenty of people have the "teachers make 50K a year" figure memorized.

And they get pretty much nothing from the schools for supplying and decorating their rooms.

The new tax reform even takes away their ability to deduct those expenses from their taxes.

Ah yes, I forgot about that. I graduated from high school right before schools started bragging about having iPads in the classrooms, so I don't know who pays for those, but even basic teaching supplies like spare pencils for the kids and markers for the whiteboard can add up pretty fast.

And of course part of the reason that teachers are targeted is so that right-wing politicians (like the people Joyce has been taught to follow) can hold up public schools as a failure and throw money at private schools, which have all sorts of fun exploitative policies or counter-factual lessons, depending on the school.

I think Jordan is somebody not appearing in the comic. Closeted sister is the one called as the blogger here I'd guess, but I can't remember the name at all.

IIRC the label on Jocelyn's closet says "Joshua" and not Jordan, so Jordan is someone else... and I don't exactly remember who.

If I made 50K in US$, nearly three quarters of my income would be disposable. Like, I think it's fair to say that 50K is a lot in the grand scheme of things.

ok so this makes the fallacious assumption that salaried jobs exist with the exact same lifestyle you are currently living. But that's... usually not true? Once you get leave poverty, things become more expensive, because you now are maintaining a normal life.

Let's assume Joyce lives somewhere similar to what see in the comic. She would need to own a car to drive to the school. She'd probably need to live in the district she teaches, or nearby, which, if it's a high enough salary, also means a high property value. So now she needs a house, a car, and also, she needs healthcare, because she is working in a hotbed of germs, but can't be sick often.

Furthermore teaching has insane hours, and a lot of teachers put their own money back into their job.

50k means something, yes. It's a safe salary. you can survive on it on most places. But joyce's "so much!" is not accurate.

Teacher salaries are TERRIBLE in the united states. Every teacher I know has financial struggles, even if they have a spouse (and that spouse is usually also a teacher).

Jorden is the black sheep of the family. We've seen their parents fight over how they pushed him away.

I feel like Radiah might be projecting a bit here. Sure SHE might feel like having a hero sybling would be pressure to marry well and live up to that prescient, but, I'm yet to see any indication that he actually feels that way?

Missionaries with cool cars being the best sort of missionaries seems like a strange comment, unless she is being sarcastic.

She's clearly being sarcastic. Though whether it's a mild "I don't care about that and it's funny that you do" type of sarcastic or a full "missionaries with cool cars are usually terrible missionaries" type of sarcastic is a bit harder to tell.
