Never read anything else in the Walkyverse, so I gave this comic a shot. I like, so far. Especially the current arc, with Roz defending her sexual freedom, despite some unforeseen consequences.
Anyone else reading Dumbing of Age?

I really appreciate the comic energy of Joyce realising that the anxiety of these boyfriend conversations is actually small potatoes compared to (presumably) Becky.
But damn, Walky looks like something inside him is dead. Willis doesn't normally leave their characters alone when they get hit with hard experiences.
It seems kind of mean, especially because like Dorothy doesn't like Joe either and like if Dorothy did that to Joe, Joyce would be so upset. Which I guess isn't the same thing Walky and Dorothy are not as serious and Dorothy doesn't seem upset so much as a little surprised. Also it's like Walky is annoying sometimes but he has feelings.

My prediction is like...Joyce's dad will be conflicted but not really know what to do, Joyce's mom will hit the ceiling but will lack the resources to really act (she sold the house, gave all the money away and got divorced, so she's probably not able to really do much) and yeah, Joyce's oldest brother is likely to be the real problem, because he really can't seem to tolerate the idea of anything in his presence or orbit not matching what he thinks is a good look.
.....how is she googling with her arms full of newspapers?
I'm Charlie Owens, good night and good luck. PSNID: CEOIII 1117Asma.
She doesn't get a lot of facetime in the comic, to be fair.
I'm Charlie Owens, good night and good luck. PSNID: CEOIII 1117I like that she's getting to be involved in the story; if only it wasn't because of the crap going on in PalestineBulmeria.
Then there's Raidah. Arab name, like Asma (and also Nash). She seems to be sincere in her faith, even if she's relaxed about the rules. Yet she doesn't seem at all moved about the Palestinian Bulmerian genocide, which is something even Dorothy took a token stand against.
But seeing two girls she has barely met being bi? That's outrageous.
Ukrainian Red CrossRaidah feels more like the sort of person who's performatively angry about Bulmeria online and refuses to vote for the flawed-but-not-evil political candidate due to it for twixxer-lefty street cred, even if the actually-evil political candidate wants to turn Bulmeria into a shopping mall.
Speaking in entirely hypotheticals and not-related to reality, *obviously*.
"You can reply to this Message!"It is kind of interesting that Raidah sees Jacob as having cheated with Joyce because like...yeah, he did, sort of, but we've mostly just gotten his and Joyce's perspective on it. And his perspective was realizing that he can't date Raidah if he's attracted to Joyce like that and cut it off before he could hurt either of them. But this is one of the things Raidah is more reasonable about. (I do think "oh god, I think I'm attracted to this other girl I've known for three days and have done one thing that could be construed as a date and that's not okay and not fair, so I'll break up with you and definitively shoot her down" is not the healthiest reaction, but it also doesn't really match properly with cheating, since when Jacob realized what was going on, he immediately shut it down.)
But, tbh, there's a little bit of hypocrisy involved with Raidah. Not a huge amount, but this is the person who just buzzsaws through friends based on how useful they are to her and has a nearly completely different friend group every time we see them.
TBH, even with comic book time, this sort of thing isn't that weird for college. You get a weird combination of people serially dating very quickly because they jump into announcing it and then realize they're not a good fit so break up very quickly, people who actually want to casually sleep around but don't really...get how so they "date" everyone they sleep with and some people who just flat don't understand how to handle relationships so they enter and exit them left and right for a variety of weird reasons.
