She was a moron. An imbecile. So that was two out of his four teammates that were idiots. Wouldn't it make sense to practice the usage of paranormal powers in a controlled environment? Was that too much to ask?

Stepping back from the dancing flames, Jay closed his eyes. He felt the tension flow out of his body. It was just another function that had been added on to his body, like breathing, or running, or fighting. He pictured, in his mind's eye, the motions of what he was going to do.

A steady, fast-moving stream of carbon dioxide, both depriving the flame of oxygen and eliminating the heat required to continue combustion. Breath in—

He ceased all thought. If he couldn't put faith in his body, he couldn't put faith in anything else, his mind included. And when his body moved, his mind stood still—he intrinsically knew how to do this, and thought would only interfere.

Exhale. A burst of air, far faster than should have been possible, rushed out of Jay's mouth and ran across the fire. Soon, it flickered, dimmed, and went out.

Jay turned towards Pencil. "We have a new rule. Practicing our powers happens outside."

As Mary cried on the ground, she subtly opens her phone, and deletes the message detailing her powers and target. Perfect, now I can claim to have no powers, and have no evidence against it...

The noises of the racetrack were muffled sufficiently by the door, but when Rosa opens it, Arzt drops the phone and scrambles away, hands over his ears. Too much too much too much too much fucking stop it

The door closes again, and he uncurls himself. Pacman died during the ordeal and Arzt puts the display to sleep.

So, how to play with electricity?

Going outside might work, since he now knows what to expect, but it looks chilly. Besides, what can he use out there? The organic matter in the room is not to be fucked up; they're supposed to be a team.

While he thinks about how to test the powers, sparks leap around his hands. Arzt watches them, amused. They tickle him. But try as he might, the electricity can't get any stronger. Disappointing.

The sparks stop jumping and Arzt yawns. That nap apparently didn't do much for him, so he wraps the sheets around himself and tries again.

It is relief when she sees him put out the fire, though his reaction afterward seems overreacting. This guy's so uptight you can feel the air cringe in his presence.

"You never open your mouth until you know what the shot is," she goes. "And I'm not gonna burn someone with these hands." Just thinking if someone were in her way of her flame makes her squint. The skin to calloused ashes. The pain. No way.

The ruined television now reeks of plastic nauseating smoke and the detritus of melted wire. (*crack!*)

Mary starts getting up, wiping tears away from her eyes, and "accidentally" slips, and falls back down.

He felt a sharp pain on his cranium, followed by the clatter of a pebble at his feet.

The Russian man looked up in the direction where it came from, and saw a girl sitting there. Late teens. Albino. Petite build. Caucasian. Lacy, intricate clothing. A collar. Her distinctive appearance only made himself look more forgettably average than he already was.

Inside his pocket, he slid his cellphone open and rapidly typed a message.

Martian: player sighted in private building. sending coordinats now.

He entered some numbers at his exact position, all without looking, then hit send. Now to wait, he thought.

Back at the villa, the message appeared on the screen, reflected back in his glasses. Just those two words were all he saw at first- 'player sighted'. Now, it would begin. He put his hands to the keyboard.

Teru: Understood. Notifying the others.

Pausing, he deliberated for a few moments, resting his hand on the keyboard. Ostensibly called 'Teru', he started typing to all of them except Martian.

Teru: A contestant has been sighted.

He paused.

Teru: Return to base now.

Just to 'Martian', he said,

Teru: Recon the exterior, but take care.

Now under the balcony, 'Martian' confirmed the order and went around to locate any entrances and other attributes that he could discern.

Ring watched the goings-on after having completely ignored Jay's request to cooperate. This was not born out of malice, or even suspicion. She simply did not feel she had anything worth telling.

But as Pencil begans to use her power, Ring seemed to take an interest in the other girl for the first time. It seemed the powers were real, then. How strange.

The other girl seems completely useless, though, she thought, giving Mary a glance full of badly-vieled contempt.

"Bathroom," she announced suddenly, standing and walking towards her stated goal.

He didn't give in. Redd thought, sitting straight up. The sunlight disappeared as some more clouds rolled in. Redd shivered. His arms needed some covering. Why did he wore a short-sleeved hoodie anyways? It wasn't practica, so he probably was aiming for cool when whoever organized the game knocked him out.

He shifted his thoughts. Best to not linger in the past and focus on the present and future.

Redd stood up, and gestured toward the door. "I'm going to check out what's out there. Once I come back, I'll knock four times."

He counted four cars zooming by. He lowered his arms and walked toward the balcony. "Or I can check out the what's out there while you geezers can talk amongst each others. You two lived longer. You'll probably find your memories quicker."

Notice the Reality Subtext in the last sentence.

"Thank you for the keys." said Dean. He was about to head off to get food, only to realize, once again being put into despair, that he was full.

Those monsters.

Dean had been beaten down by life far too much in the span of half an hour—as he thought that he also felt some sores in his back and shoulders. Exactly as if he had been beaten down. Yet another clue to his past, or simply a bad night? He assumed the first and headed towards the food, defiantly going to eat anyway. And who knows, maybe he'd notice someone else with a coll—MOTHERFUCKING SHITCOCKPISSASSES!!!

He tripped and faceplanted the floor, earbuds tumbling out with his piece of mind. He struggled up to a sitting position, rubbing his head clear of the ringing noise. He stood up and examined the bump on the floor that tripped him, bulging from under the tile. Was that someone else? Was he being targetted by a slapstick murderer right now?! He looked at it again. Dean felt some sort of... connection to the bump. He had raised it out of the ground. This was his power.

"Well... it's not that bad..." he mumbled to himself. He stood up and realized that no, food could wait. His teammates needed room keys. Dean popped in his earbuds and headed back to the room.

I kissed her, and she kissed me...

He was still smiling, but his tone was caustic.

"Son, this... 'geezer' is suggesting that you learn some diplomacy when speaking to your elders."

'Geezer'? Is it truly so arduous to show some diplomacy so that others don't contemplate beheading you instead of their target?

Jay almost choked on the smell. He considered asking Mary about her own powers but quickly discarded the thought. Children cried because they were helpless and needed protection. Adults cried when they felt weak, and he had a suspicion that in Mary's case weakness was a regularity.

"Calm down," he said to Mary, if only because her constant blubbering annoyed him. Ring was ignoring him. He felt his nails dig into his palm. Another wave of foul odor assaulted him, making him cough. His fights tightened into his hands, but he steeled his face into an expressionless mask. Stupid, useless girl.

And she wouldn't burn people, which just made more work for him. If he wanted her to live, he would have to trick her into fighting at first. He didn't even want to waste the time trying to convince her. She would taste the fear of death, and knowing that she could fight or she could die would be the best teacher.

Jay walked over to the sliding door and threw it open. Breathing fresh air, he stepped out onto the balcony. Below him, racecars zoomed along the track. Wind blew into his face.

Slowly, Jay turned his palms over, studying them. He placed his hand on his forearm, and felt the air brush over it. It was nothing substantial, weaker than the actual wind blowing against his face at the moment.

A racecar approached the area under the balcony. Jay's eyes tracked it coming down the road. He saw it passing under him two seconds before it actually did. And then—breathe in, breathe out. Calm.

It was like trying to lift a thousand-pound weight. The air generated by the car slipped out of his control, refusing to be tamed. Jay frowned.

So he would have to practice. Given that he sincerely doubted that the people running the game would let him buy a handgun, his powers and his wits were all he had. If he had an edge over the others, that would make all the difference.

Jay leaned against the handrail of the balcony, watching the cars go by.

Redd simply tilted his head to the side and grabbed the handle. He grinned. "I'll consider your advice then." He slid the door open and went outside.

Redd shivered as he walked onto the baloney. His tennis shoes clanked against the metal surface. He hung his arms over the rails, and ignored the chill the beams had. He needed to get some clothes more suitable to the climatic.

His hair rustled as a few cars roared by, igniting the crowd around the track. The baloney rattled from two forces. The surg in the air seized his attention. More cars went by, leaving aftereffects behind like swipes at canvas. He found the contrast in the area intriguing. Above was drab, below was lively. Inhaling, he took in the adrenaline that rose from the concrete like steam, giving his goosebumps a whole new purpose.

Maybe I should stay out for awhile. I have a whole day ahead of me. Redd leaned forward. He followed a girl his age with his eyes as she carried a hotdog to her place. Experiencing the small parts of life might jog up his memory.

He seems annoyed by me. He's hilarious when he's annoyed! Mary cries harder, "You didn't help me. You hate me!" She puts her face in her hands to hide the smile she was barely keeping from forming, "Why do you hate me!"

As she closed the door behind her, Ring smiled at her reflection in the mirror. Alone at last.

The collar ugly, she noted. She should get a scarf or something to cover it up.

Then, for the first time, she took the cell phone out of her pocket and read the text message inside. So that was her power. Interesting. Now to try it out…

A few moments later, the bathroom door swung open, and Ring, giggling loudly and stumbling around, came out. following close behind her was… another Ring. This one was still holding the cell phone in her hand, and was looking concerned, embarrassed and perhaps even a little panicked.

Nope, it's just not happening. Arzt stands up and stretches. Why the formal clothes, anyway? Leather shoes and everything. And everything except his shirt is brown. Even the frames of his glasses. What the fuck?

He announces, to no one in particular, that he's stepping out in the hallway.

Nice and empty. Arzt leans against the wall, keeping an eye on the doors. Great carpet, too. Clean, plush, a pretty pattern. The lighting is quite soft, which is to his liking. It makes things feel less surreal. Again, he must scratch under the collar.

If anyone comes out here and disturbs my peace, they might get a nasty... shock. He slaps himself for the terrible pun.

Where is she?

That was the question that haunted Alex Mandal day and night.

Ada...

She wasn't just the woman he'd fallen in love with.

She was the woman who'd taught him how.

And now he missed her more than anything. It had only been a year, but Romeo had had the right idea in that play.

"A thousand times, goodnight!"
"A thousand times worse, to want your light."

Back then, he'd been known as Prosecution.

Of course, I'm certain Gear had other names for me... He chuckled.

He adjusted his hat, focusing on the world around him.

He closed his eyes, shaking his head in annoyance. "Probably thinks he's invincible, too."

This was going to be a long fifty days. But he seemed to've gotten an 'in' with Tangent. This was good.

The kid might be amusing to play with later. He was safe, absolutely, if just for one day. What sad irony that would be if he had to kill his own teammate.

'Martian' had to wind through a few back areas, but found the door to the building where the team members resided. It was a solid, opaque door. No glass. He looked around, taking in every building around him, every possible hiding place, and continued around the building.

Jay heard screaming behind him. It was muffled by the screen door, but he could discern most of it. He closed his eyes for a moment. Remain calm. Anger will get me killed.

But still, even as he tried to bury his anger deep where he had hidden his identity, the sickly-sweet feeling of contempt filled his veins. He was disgusted by her, even though she had been put through hell. But hadn't the rest of them been put through the same? Without resolve, nothing could be accomplished.

As he watched the scene behind him, he saw Ring—two Rings—walk out of the bathroom. Jay shifted nervously. Something about two copies of the same person running about seemed perversely wrong.

Movement from the balcony below caught his attention. A tall man awkwardly ducked under the top of the balcony entrance, stepping outside. The man seemed intent on observing the people moving about below them.

The entire scenario was completely absurd. 16.67%. That was the magic number. 1-6-dot-6-7. The man's collar sat snug around his neck, branding him to the entire world.
