Anyone familiar with this? It's an early 80s fantasy concerning the dichotomy between fantasy and science. For kids! This was a mainstay of my childhood, despite being born about seven years after its initial release.

Also, have a themesong:

Absolutely, one of the best fantasy films of the 80s despite being made for TV. It was just recently released on DVD as part of the Warner Bros. archive collection, but unfortunately it doesn't have any extras whatsoever. In fact the DVD doesn't even have a menu. Talk about cheap.

As for the theme of fantasy versus science, I prefer movies that explore this dichotomy with a little more depth (like Ralph Bakshi's Wizards,) but it's still poignant for a cartoon aimed at children.

I always did like this movie. Especially all the cool different designs for the sorcerers. In fact, it always kind of saddened me that the others (like the sea one) didn't get bigger roles, because they looked so cool...

I think a remake would be interesting. You'd have to change a fair bit, given how perspective on fantasy has also changed, but it'd be fun.

I believe at least part of this movie is based on the book The Dragon and the George.

I remember watching it as a kid, it was one of the few fantasy movies out there at the time. This movie along with the Lord of the Rings animated movie were my favorites as a child.

One thing I must say... the cover art for the US DVD release is... HORRID! Does no justice to the movie within... colors way too bright and the characters way too happy.. makes it look like Disney made it or somethin :P

^^ In terms of providing discussion on the fantasy/science dichotomy. In Flight Of Dragons as it stands, we don't really get a conclusion to that theme. We get character conclusions and we get plot conclusion, but we don't see the duality element play out for the main character.
