I'm looking to write an article for one of the websites I work for about going to a viking metal concert. The problem is that I really don't know much about the subgenre (that's kind of the point of the article), and as such I'm not terribly familiar with the bands who play it.

My quick internet searches have mostly shown European bands, which are simply out of my price range. Basically, I need an American band to write about and go see, or at least a band that's playing in America sometime in the relatively near future. Can anyone recommend someone to me?

Some kind of festival would be even more fantastic!

What city do you live in/near?

Kansas City, though frankly, I'm willing to travel. Just... not to Europe. >_> I saw that Amon Amarth is finishing their US tour this weekend... Sadly, I didn't find that out until just now, and I can't afford to get out to the west coast at the drop of a hat.

just fyi Amon Amarth isn't Viking Metal, at least, not in musical style (lyrics is another matter of course)

It looks like the only Folk/Viking Metal bands touring the US this year are Enslaved and Vreid/Kampfar (Vreid not really being Viking Metal but being born of a Viking Metal band). Check to see if they come within a reasonable distance of you.

Enslaved will be in Chicago and St. Paul in early October... Those would be quite doable. I'll see if I can get it together.

Thanks a ton!

The US has a few viking-themed metal bands (knockoffs if you ask me, but whatever...). Check out Three Inches of Blood and Destroy Destroy Destroy.

There are snakes in the grass, so we'd better go hunting!
