First things first - I'm very new to the series, about halfway through the first book, so no spoilers please.

I noticed something about Hodor's name, I'd like to add it as a WMG, but I'm wondering whether it's been explained in the latter books. Does Martin explain why Hodor can only say "Hodor", which is not even his real name? Just say yes or no.

Ah-ha! Then I can add my little theory!

...once I figure out how to do just that. I'm new to Tv Tropes, in addition to ASOIAF.

Theories and speculation go here. Be warned, however, that much of the discussion on that page contains spoilers.

In the books (either the first or second) it's said that he is actually called Walder, but he started saying Hodor and everyone assumed that was his name.

I heard a "theory" that he's actually Aegon Targaryen, and getting his head smashed against the wall damaged his pituitary gland making him grow freakishly large and giving him brain damage. "Hodor" is derived from the last words he heard his mother shouting- "Hold the door".

The last hurrah? Nah, I'd do it again.

Did somebody call me?

I think that theory draws from the fact that Kristain Nairn has "Targaryean hair". Hodor in the books has dark brown hair so he's not Aegon.

I know it's a joke theory, but noting would only work for the tv series.

He'd still be a better king than Joffrey.

Personally, I think he's the son of Old Nan and Dunk the Tall

Far too young to be the son, but he is known to be of Old Nan's blood. Probably her grandson or great grandson.
