They said just about everything they could to say 'he's dead' without actually flat out coming out and saying "He's Dead".

But it is good to know he hasn't actually quite yet kicked the bucket.

Major plot twist of the week - Splinter uses issue #50 to kill Shredder, and how does Karai respond?

By going on a mission to find herself or some spiritual thing like that.

But that's not the big twist. The major twist here is what she does before she leaves - she gives Splinter command of the Foot Clan.

So right now, we have a Master Splinter and Ninja Turtles who now basically command the Foot Clan.

Yeah. Let that sink in for a moment.

Wow.

I think I'm freaking out a little over how it's probably even a bigger deal than I first imagined first reading through the issue.

Didn't Kitsune mind link with Alopex about something? Five bucks she's going to use Alopex in some plot.

It's going to suck for her and Raphsad

Oh hey, I didn't know we had a thread for this.

I was about a good decade short of the TMNT and Transformers heyday but for some reason they became my favourite comic properties.

GO GO...NINJA TURTLES?!

Wait, what?!

You read that right.

The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are teaming up with BOOM Studios' Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers!

This is actually funny when you realize it's not the first time Rangers and Turtles met...

[up]Hopefully it goes better than the last one. Then again, the Turtles crossovers so far haven’t been bad yet, and I really enjoyed the Justice League/Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers comic Boom put out.

Didn't know where else to post this, but the first issue of The Last Ronin is out now.

Takeaways:

  • It's the far-flung future.
  • Karai got herself a bastard child named Oroku Hiroto, who supposedly wiped out all mutants ten years prior. Moreover, Karai herself is in some kind of cryostasis tube or something.
  • April and Casey also have a daughter, who takes more from her dad.
  • The eponymous Last Ronin has three other Turtles conversing with him, but I guess it's more than obvious that they're just in his head.
  • The comic makes a really good job in keeping it ambiguous who the Last Ronin is until the last page.
  • Not only does the last page reveal that April's alive, but it also tells us who the Last Ronin actually is.
  • The Last Ronin is in fact...................................Michelangelo.

Thoughts regarding that last bullet point: The back of my mind had a feeling it'd be Mikey. Like, he was probably my first or second guess. Some comments I read say he should have been revealed in like the last issue or maybe the middle, and they're not exactly wrong. Saving the reveal for the middle or the end probably would've given the series more intrigue and have space for foreshadowing, but maybe the still-ongoing pandemic made them think "screw it, we don't know if this is gonna get finished, let's just blurt it out lest it gets canned or something." That aside, I still want to see where this goes. I don't think we ever got a scenario where Mikey is the Last Turtle.

Premise seems similar to one of my favorite episodes from the 03 series so it maybe worth a look.

In case anyone still cares, here is some artwork the people behind IDW TMNT are teasing. Mirage fans might find it interesting.

Please provide context. Context is your friend.

Regardless, context for [up]:

It looks like 2022 will see the return of the Rat King as he establishes something he's calling "The Armageddon Game"!

Woof. Rat King is looking super Nosferatu-y here. Very creepy.

So, uh.

Venus de Milo is back. Apparently she's got a dragon scale implanted into her shell, and looking at art from the replies, she's also sorta got a Frankenstein's Monster thing going on.

I anticipate trauma.

But hopefully she's way better than she was in her debut in The Next Mutation. She hasn't been seen since according to the TMNT wiki, so...

I'm imagining a Foot Clan-engineered turtle, perhaps to replace Alopex?

Okay, so, Sophie Campbell posted some concept art of Venus: https://twitter.com/TMNT/status/1509255157879554052/photo/1

There's also this picture, which some have said is art for Venus as a human: https://twitter.com/mooncalfe1/status/1507181300020621313/photo/1

I don't know if that last one is true. If it is, then it seems like Sophie feels the need to have all the female characters look a certain way. In other words, punkish, chubby, and not conventionally feminine. Granted, I haven't been reading all the issues lately, but from what I've seen that does seem to be the case. It seems like a case of author appeal.

For the record, I don't have a problem with some women looking like that in the books. It has its appeal. But, in reality, many women don't look like that, nor want to. It would be nice if there could be a little more variety in the designs. Maybe even have a woman that looks conventionally feminine for a change.

She doesn't even look chubby.

But huh, Venus as some kind of...Frankenstein's monster thing?

[up][up] ...Do you have any idea how many people have said the exact same thing about that "conventionally feminine" figure? And now we have someone who (it seems) tries to avoid that, and you want it back?

I see what you're doing here, writers; Venus got complaints back in the day for being named after a work of art instead of an artist, and the new version of Venus is literally constructed by someone else.

Is the adult TMNT fandom dying at this point? This thread rarely gets updated, and I don't see TMNT getting talked about many other places. The only place that I found that regularly talks about TMNT is a forum called "Technodrome". Although, it seems like most of the posters there are the alt-right 4chan type, unfortunately. If that's what is left of adult TMNT fans, then maybe its for the best that this becomes a franchise strictly for kids.

That being said, the kids stuff is apparently not doing so well at this point either. The Last Ronin comic apparently sold well (for a TMNT book) so there's that. There might be some interest still, but I wonder if its just from the aforementioned 4chan types. This site doesn't seem to have that, which is good. Ironically, the IDW comics are apparently going after the tumbler crowd these days, which is the antitheses of the other group.

I know this post is meta. But it just seemed like there wasn't a lot of interest in the IDW comics here. Or anywhere.

I know, I just recently got into TMNT, but when I came here to talk about it, nobody was interested.

...although according to my local comic book shop, new issues of the turtles routinly sell out very quickly, so apparently there is a fanbase, it's just not that vocal.

So, They've started the Armageddon Game story, which is apparently going to be separate from the main IDW series, but still connected. Tom Waltz is writing Armageddon Game, while Sophie Campbell will continue to write the main series. Here is a preview:

https://bleedingcool.com/comics/tmnt-the-armageddon-game-opening-moves-1-preview-try-again/

What do people think? Do most people prefer Waltz's writing or Campbell? They do seem to have a different tone and style.

Something else I wanted to mention is Jennika. What do people think of Jennika at this point? Personally, I liked Jennika as a human, and even liked her relationship with Casey Jones. I thought it was refreshing after so many years of Casey and April always being a couple, and I was hoping the relationship would work. I was willing to give Turtle Jennika a chance, but I don't think I really like the character.

Turtle Jennika almost feels like a different character from human Jennika. Human Jennika was stoic, reserved, serious minded, but also kind of shy and feminine when with Casey. Turtle Jennika is outspoken, a punk/metal head (something we were given no indication of before), as well as more snarky/quirky. Turtle Jennika almost feels like an author avatar for Campbell.

I also noticed that Jennika seems to have stolen/overtaken aspects from several other female characters. Like, the fact that they decided to make yellow Jennika's signature color. Yellow is traditionally April's signature color. I know April isn't a turtle, but still. She's had that color associated with her for many years now, across various series and movies. Jennika also stole Venus' spot as the fifth turtle/female turtle. I know they introduced Venus in IDW, but she obviously can't play that same role because of Jennika. You could even argue that Jennika stole Alopex's place in a way, since she was treated as a female mutant ally who would fight with the turtles. And that's not even mentioning replacing the original human version of Jennika (its hard for me to think of them as the same character).

Anyway, that's just my opinion. This post was longer than intended. Any other viewpoints?

I at least appreciate Rat King will be a main villain for once. Don't think he's ever gotten that before.

I got into TMNT later, with the introduction of Jennika as a turtle, and I quite liked what I read. I like her position on the team as the Cool Big Sis, and I liked her second solo series as she tries to make up for her past.

Jenny the human, I really don't have an opinion on, since I haven't read those issues, but Jenny the turtle? Really like her, and hope that she'll show up in future adaptations.

Also, Jennika "stealing" seems a bit harsh — April's associated with yellow in some continuities, but isn't in others. The original Venus De Milo was an obscure character from a shitty live action series hardly anyone saw, let alone liked, and the only thing she has in common with Jennika is being female and the fifth turtle. Hell, the new cannon Venus De Milo also has nothing in common with the original character, so she was never going to play that same role anyway (which is good, because her role in the show sucked).

And Jen taking Alopex's place makes no sense to me. I mean, Al is still there. She's still a major character, she still fights alongside the turtles, and she still has her own unique relationship with them. Nothing about her place with them has been taken in any way. The only way that argument makes sense is if there can't possibly be more than one female mutant fighting on the turtles' side.

As for Waltz and Campbell — to be personally honest, I didn't notice much of a difference. I got back into the comics from the "city at war" storyline, and continued from there. I didn't realize the comic even had changed writers until I looked at the writer credit.
