I think each pair of letters goes nicely, but the whole thing doesn't work.
I think the problem is that so many names have already been taken. If superheros suddenly started appearing now they wouldn't have a problem taking names like the Defenders or the Champions, little known comic books be damned. I mean if a Dr Manhatten situation really happened what's to stop the person from just calling themselves Superman?

Doctor Who already has the United Nations International Task Force.
How about UN Force?

Let's make a TCG!Perhaps all of this has been said already, as I confess to not fully reading every response, but here are my thoughts to the original post:
I think it would be cool if the characters' culture was shown more from their personalities, beliefs, ideals, etc. rather than their powers or costumes. That is, they don't each need to be a "Captain [Insert Home Country]" type of character with a costume that resembles their national flag and powers that somehow relate to their home country. Just give them powers that would be cool for a character regardless of their nationalities.
Unless the story is that each country's government or military created a single super-powered super soldier to be their country's national representative on a global super team, in which case it may make sense for their look and powers to be highly patriotic.
But if these were everyday folks who had already obtained powers somehow, had been fighting crime or whatever on their own at first, are not the only super-powered individuals in their countries, and were later recruited to join a global team, it seems silly to think that all of them would coincidentally have themes related to their countries. So I would avoid, for example a Japanese hero who is a samurai/ninja/sentai hero/sumo wrestler/geisha-themed character, a Chinese character who is a martial artist kung fu monk/Hong Kong movie star, or an Australian crocodile hunter from the Outback wielding a giant boomerang, a Canadian with a hockey themed outfit who wields a hockey stick and puck, or other such national stereotypes.
Back after the stupid Hurricane Irene knocked my computer out for two weeks. >_<
I like World Champions as the best team name so far (and a quick Google search didn't find any superhero team named that). Also I like "Atlas Island" as their base.
@Otakuma: That's exactly what I meant by saying that I want to avoid stereotypes. I'd rather have a team with hero types *as invented in those countries* rather than always using the American model. For Example, a Superman Expy for the US, a Masked Wrestler from Mexico (don't laugh, characters like El Santo were quite popular in their time), a Power Rangers/Kamen Rider type from Japan ...And maybe an athletic Blue Elf from Iceland.
Oh and a British good guy Mad Scientist ala Doctor Who (who is a superhero in my book.) It's the interaction between all these different styles that would make such a series truly interesting and not just "The Super Friends with Ethnic names."
Going back to the membership, the reason the UN Security Council nations would demand representation is that the only way they'd grant the team diplomatic immunity would be if they had people of their own in it to keep an eye on them. This isn't something given lightly. So, the USA, Russia, China, the United Kingdom and France would be regular members. Everybody else would be up to the team itself to determine however, probably by mutual consensus. I'd like to regularly have representatives of cultures such as a Hispanic, an African, an Arab and a Malaysian as well.

Outta curiosity, what kind of threats would a team like the World Champions face? Ok, acts of Terrorism and Natural Disasters are kind of a given, but what else? Aliens? Villainous Multinational Teams? If this is seen as derailing the thread, I do apologise.
Also, are we at any point going to create characters? Cause I got some pretty decent ideas.
Theres sex and death and human grime in monochrome for one thin dime and at least the trains all run on time but they dont go anywhere.Demon invasion, Eldritch Abomination, Angels, Gods, nuclear war, terrorism, giant monsters....
Evil multinational team is too obvious. Of your villains are going to be some big fancy "Anti-world order" than it feels like someone ran out of ideas. Terrorists, natural disasters, alien threats, ethnic cleansing, general protection of civilians in war zones, the occasional eldritch horror, kaiju, those sorts of things I imagine.
And in terms of making characters, I can easily provide various roles that would be necessary and proper to fill in an organization like this since I've already given this a lot of thought.

Ideally (and most superheroes are idealist, to some degree) they'd help with anything: supervillains are a given, as are disasters, but ancient gods, experiments run amok, etc. would be fitting and interesting as well. By that same token, when not to help would be an issue as well. There are some problems that can't be fixed by just blasting at it with superpowers; most real-world crime, for example (take down one drug kingpin and another just takes his/her place), poverty, and (specially) thorny social issues caused by Values Dissonance, like repression of women's rights. Heck, even the heroes would probably argue among themselves about who to help or fight! But that's precisely a good source of story conflict *if written right*
As for characters, sure, let's make some! I'd especially love to hear some good, original names, since I suck at coming up with those.

Ok, well I have an idea for a super hero from Japan who uses a series of advance suits of armour that range from Power Armour to Mini Mecha called Tetsujin #33 Special. If Japan is a constant presence within the team, he could serve as the team's chief technician, which could lead to some head-butting or playful rivalries with the team's scientist. Oh and he is in fact a she
Theres sex and death and human grime in monochrome for one thin dime and at least the trains all run on time but they dont go anywhere.Thoughts on sorts of positions that'd need filling in a massive scale multinational world team:
- Detectives
- Spies
- Therapists
- Acoustic Experts
- Magical Consultants
- Electrical/Energy Experts
- Botanical Experts
- Lead Engineer
- Personal Trainers
- Tactician/Strategist
- Human Walls
- General Fighters
- Physical Therapist
- Assassin
- Demolitions
- Lawyers
- Physicists
- Metahuman geneticists and biologists.
- Soldiers, like real ones before they joined.
- Pilots
Just to name a few

Cool list. My questions are.
Why would they need an acoustic expert?
Is the lack of plural for assassain intentional? It seems odd to have multiple botanists and only one assassain.
Do all of these roles need to be superpowered/ badass normal? I'd imagine the lawyers could be civilians, unless you intended for them to have something like extraordinary memory. But should the pilots be superpowered?
Am I a good man or a bad man?

Yeah, probably. Depending on the official name for "supers", that would probably be part of the name, i.e. International Paragon Intervention Force, or Ipif.
