So, I inspired myself to this suggestion/question through this post. First, some background: that conversation is one, started by Bobby, on how to improve the (I would think this is the primary issue) derail problems in OTC. So, I thought, if the conversation is limited only by the OP, why can't the OP just go back and edit his/her first post, so as to widen the discussion?

Then I realized, yeah, they can do that, but the title will be the same. So, I was wondering, would a possible idea be to allow the OP to change the title to widen discussion, rather than flooding the board with somewhat-related but still off-topic enough to warrant it threads?

I thought of it as pros/cons:

Pros:

  • A slight derail can be covered by an edit to the OP and title.
  • Mods will save time because people won't have to holler to get it changed.
  • Initially narrow topics can be widened easily by the OP if they realize they didn't allow for discussion of a bigger, connected-yet-off-topic idea.

Cons:

  • Could be abused by the OP to narrow the discussion, preventing what would originally have been a valid counterargument from working by artificially making it off-topic.
  • Would be a possible troll tool.
  • Is giving what is generally only a mod power to the general troper populace.

Ideas to Limit Cons:

  • Create a limit on how much it can be done; i.e. "you can only change the title once, make it count."
  • Limit its use by new accounts.
  • Obviously, allow mods to change the titles as they will; make a mod-change unchangeable by the OP—i.e. "the mod's word is law."

What do you think?

If the title is the problem just holler and ask for a title change. Giving the mods what you want it changed to would be excellent, so we don't have to try to guess. And anyone can already do that, not just the OP. And it really doesn't take long to change a title if we know what to change it to.

Good thought though. Worth asking about.
