Like I said, YMMV. Simply because in a general context, there is no Best Genre or Standard Genre hence, there is no such thing as a detractor.
Here's how I choose genre's for stories I write: I first choose a Main Genre, then three sub-genre. I make sure that the three sub-genre compliments and supports the Main Genre, being careful NOT to create a genre shift.
Example: Harem Genre Main Adventure, Shounen, Fantasy Sub Genre.
A hero goes on a quest with a girl. The girl has her reasons to join the quest but most of all because she loves the guy. The journey goes far, and every time one more girl gets added to the story, who joins the quest because they like the guy. Eventually the big bad is defeated as the people who joined the quest numbered to an incredible 100 girls. They eventually settled on the island where the former big bad made his turning it into a city. People returned there, many who are the girls' families soon turning the island into a small country, with females outnumbering males 1 to 20.
And so it all starts from here...
P.S. the hero wasn't a pervert... and yet rumor has it he fathered one child for each girl in his harem. The hero of my main story is one of the heroes descendants. I kinda crossed Infinite Stratos to Etrian Oddyssey from here on.

...a little brother should belong to his older sister, right? - Orimura Chifuyu

Anyone who dislikes any genre, can always rely on that "pure genre" argument, basically strawmanning the whole genre into it's lowest common denominator, and claiming that anything more stops being that genre.
For example the Sci-Fi Ghetto proponents will always claim that the few sci-fis they love, like Dune or Nineteen Eighty Four, are "more than just pure sci-fi", because "they don't focus on the technology, instead they also have serious themes", while, of course, "pure sci-fi would be about nothing more than Technology Porn".
Or someone who dislikes soap operas, can also always explain that his favorite soap opera is actually a drama/comedy, because, "you see, actual soap operas are always so bland, but this one has some heartwrenching/hilarious moments, so it is more than that".
Anyone who tries to claim anything like that about Harem Genre, is just plain wrong, and can be easily spotted as a detractor.
