non-answer #1 - video game background music is usually simple and would be a great beginning to learning music by ear. try some transcribing to sharpen up your overall musicianship

i'm pretty sure there are about 1,000,000 freeware things that can open up .midi files into scores that you can work with and one of those entries has to be at least close to correct
