Removing Gushing from the Wiki

Go To

So. Personal opinions on the main wiki aren't allowed, be they gushing or bashing. Now, bashing gets tolerated even less than gushing, and that makes sense; it leads to more flamewars.

But that doesn't mean we have to live with all the gushing either. This thread can serve as a center for keeping it in check. One function might be to alert people to pages that are really heavy in gushing, to the point that it's not just a quick fix and will need some assistance.

The You Can Play This! subpages are also pretty gushy at parts, and the YMMV page is almost nothing but Harsher in Hindsight.

Literature/Paprika has a lot of gushing mixed with ZC Es. (Also we should probably change it to Anime/Paprika since most of it covers the anime.

"Dysfunction Junction: Done very well. The characters may act like normal people, but if you think about it, they've all had problems, ranging from prior depression to split personalities to completely delusional."

" Meaningful Background Event: Done exceptionally well in a later scene, serving as a sign that everything isn't over yet."

" Voice of the Legion: If you're thinking, "Why has 'so many people saying the same thing at once' never sounded so scary before?", that's because in Paprika, they use the same pitch changes and speak at EXACTLY the same time, creating an effect that's pretty unnerving."

AndTheFandomRejoiced. My Little Pony Friendship Is Magic needs some major cleaning. Most of the examples don't have any explanation about why the fandom rejoiced, and all the emphasis and exclamation points make the page hard to read.

This is the sort of page that really does need some kind of sourcing. How do you prove that the fandom really reacted in this or that way? YMMV tropes have this problem in general, I think.

Analysis. The Big Bang Theory is really gushy about the show's (apparently) deep characterization, and even the DethroningMoment. The Big Bang Theory page has a gushy part in the intro.

"Having broken out of the gate in the year 2007, The Big Bang Theory took the average normal sitcom idea and completely turned it on its head, becoming one of the best Warner Bros. Television shows of all time. But for a show named after the event that created the universe, there are bound to be some really bad moments that make you wonder what the hell the production crew were thinking."

Okay this is a big one.

Pretty much every single popular long running Shōnen anime and manga that ran in the past few years (One Piece, Naruto, Bleach, Fairy Tail, MyHeroAcademia, DragonBallSuper, and probably a few others that I missed) have massively and obviously bloated CMoA, Heartwarming, Tearjerker, Funny, and sometimes even Nightmare Fuel pages. These are inherently going to be lengthy due to the nature of their source material, but there's a limit.

It's reached a point where people are practically just listing every single story beat that happens on a chapter-to-chapter or episode-to-episode basis without any standards about whether or not the general fanbase or viewbase actually thinks these moments are cool/sad/heartwarming/funny/scary. Dragon Ball Super's 5th episode for example, was so poorly received that it became a meme, but someone still wrote an entry about how "awesome" it was. And even without moments like that, they've clearly gotten so long that the genuinely well received moments are obscured by fluff.

We clearly need to make some cuts, along with stricter and clearer guidelines.

[up] I made a Moments cleanup project a while ago, but it got shot down. Awesome. My Hero Academia was actually one of the pages that inspired me to create the thread. Here are some examples I collected there that I think could be cut:

    My Hero not-so-awesome moments
  • While we're at it, Ochako herself also gained 45 "Rescue" Points. Whom did she save? Midoriya, who could have died by falling, and she managed just in time too, despite being trapped just moments earlier and also on the verge of making herself sick with her powers. It's also possible that not all 45 points came from stopping his fall. Some of them may have come from her trying to give her points away so that someone who deserves to pass would be able to.
This sounds a bit too speculative for my tastes
  • Iida's calming of all the students during an emergency evacuation. Bonus point because this inspires Midoriya to make him class president.
  • Tsuyu actually manages to guess that there's a relationship between All Might and Midoriya's quirk (and is perhaps the first to do so)... although Kirishima shoots the idea down.
  • The Villain Alliance's breaking into Yuuei with frightening ease.
  • Tsuyu saving Midoriya from the shark villain. The frog who stomped the shark.
Lacking in context. I don't feel that one-shotting a mook is awesome enough to qualify.
  • The students preparing to fight back against the more experienced Villain Alliance.
  • Midoriya finally manages to throw a punch without breaking his arm. Unfortunately, the one hit is Noumu, so the punch doesn't hurt him either.
'''This starts off OK then veers into explaining why it's not actually an example.
  • MANY heroes were impressed by Shinshou's quirk, making it clear that they had to go over similar obstacles. So there is hope for him yet.
This might work as a heartwarming moment, but not awesome.
  • Shoto Todoroki vs. Hanta Sero is pretty quick, but...
    • Despite knowing how outmatched he is, Sero has a pretty cool one-liner:
Sero: Well, I don't feel like I can win... [instantly wraps up Todoroki with his tape] ...but I don't feel like losing, either!
    • Sero then quickly tries to throw Todoroki out of bounds in a lightning-fast all-or-nothing gambit that demonstrates quick thinking and a good grasp on his best hope of winning... and then Todoroki freezes his bindings and Sero in place, creating a glacier twice as tall and half as long as the stadium.
Todoroki: Sorry, I went overboard. I was angry.
For this one, the part where Todoroki creates a gigantic ice wall could be kept, but Sero's defeat probably shouldn't.
This is just a short "filler" fight that pretty much no one talks about, and the first bullet point admits it. It definitely doesn't stand out compared to the other fights of the tournament.
  • Midoriya showed his ability to analyze quirks as he quickly noted down one of the contestant's quirks including its limitations and possible weaknesses. Doubles as a funny moment as he unintentionally implied that he could threaten anyone whose abilities he had analyzed, including Uraraka's.
  • Iida vs Todoroki:
    • Iida gets one manages to land a solid kick to Todoroki before rushing to drag him out of the arena.
    • Not to be outdone, Todoroki beats Iida by freezing his engines, showing that Todoroki knows how to use his powers effectively on the small scale and not just relying on the brute force behind them.
Just one kick isn't awesome enough to qualify. Once again, this is a short fight with no big flashy moments. I'd like to cut the whole thing, but at least the first part has to go.
  • Deku also shows foresight by quickly sending his location (without context) to his classmates via his phone while holding it behind his back. All his classmates who see it are smart enough to know that something's up, but Todoroki, the one who happened to be in the area, is able to use this information to come in and save both his classmates, and inform the other pros of what was going on.

There are plenty more, of course, so if we clean these up I'll come up with more examples.

[up]Agree with all of those moments. I'll take a stab at tearjerkers. This is just up until the end of the Hero Killer Arc for now. NOTE: I'm manga only

     Not a Tearjerker Academia
  • When little Midoriya first learned about his 'quirkless' existence, the child spent the night on watching videos of heroes on the web, crying, and he tried to say that maybe he could still be like them. His crying mother hugged him and kept saying "I'm sorry".
    • You can think that she was feeling pity to him, but if you look from another perspective, there is more to that. In Eastern countries (Japan and China in particular), when a child has some problems, the blame usually would fall on the mother. Being a quirkless person in this world is almost equal to being disabled, and Midoriya's mom didn't just pity him; she was also blaming herself for failing at being a good mother.
    • In hindsight, Izuku thinks that his mother didn't tell him the one thing he wanted to hear: encouragement that he could still follow his dream. And on that note, his father wasn't even around to offer any comfort. Why isn't he involved in his child's life when he really needs him instead of spending all his time abroad?
    • Main point is valid, but the first subpoint is reaching, and the second is speculative
  • Chapter 34: Todoroki is egged on by his father before his match to the point where he becomes enraged. His first attack ends up with his opponent and half the arena frozen. As Todoroki apologizes while thawing out his opponent, he's audibly ashamed for how angry his father makes him.
    • Reaching
  • You have to have some sympathy for Shinsou in chapter 33. His Brainwashing Quirk proved useless to him during the UA entrance exams, and he expect this to happen as well, so he applied for general studies and thereafter sought to get himself noticed through achievement in the hope of getting inducted into the Hero Studies classes. The explanation that plenty of strong and useful quirks can be overlooked by the entry exam makes you wonder how many kids have had their dreams crushed by the bad luck of not having something that can cause physical damage. A line from Aizawa, the super strict teacher prepared to expel any student he deemed too weak, even expresses sympathy in explaining how he's against the way the entry exam is structured for this very reason.
    • The fact it's a very unique and conditional type of Quirk that affects anything with an organic brain who can talk, so he was hosed in the entrance exams due to facing robots with Artificial Intelligence. This reveals that UA's exam was biased towards furthering the exploits of the physically strong and prodigiously talented - in other words, a slam dunk for Bakugou.
    • Chapter 34 makes it even worse, with flashbacks showing that classmates always assumed Shinsou would make a good villain before even thinking of him as a potential hero.
    • His quirk, unless he is using it in hero business, to capture criminals or interrogating suspects, has no legal uses. So, basically, being a hero is the only way that he can use his talent.
    • Main point is valid. First subpoint is redundant. Second subpoint is valid. Third subpoint is speculative
  • Chapter 37: Uraraka plays off her loss as no big deal in front of Deku, but when she is alone she breaks down crying while on the phone with her dad telling him she's sorry she didn't do better, so she could get scouted and start earning money. Falls into Heartwarming when her dad says he's nothing but proud and how Uraraka has more chances to show the world her stuff.
    • Uraraka coming back from the waiting room is sad to look at too. She's gone from the arena for a very long time as Recovery tries to work on her, and she can't have all her injuries healed at once or it will take a toll on her stamina. Bakugou left her in such a pitiable state that she couldn't even move, and just getting her back on her feet was an effort. She's left with several nicks, dings, and bruises she needed to have bandaged. She also needed to be supplied a new track jacket to replace her explosion-scorched one, and she's left it hanging open and unzipped, like she needs to cool off after the fight and isn't bothering to look composed anymore. She finally goes back to the stadium after crying very hard, because her eyes are almost completely swollen shut from the saline irritation. Her closest friends can tell that this is not the same cheerful Ochako they know and love- this is a badly shaken up Ochako trying her best not to worry everybody and pretending to be cheerful, in order to hide her shame.
    • Main point is valid. I don't remember the details clearly enough, but the subpoint sounds redundant and forced
  • Poor Momo looks so dejected after her loss. And in the much-desired full rendition of the fight in the anime, we learn why. Tokoyami was too fast for her to keep up with while her body needed time to produce equipment to battle him. It's even harder to witness her losing her composure as Tokoyami easily punches through her defenses and causes her to suffer a ring out before she even had a chance to put her plans to action. She walks away from the fight devastated and spends all the way until the end of the term feeling unsure of herself, worrying that she can't react to a threat right when the situation calls for it.
    • Was off-paneled in the manga. It don't know how the anime handled it, but this sounds like it's Harsher in Hindsight at best, and not sad in the moment
  • Chapter 39: Todoroki's mother used to be very loving and encouraging towards him, even going so far as to call Endeavor out on being brutal towards Todoroki when he was only five, before she snapped. After burning Todoroki, she was sent to a mental hospital. We then see where Todoroki truly started to hate his father by telling him it was his fault.
    • At one point a young Shouto watches his older siblings happily play outside, right before he is dragged away by his father for more training.
    • Okay, we need to combine all the Todoroki backstory stuff into one post. Because this was already mentioned
  • Chapter 40: All Might gets chewed out for causing Deku to strain himself so much that he can no longer be healed normally, requiring surgery. Midoriya, on the other hand, is on the verge of tears thinking he let All Might down by provoking Todoroki. Even after Recovery Girl's treatment, his hand is permanently disfigured, and has to return to the arena banged up and requiring months of recuperation in advance. Recovery Girl flat-out states she will not be catering to Izuku's self-destructive injuries anymore, so any damage he does to himself from here on out will be injuries he'll have to live with.
    • Might be valid, but sounds like a reach
  • Chapter 42: Iida learning from his mother that his brother was attacked. What makes it worse is that he didn't plan on talking to him until he won the tournament (which he didn't).
    • Shocking, but not sad. Also handled better in a later entry/scene
  • Chapter 43: Todoroki and Bakugou clash in the finals. Todoroki appears to trigger under the stress of everything up to that point, flashing back to the moment his mother scalded him, and stops fighting entirely, costing him the match, a victory that Bakugou finds hollow.
    • Making things worse? Bakugou would have won anyway. His Howitzer Impact's vacuum would have put out Todoroki's flames. He didn't get to prove he could beat Todoroki at full strength, and now he never will. No wonder he's so angry.
    • At the very least the subpoint is speculation and should be cut. Main point sound like a reach as well, but not as much as other things here
  • Todoroki visiting his mother for the first time since she burned him. She's recovered somewhat in the sanatorium, and tears up a little and apologizes for what she did. She also gives him this very bright-eyed look when he first enters that proves she's regained a lot of her sanity.
    • Heartwarming, not sad
  • Chapter 45: Todoroki's hero name is just his first name, and same with Iida's. Despite Iida's older brother passing the torch of his hero name to him due to being permanently crippled, Iida can't bring himself to do it. Likewise, Todoroki is still hung up over his issues even after visiting his mom, or possibly partly because of it, and doesn't know what he wants to call himself because he has no idea if he wants to use both sides of his Quirk freely yet.
    • There's a lot of dumb reaching here, but this just might be the worst yet
  • Chapter 58: Gran Torino brings up something very disheartening over the phone. All Might's predecessor, Shimura (later revealed to be a woman named Nana Shimura), was killed, and the culprit also left him with the catastrophic physical wounds that have crippled and emaciated his body. That culprit is All For One, All Might's old nemesis.
    • We learn that a dead person exists in someone's backstory. that's it.
  • Chapter 59: All Might tries to force himself to tell Deku that he won't be by Deku's side when he faces "All for One" and instead chickens out. It's killing him to lie to his protege about his short lifespan. Because we later learn that several years back, his former sidekick foretold his demise.
    • Also, Midoriya says to All Might that as long as he is there with him, he feels like he can do anything, which is immediately turned into a tear-jerker moment when we later learn that he might die.
    • All Might failing to say anything is a maybe, but all the stuff about Nighteye's prophecy comes way latter, and should be mentioned during those moments

Zuxtron Berserk Button: misusing Nightmare Fuel from Node 03 (On A Trope Odyssey)
#214: Jul 31st 2018 at 6:07:06 PM

[up] I agree with cleaning up all of these.

In general, having a page formatted as "Chapter ##: Something sad happens" encourages illegal indentation (first bullet point: "Chapter 1: This happens", sub-bullet: "Also, this happens afterwards") and "episodic" troping (where a sad/awesome/scary thing that happens over multiple chapters is split up into several smaller entries). Also, using the word "chapter" is pushing aside the anime, where the term "episode" is used instead and the numbers don't match up.

A while ago, NightmareFuel. My Hero Academia was as bad as these pages, and since I'm involved with the NF cleanup project, I just went ahead and cut all of the speculative/fridge examples, combined the episodic examples into a single point, and asked about the weak-sounding examples before cutting them outright. Then I added the page to my watchlist and since then I've been curating every new example that gets added to stop it from falling into disorder once again. Similar to what we're doing here.

Continued. School Trip, Hideout Raid, and Hero License arcs. This one has a lot more that I'm uncertain/undecided on.

     MHA non-tearjerkers
  • Chapter 70: Deku asks All Might if there were ever people he couldn't save. All Might responds that of course there are always people he can't help just because they aren't nearby, and he has to force himself to smile in spite of there being so many people he can't help. One of those people happened to be Nana Shimura.
    • This gets a "probably not" from me, although I could see it staying. But if it does stay, then the part about Nana Shimura should be cut since we didn't know about her at the time
  • Deku's mother appears in tears at the police station, horrified that a villain went after and nearly killed her son in public despite not even wearing a costume or being on official duty.
    • Not good enough
  • Kouta's entire situation is like this. He ended up losing both his parents, only to hear from other heroes how incredible they were for dying in the line of duty, and now lives with his aunt and her team of heroes who help train kids to be heroes. He's surrounded by people who's careers remind him of his painful loss.
    • Don't know. I think it isn't enough, but I can see it staying
  • The Smash Cut to Pixiebob after Magne dragged her over with her Magnetism and bashed her head with her magnetic bar. Tiger reacts with complete fury, angry over the fact Pixiebob is starting to worry about getting married and has been absolutely abuzz about wanting to hunt down a potential spouse. But now, Magne has marred her good looks and Tiger wants to avenge both her defeat and her pride.
    • Just sounds like typical shonen level violence. cut
  • Mustard managing to render several UA students unconscious with a swirling miasma of toxic gas and sending them into a wild panic.
    • Typical villain stuff. Easy cut.
  • Tokoyami desperately trying to surpress his Quirk during the nighttime, when it's at its zenith and impossible to control, only for Moonfish to slice off one of Shouji's tentacles and cause him to lose his mental resolve just long enough for Dark Shadow to spring forth and go berserk. All he can do when his friends get caught in its rampage is helplessly tell them to run or they'll be killed.
    • Suspenseful, but not sad. Cut
  • Chapter 76: Deku's fight against Muscular grows increasingly desperate and he considers doing a You Shall Not Pass! to buy time for Kouta to escape. But as their clash goes on, Izuku soon realizes he's losing out in power with both of his arms broken and begins apologizing to his mom and All Might for failing them with tears in his eyes as the threat of death looms closer and closer before he's finally smashed into the ground, barely conscious enough to hear Muscular say that he was going to kill Kouta next. We know he's going to live due to being the main protagonist and the series' Foregone Conclusion, but the fact that a 15-year-old has to deal with these kinds of thoughts, especially one who wanted to be a hero his entire life, is heartrending.
    • Basic suspense, and immediately after this the scene turns triumphant and heartwarming.
  • Chapter 82: The League of Villains manages to take Bakugou, much to Izuku's horror. Before he gets taken, Bakugou warns him to stop. Not with his usual arrogance and pride, but out of fear.
    • I remember Bakugou's reaction being ambiguous enough that people couldn't definitively agree on what he was feeling. Either way, sounds like a "not quite enough" moment to me
  • Chapter 83: The results of the fighting that took place; one of the Pussycats is in critical condition, and another is missing. Multiple students are in critical condition from injuries and poison, and the rest are not only divided on how they should handle what's just happened, but also completely defeated by it. Not helping is that Deku is torn between wanting to help rescue Bakugou, and knowing that it's something he should stay out of from experience.
    • Serious, but not sad
  • Chapter 84: Deku learns that if he keeps taking heavy damage to his arms he'll eventually lose the ability to use them.
    • Serious, but I don't remember this scene being played for emotion
  • Iida gives his reasons for why he doesn't want to go rushing off to save Bakugou. He's frustrated as the class president, but he's terrified of his classmates making the same mistake he did. He even specifically mentions that seeing Deku in the hospital reminded him of his brother.
    • Don't know. Leaning towards cut though.
  • Chapter 85: Izuku's mom asks if he's willing to drop out of Yuuei since she's horrified by how much he keeps damaging his body. Before, there's been a lot of concern over how Deku's health might be effected by his recklessness, but this puts into a new light the consequences of his actions.
    • Serious, but not sad
  • Chapter 88: Shiragaki was alone before meeting his "Sensei", who shaped his hatred of heroes and only sees him as a tool.
    • It gets worse as the following chapters make it clear that "Sensei" was basically like a father to him, and All For One raised him purely because he knew that raising the grandson of All Might's mentor would hurt him. He also says that he knew All Might would defeat Shigaraki in the U.A. invasion and still sent him anyway.
    • Worst of all, the origin of the hand continuously perched on his face- the one of his father- is explained. There is a flashback to where Shigaraki was sitting before a puddle of blood with nothing but a hand remaining. He may very well have discovered his Disintegration Quirk that day. And it happened in an alleyway, with him just sitting there, with no shoes on and his face already disfigured. Helpless doesn't even begin to describe his mental state after that.
      • Leaning towards cut, but I can see it staying. If it's kept, then it needs a rewrite though to remove speculation and overlap with latter entries
  • After rescuing his teammate, Tiger discovers Ragdoll has been stripped bare naked, put into a trance so she couldn't fight back, and had her Quirk stolen by All For One. It's almost like he stumbled upon a date rape victim. He cradles her very gingerly in his arms, showing no delight in her shame, because this is his own teammate, and it would be disgraceful to treat her with anything but protectiveness in her moment of need.
    • Sounds more suspenseful/serious than sad to me.
  • Chapter 96: Ragdoll doesn't take the loss of her Quirk very well. She's crying while her teammates try to comfort her. Heck, she's sobbing so badly all three of them are huddled around her in a Group Hug, and both Mandalay and Pixiebob are in tears as well, while Tiger is trying his best not to cry.
    • This one is hard. On one hand, it's really minor, on the other hand it actually did get to me a little on my first readthrough. Maybe keep?
  • Deku's mom is still afraid of her son getting hurt, to the point where she admits that she's started having thoughts where she wishes her son never got a Quirk.
    • Sounds like another short but effective moment. maybe keep?
  • And when you consider how often he's been targeted and hurt, you realize this is heavy on All Might as well because she makes valid points about his overall condition. Her teenage son has been told if he uses his arms like he has before then he will be permanently crippled.
    • A bit repetitive and redundant after the previous point. cut
  • Chapter 98: Despite their recovery (which is described in-story as "nothing less than miraculous"), it's stated that Jirou and Toohru will never fully recover from Mustard's poison and their bodies have been permanently weakened, casting their future as Heroes into serious doubt.
    • I legitimately forgot this happened it was so irrelevant. Easy cut
  • Chapter 99: Seeing Tsuyu cry because of what she said before about Deku, Kirishima, Todoroki, Iida, and Yaoyorozu going to rescue Bakugou. She had told the aforementioned three that their actions would mean breaking the rules and make them no different from villains. She realized that her words were too severe and to hear the others went through with it, she found herself feeling disappointed and she couldn't have fun talking with her classmate anymore. Thankfully, they forgive her.
    • Even worse in the anime, where we her voice, typically as unchanging as the girl's countenance, crack as she audibly struggles to hold back tears.
      • Sounds more like a heartwarming moment since they forgive/comfort her right after
  • Chapter 102: After he is saved by Deku from debris created from Bakugou's training and the latter yells at him to 'be careful', it finally hits All Might that he's become someone who needs protection rather than being a protector.
    • Not enough
  • Chapter 112: Inasa tried to befriend Todoroki at the Yuuei Entrance Exam, even trying to look past that he has his father's eyes. His face is crestfallen when Todoroki brushes him off.
    • Forced
  • Chapter 113: Neither Inasa or Todoroki passed the provisional license exam due to their bickering while facing off against Gang Orca causing more complications. Their expressions show that they realize why they didn't pass.
    • not sad

[up]

  • For chapter 70, I agree with keeping it except for the bit about Nana.
  • Kota's backstory could be kept.
  • Shigaraki's backstory could be kept if it was rewritten.
  • Ragdoll losing her Quirk and the aftermath should be kept, but condensed into a single point.
  • I remember there being a strong fandom reaction to Tsuyu crying, so I'd keep it.

For the rest, cut the one's you're leaning towards cutting and keep those you're leaning towards keeping.

Here are some more "awesome" moments from the same chapters as yours:

    More MHA not-so-awesome
  • Tokoyami and Tsuyu's teamwork in Chapter 61. Opting to flee when Ectoplasm comes at them the instant the exercise starts, they combine her ability to stick to walls and long tongue with his dark shadow to launch each other away.
    • Of special note is how they win - Tsuyu reacts within a split-second of seeing Ectoplasm's giant clone to snatch the detaining cuffs from Tokoyami with her tongue, so they can be given to Dark Shadow while the giant clone has her and Tokoyami trapped. Again, she came up with this strategy with less than a second to react. Recovery Girl had earlier given an assessment that Tsuyu had no clear weakness, and it's evident that wasn't an exaggeration.
    • At the end of the same chapter, All Might's demonstration of strength. With just the air pressure created from the shockwave of a single punch, he causes serious damage to a whole row of buildings.
This could be condensed into a single point if it's kept. That last bullet point is about a completely different thing from the previous, and for All Might, it's nothing special, so I'm thinking of cutting it outright.

  • Deku scaling the side of a sheer cliff by foot by using OfA to save Kouta. His phone ends up being destroyed, and that combined with everyone being scattered and dealing with the other villains means Midoriya has to take on the villain single-handedly.
  • Deku vs Muscular, especially in the Anime adaptation.
    • Deku being able to realize Kota was at his hideout after witnessing Pixie-Bob's assault shows how much his analytical skills help. This is what helps Deku manage to make it and rescue Kota at the last second.
    • Despite spending the first part getting thrown around like a ragdoll, Deku still manages to find the strength to attack Muscular after Kota tries to fight back
    • Villainous one for Muscular for predicting Midoriya would attack after that
    • However, despite this, Midoriya manages to get himself attached to Muscular, and manages his first ever 100% One for All smash. Then he catches Kota with his teeth after that flings him off.
    • Another villainous moment for Muscular for being able to tank that one.
    • The entire ending of the fight. After Muscular decides to seriously go after Midoriya, Midoriya decides to counter his attack with a smash, and buy time for Kota to escape. It's awesome enough that he manages to keep Muscular off.
    • Then, as Midoriya is about to be flattened, Kota uses his own quirk to distract Muscular, which gives Midoriya the opening he needs. With that opening, Midoriya goes beyond and unleashes a 1,000,000% Delaware Detroit Smash! This one cuts right through Muscular and sends him right into the nearby cliff. It's so awesome even Kota is inspired by Deku's heroism.note
Kota: Even though you don't know anything, why did you do so much? My... My hero!
This is literally a play-by-play recap of the whole fight. I think that the last point is a definite keeper, but the rest is probably unnecessary.
  • Aizawa-sensei completely avoiding the blast from Dabi and quickly taking him down, even if it turned out to just be a Quirk-based duplicate of him.
    • After mangling both his arms in the fight with the Water Hose murderer, what does Deku do immediately after the fight? He gets Kouta to safety, and then jumps back into the fray, shattering Spinner's weapon, and relaying important news for Mandalay to spread, doing all this just with the use of his legs.
That first point is just dodging an attack then beating a mook, nothing memorable. Second point could be kept, it is a pretty cool Big Damn Heroes moment.
  • Ochako gets to show off some of the martial arts she learned from Machine Gun Head.
  • Midoriya coming up with a spur-of-the-moment plan to make use of the abilities of everyone present in order to catch up to Mr. Compress before he could get away with Tokoyami and Bakugou, once again showing that his mind is his greatest strength.
Really? Coming up with the plan is the awesome thing about this, and not the actual plan itself? I do think that actually describing the execution of the rescue plan would make a fine example, but the fact that Midoriya came up with it doesn't.
  • Chapter 87 has a few.
    • Mount Lady getting another chance to show off her powers as she destroys the Noumu storehouse.
    • Kamui Woods successfully capturing the surprised villains with his powers.
Both of these are pretty minor examples. Not sure about them.
  • All For One giving life advice to his protege, just before calmly twirling around and clashing with All Might is one for the villains. It's not everyday you get a Villain Mentor fighting the strong, implacable Hero to buy time for the other villains to escape.
The fact that it's villains doing it makes it less awesome since we're not cheering for them to succeed.
  • An awesome (and creepy) moment occurs early, when All Might tries to reach Bakugou, only to be impaled by All For One's Combat Tentacles and flung into a building, while the villain perverts All Might's Catchphrase.
All Might: (to Bakugou) I'm coming for you!
All For One: I don't think so! Because I AM HERE!
  • While All-for-One could easily annihilate All Might whenever he wants, he holds back, relying on a psychological battle to try and destroy All Might's ego. What's worse is that it works. Several times.
  • All-for-One abuses All Might's need to defend innocent people, and forces him to take a direct blast from one of his many quirks. With this, All-for-One manages to succeed in stripping All Might of One For All, reverting him to his skinny, true form.
A bunch of additional villainous examples. We're not going "Wow, this is awesome" during these moments.
  • Chapter 101 has a few of the students expanding their abilities:
    • Midoriya coming up with a simple yet brilliant solution to ensuring that he doesn't permanently cripple his arms due to overuse of One For All. Start focusing on using his legs to execute kicking attacks, which helps him save All Might from a falling piece of rubble
    • Bakugou develops his Armor Piercer move, which allows him to focus his explosions into a narrow area for greater penetrating power.
    • Instead of just using his shadow for external attacks, Tokoyami learns to layer his shadow over his body to augment his own combat abilities.
    • It's revealed that in just the 4 months she's been enrolled at UA, Hatsumei has built countless prototype inventions.
These are just the heroes coming up with the moves. Maybe if they were actually using them, it would be a good example, but just the fact that they have special moves isn't awesome on its own. The last one is just a throwaway gag, so it's a definite cut for me.
  • Chapter 105: When battling against the Shiketsu High girl, Midoriya uses his analytical abilities to deduce that her quirk allows her to shapeshift after he witnesses her trying to pretend to be Uraraka.
    • The ability of Mei Hatsume's mech supports is shown to absorb the recoil from a strong kick and send that energy out as a second shockwave, instantaneously, it's like being kicked twice. It also protects Midoriya's legs from further recoil damage.
    • Camie's physical skills are impressive, especially considering she has a non offensive quirk. She hits Deku with a ball, is so fast he barely can keep up with her and she even manages to restrain him.
On top of being poorly indented, none of these are particularly awesome. First one is just Deku putting information together. Second is just describing Mei's invention. Third is just saying that heroes with non-offensive Quirks need to be physically fit to compensate, which was already established before.
  • Chapter 111: The second test challenges the examinees to work together with an intense rescue scenario, made even more chaotic when a group of heroes show up to play the role of attacking villains. Todoroki ends up butting heads with Inasa over the latter's resentment of Endeavor (and by extension, Todoroki himself). The combination of Todoroki's shaky emotions and Inasa's wind powers causes him to lose control of his flames and accidentally send them directly at Shindou, who's incapacitated nearby. Cue Midoriya showing up just in time to carry Shindou out of the way, before rounding on Todoroki and Inasa to give them what for.
  • Chapter 112: The chapter itself shares it's name with Midoriya's epic What the Hell, Hero? moment quoted above, and boils down to the effect of those words on Todoroki and Inasa. Specifically it causes them to realize how their selfish actions got them into trouble and leads to them combining their quirks to trap Gang Orca.
These two examples should be combined into one.
  • Chapter 113:
    • After spending the previous stage of the exam trying to eliminate each other, all the students join together in this chapter to defend the civilians and fight of Gang Orca's men. It's also shown that Bakugou, Kirishima, and Kaminari spent the entire stage focusing on saving civilians. Them saving the last batch of civilians is what actually ends the stage of the exam.
    • After the exam is over, Gang Orca admits that between the fire prison Todoroki and Inasa created, and Midoriya's surprise attack, he doesn't think he would have actually been able to continue the fight, even without a power-limiter.
First one happened offscreen, which diminishes its awesomeness. Second is more about Gang Orca's reaction to the attack, if it was rewritten to be about the attack itself it might qualify.
  • Chapter 114: The results of the exam: Even though Bakugou and Todoroki did not pass it was nice to see the rest of the class make the cut.
Not sure what to say about this one except that it sounds pretty weak, like the person adding it was desperate to have SOMETHING to add from that chapter.

[up] I've been thinking it over, and I think this moment shouldn't have been cut earlier

  • Iida's calming of all the students during an emergency evacuation. Bonus point because this inspires Midoriya to make him class president.
It might not be the flashiest thing ever, but it's still Iida's first real "moment" (or at least one of them) and where a lot of people started taking a liking to him.

I also decided to keep the final chapters of the School Trip arc since it's one of the few genuine Downer Endings in the series. Although they could probably use a rewrite. The Iida scene at the start of the Kamino arc is good too.

Anyway:

  • Keep/condense Tokoyami & Tsuyu vs Ectoplasm and cut the All Might part
  • Cut Deku showing up to fight Muscular, and the subpoint about Tetsu Tetsu staying to fight.
  • Keep Deku vs. Muscular, cut out the fluffy parts, highlight/emphasize the final clash.
  • Ehhhh I think we can keep the Aizawa/Dabi thing. The attack was fired point-blank at him when he dodged it. I think that's cool enough. Deku's Big Damn Heroes moment can be a stand alone point.
  • "Ochako gets to show off the martial arts she learned from Machine Gun Head to restrain Toga and rescue Tsuyu." There, I fixed it.
  • Add the rescue operation itself, with a sentence or two mentioning how Deku thought it up. Something like
    • "Midoriya comes up with a spur-of-the-moment plan to make use of the abilities of everyone present in order to catch up to Mr. Compress. [THE MOMENT ITSELF]"
  • I think both of the "Chapter 87" moments are good enough, but need to be elaborated on. How about something like:
    • Mount Lady gets another chance to show off how strong she can be by splitting a building open using a truck as a boot.
    • The Kamui Woods moment should be expanded to describe all of the Heroes showing up and restraining the Villain Alliance (I'm surprised that hasn't already been added).
  • I disagree about how villains (All-For-One) can't have awesome moments. That's why Evil Is Cool and Rooting for the Empire exist. That being said, most of these moments don't seem like valid examples except for the ones about how he was able to break All Might down.
  • Cut the "Chapter 101" stuff.
  • The part about Deku figuring out that Uraraka was a fake seems like a genuinely cool moment. Keep it, but cut the other "105" parts.
  • Combine the 111 and 112 moments, but expand on it to describe "how" they combined their Quirks to trap Gang Orca. Maybe combine Orca's reaction in 113 too.
  • Cut the offscreen part of 113 and 114.

Last batch of the tearjerker page.

Heroes can cry, but probably not at these
  • Chapter 135 reveals more of Eri's situation. Izuku and Mirio's reactions are a gut-punch, especially when another hero, the ill-mannered and dismissive Rock Lock, rather unfairly criticizes them (Nighteye's organization as a whole) for not doing more to help her.
  • Chapter 138 reveals Chisaki has a father who is desperately on life support and may be the mentor who taught him to be his heir in the Yakuza, so he has something of real personal value to lose if the raid on his compound goes awry. It also gives justification to why Chisaki is so afraid of getting sick and hates disease.
    • And then Chapter 142 implies that Chisaki caused his illness in the first place because he didn't like how he was leading the Yakuza.
      • Cut. I admit, I don't think I fully understood Chisaki's character, but this sounds outright inaccurate and nobody went back to correct it. And even then, it's still pretty weak
  • Chapter 152-153: Shin Nemuto is shown crying through the broken goggle of his plague mask because he failed his friend Overhaul, before passing out. Then Overhaul deliberately cannibalizes Nemuto's body to make himself strong just because he knows Nemuto would gladly sacrifice himself for his friend's sake... it's just callous and brutal.
    • Nemuto is practically a faceless mook. Cut.
  • Chapter 167: Nighteye's funeral. Centipeder takes over his organization and Bubble Girl is in very modest and forlorn clothing, and Mirio is welcome back anytime despite losing access to his Quirk.
    • This was not played for emotion at all. They just went to a funeral.

  • Finally, everything in the "In General" section except for the part about Midoriya and Bakugou's relationship, which should be moved to an earlier section. Everything else is fringe, reaching, speculation and/or weak.

Also, the Heartwarming page has tabs for Fan Works, Meta, and Real Life, and I'm like 80% sure those aren't allowed (especially not Fan Works).

[up] Pretty sure those aren't. Meta moments can be allowed if they relate back to the work, but if they're actor or creator-related they should be zapped.

The Moments cleanup was shot down because from the relevant forum thread it was said "Moments pages haven't had anywhere near the problems of the Nightmare Fuel pages. Moments were renamed from Crowning Moment specifically because no one cared about it any more. Yes, you can list every single funny moment in an entire series. That is allowed, and has been for years."

I assume that applies to awesome/heartwarming/sad moments too, but making them more concise or combining them is definitely a good move.

Here's my take on Hero Academia's Heartwarming page.

     My not-so-heartwarming Academia
  • Also while funny, All Might giving Midoriya an autograph without having to ask is rather sweet of him. Shows how much of the Big Good he really is in this world.
    • Sounds like a weak example
  • All Might's method of training Midoriya into someone who can handle the power of One for All is to have him clean trash off a beach. He explains that this is because his idea of a hero is someone who doesn't just fight villains and rescue people, but who also helps out their community.
    • Sounds weak to me
  • Kirishima says he wishes that he had a more flashy quirk to help him get noticed better, since his doesn't seem all that impressive, but Midoriya assures him that his quirk is awesome and he's sure to become a pro with it.
    • Maybe, but probably not
  • Despite being her opponent in the training exercise, despite getting really into his role as a villain, and despite only knowing each other for a few days, Iida doesn't hesitate to comfort Uraraka as she tries to keep from throwing up after using her powers too much.
    • Basic courtesy and was extremely minor (I don't remember it at least). Probably listed under the wrong arc too.
  • It's a small one, but chapter 19 had Midoriya stop himself midsentence to honor Tsuyu's request to be referred to by her given name.
    • Basic courtesy
  • In chapter 34, after Shinsou's flashback over everyone saying he'd make a good villain, the audience and his classmates congratulate him on his match and tell him he'd make a fantastic hero. There's a panel where his eye is hidden by a speech bubble, but looking at the rest of his face you can tell he's on the verge of crying from joy.
    • What makes this better, is that most of the heroes look pretty evil themselves! They might know how it feels to have a Quirk that's considered 'evil', but became heroes anyway!
    • The Cherry on top is that the first hero who outright stated interest in having Shinsou as a sidekick looked like a dragon-human hybrid with wings, so his Quirk is likely a heavy combat focused one. That such a guy would honestly appreciate a more passive quirk like Shinsou's enough to want to help mold him as a hero in the future is very touching.
    • Finally, one of the heroes who praises Shinsou's performance is Ms. Joke, a hero who appears again later in the manga about 70 chapters later. Her Quirk, like Shinsou's, is completely ineffective against robots like the ones fought in the practical exam, meaning she probably wasn't in the Hero class either, and yet, she's a pro hero. There's hope for Shinsou yet.
      • Main point is valid. The subpoints are weak, speculative, and/or fringe
  • In the same chapter, we see a flashback to young Todoroki watching an interview with All Might when the latter says that all that matters is who you are, not where you come from, that truly matters. It really drives home just how important All Might is, and it's hearwarming to think that there might be many kids out there whom All Might helped just by talking on live TV.
    • First sentence is already mentioned in another post. The second sentence is something we've known since chapter 1
  • Chapter 40: While it was expected of Uraraka and Tenya to visit Midoriya in the infirmary after losing to Todoroki, Tsuyu and Mineta join them too. It shows that a friendship sparked between them during the Villains Invasion Arc.
    • Sounds weak to me. They were only there for a few panels.
  • Oddly enough, All For One's lenience towards Shigaraki in chapter 89, saying that even if he fails, he can just try again.
    • On a first readthrough I can see this being heartwarming, but after we find out All For One is using him as a tool for revenge a few chapters latter it sucks out the heartwarming. Probably not.
  • Tiger is this for LGBTQ readers: a transman pro hero who is loved by his team, respected by all his fellow heroes and students, who also kicks major villain ass.
    • Seems fine, but it was listed under the Hideout Raid arc tab, where Tiger doesn't do much. Should I move it to School Trip, Meta, or make a "General" tab?
  • As a whole, together with the implications that the setting of the manga is actually a futuristic earth, it may have the view that various sexualities and gender identities are accepted in the hero society.
    • Speculation
  • When All Might comes over to Midoriya's house he sees all the posters of him and it brings a smile to his face. especially since he no longer has the power of One For All
    • Not sure, probably cut. I always saw it as more of an awkward look than a smile.
  • Power Loader's relationship with his student, Hatsume. Despite constantly threatening to ban her from his lab, due to Hatsume having a tendency to go overboard with her inventions, he is actually quite impressed and proud with the output of creations she's made in such a short span. He even asks Midoriya, Iida, and Uraraka to show patience with her antics since he's confident that Hatsume will become an effective support for the heroes in the future.
    • Don't know.
  • Chapter 113: All the students from the different schools joining forces to protect the civilians from Gang Orca's men. Extra points because at the start of the stage the Hero's Association even said that they weren't looking for someone to fill All-Might's shoes, but a generation of heroes willing to work together for the greater good.
    • Sound more like an awesome moment. Wasn't protecting civilians part of the test?
  • Shinsou is implied to have been working out and training since the Sports Festival. Midoriya's words are likely still with him and he still wants to become a hero. This is heightened by the fact that it seems that he has been recognized by his efforts before.
    • Speculation
  • Chapter 135: Despite his previous harsh treatment towards Midoriya, Sir Nighteye is actually quick in this chapter to defend both him and Mirio when they were getting blasted by another senior hero for failing to save Eri. Not only does Sir Nighteye take responsibility since they were following his orders, but he also takes back his previous criticism of Midoriya, praising him for attempting to take the initiative.
    • Weak. Was only two panels and three speech bubbles in the middle of an overall serious sequence
  • Chapters 135-138 are a continuous one for Fatgum, who is the first person to defend Sir Nighteye's actions when Lock Rock gripes at his organization for being ineffective, showing the most outrage at the thought of what Chisaki is doing to his daughter Eri, and for still finding time to be polite upon entering a Yakuza residence and apologizing that the heroes are entering with their filthy shoes.
    • Fatgum is a normally nice person, and nothing here is particularly standout.
  • Chapter 146 continues the above moment as Rappa is still conscious after Fatgum's attack, but instead of continuing the fight he shows Fatgum to a medical room so he can treat Kirishima's injuries, saying how much he likes him and wants to fight him again someday.
    • Probably not, although I can kind of see it staying. maybe.

I am not convinced that a big deletion on the Awesome etc. pages is warranted. Other people are allowed to have an opinion, after all.

I won't have access to a PC for a few days, so I won't be able to make any more big posts and edits since typing is a bit harder on a tablet than on a keyboard. I can still reply to others, but anything involving lots of special formatting will be a big hassle that I'd rather not do.

[up] In my opinion at least, it seems that the people making these edits don't even hold the opinion that these scenes are awesome/heartwarming/sad/etc. They just want to pad out the page to make their favorite show look cooler/more emotional. Nightmare Fuel had the same issue, where people thought Darker and Edgier = good, and therefore every good show needs a lengthy NF page (this mentality resulted in every single episode of My Little Pony having at least one example at one point, even when it was a simple Slice of Life with no real danger other than maybe slapstick violence, and the page proudly stating this as if it were a good thing).

Also, if Awesome Moments is simply a list of every time someone accomplishes something, Heartwarming is every single nice thing a character does, Tear Jerker is every time someone feels a negative emotion, these pages are useless and may as well not exist. If we allow all of these things, who would possibly want to read such a page, other than fanboys and girls metaphorically masturbating over how much better their show is than the rest? Maybe a Heartwarming page listing every single instance of common courtesy in the show could be used to teach kids about manners, but I doubt this is the wiki's goal.

[up]x8: I may have been a bit overzealous due to going into this with a cynical point of view. I agree with these arguments for why some of these cuts should be reverted or not done.

[up][up]Even ignoring the issue of whether or not certain details can or can't get a reaction out of people, some of the worst pages are just very badly written. Duplicate entries, people adding their own theories/headcannons, fan works, Outright incorrect information (often because of some latter event in the story.) etc.

Okay. Last up, here's my take on Hero Academia's Funny moments page. This is... tricky. It's much more difficult to spot whether or not a negligible/nonexistant amount of people will find something funny compared to the other pages. Especially since I can't remember every single short gag in the series. So I'm being especially cautious here.

     Hero Academia not-so-funny moments
  • Then All Might drops the massive bombshell on him that he's chosen Izuku to inherit his Quirk. He goes from crying Tears of Joy to completely blank eyes... then his head lolls over to one side with a weak squawk of, "...Huh...?" It's as if at that particular moment, Izuku's mind just collapses into a state of total overload, like trying to properly register that his childhood idol just gave him the means to stop being Quirkless on top of everything else he's been through is a Divide by Zero.
    • Valid. But the final sentence seems pretty ramble-y, and natter-y
  • A side note during the Calvary battle: when everyone forms their cavalries, practically all the riders go barefoot (Kendo even has her pant legs up rolled up all spunky and tomboyishly) so the rugged soles of their shoes don't dig into the skin and hands of the people holding them up. That is to say, everyone except Bakugou, who arguably has the meanest shoes of anybody in the festival, the combat boots taken straight from his costume. Thankfully, at least Kirishima is his steed, and his Hardening quirk spares him any pain. Sero and Mina aren't so lucky.
    • Really minor detail that doesn't really add much humor
  • The relentless Running Gag that Kirishima and Tetsutetsu are so similar they might as well be Xeroxes of each other. Their Quirks are not only fundamentally the same, but their fight intros are also the same, and even their battle ends in a draw, forcing them to default to an arm-wrestling match. Kirishima wins because it turns out the weaknesses of their Quirks are different- Tetsutetsu suffers from metal fatigue after being forced to bear continuous load stress without loading up on iron consumables, while Kirishima can only maintain his Hardening for a limited time.
    • The joke about the two of them being similar is 100% valid, but that tangent about how they have different weaknesses is irrelevant and should be cut
  • Fallen Angels scans went with the unusually affectionate "Angel Face" in their translation, making it sound like Bakugou is sadistically flirting with her.
    • Scanslation only jokes are irrelevant
  • If you'll pay close attention to the class greeting Aizawa in Episode 26, even Kouda says, "Good morning, Sensei!" Good manners supercede even the tightest of the tight-lipped!
    • This is only noteworthy in hindsight. And even then, it's not particularly humorous
  • Meta: At least the U.A. students have the jurisdiction to choose their own Hero names rather than having them imposed upon them by some snooty organization. "Caped Baldy" ring a bell?
    • A random and irrelevant One Punch Man reference.
  • Kouta gave Izuku an apologetic letter for his disgraceful behavior back at the training camp, gifting Izuku with his very first keepsake as a hero. Yet, it's really absurd to think you would feel proud of your accomplishments as a hero instead of ridicule when your first souvenir of your heroic career is a hand-written apology note about punching you in the balls.
    • It comes back in Chapter 97 during All Might's house call, when Izuku runs off to his room to go fetch it and then comes back and starts waving it around like a badge of honor in front of his mom and All Might. It overlaps with heartwarming, but still... the dude's got a living reminder of a ruthless nut shot that can never hang on his wall without being giggled at by onlookers.
    • Main point is valid. Subpoint is redundant.
  • Kirishima produces an expensive night-vision spy camera out of the blue. Then, we get a very rare moment where an author gleefully refuses to apply fictional brand naming in their manga when Kirishima legitimately mentions he got it from Amazon (not the case in the anime, which opts for "Omozon" because it can't get away with the name-drop)
    • Buying something on Amazon isn't funny.
  • Chapter 145: In a magazine-wide Funny Background Event celebrating the 20th anniversary of One Piece it's the invasion of the straw hats, where we have Luffy's straw hat making a cameo in the story on top of the head of Kirishima's friend. What are they gonna do when all these shows that have anime to their names get adapted and we have inexplicable straw hats popping up out of nowhere across the board? Guess you could explain this one away because the MHA universe takes place in a realistic Japan with One Piece as a popular manga and that straw hat is a piece of fan merch.
    • It's just a background shout out, and just a guy wearing a hat. That's it.
  • Chapter 148: Toga understands and sympathizes with the tortured soul of Twice all of one time, and he immediately starts begging her to marry him.
  • There's something awfully funny in Chapter 157. Overhaul giving Deku a maddened "The Reason You Suck" Speech on how he can't possibly understand how groundbreaking his plans would be and how he is hindering the advance of the world and even calling him stupid for it, but Deku's answer is punch his humongous form so hard that he is thrown in the sky and then punch his face throwing his mask away.
    • I reread this sequence again just to be sure, and yeah, huge amount of reaching here. It just isn't funny.
