Hey everyone:

I'm looking into creating a Dresden Files RPG run on this site. I'm leaning towards basing it in Philadelphia, but I'm open to other cities if that's what people want. For people who like DF but who don't know the rules, I'd be more than happy to help in that area as well.

The basics:

This will be a 'Chest deep' campaign. 8 refresh, 30 skill points, cap at Superb. I'm looking for four-five players, ideally. Can probably handle a little deviation in either direction, though. Takes place around the time period of Small Favor. That is to say, the Reds are still a big threat and Warden presence in America is relatively minimal.

Short version: Dresden Files x Suicide Squad

Longer version:

You awaken in a cell. You remember little of your last conscious moments — yelling, gunfire, perhaps a muffled 'thump' as something heavy slammed into your head. But you are not permitted to remain ignorant for long. You are quickly dragged to a conference room, where you see many like yourself — practitioners, supernatural creatures, even mortals with magical artifacts. Many, but not all, are notorious in the area as being among the... less moral of the local supernatural talent. You are informed, by a muscular and overbearing man, that you have just been drafted by a small section of the government, which has accepted his proposal for 'reducing the magical threat to humanity' by means of firepower. Your job will be, as a unit, to 'deal with' various supernatural problems in the city. Succeed and 'clean' the city, and you'll be free to go. Fail, or disobey, and you'll be killed. As the man informs you of the various countermeasures he's taken to ensure that you don't blow up the base, flee into the NeverNever, or desert while in the city, your heart sinks. You have no choice but to do what he says — at least for now.

On 'missions,' you will be sent into the city. You will have to determine how best to deal with the supernatural threats and other forces they encounter. The general wants them destroyed, and some of them probably do deserve it, but when your group encounters the friendly neighborhood coven, do you kill them to gain favor with the general, or struggle to find some way to let them flee the city? And in between, you 'recuperate' at the military base outside of town. This is the chance for you to try to gain information, weapons, or even allegiance from the other guards and prisoners. Short term goals will mostly be limited to dealing with various 'problems' in the city. But in the longer term, what will you do about your entrapment? You could team up with some of the other prisoners to try a jailbreak, but some of them might be better off behind bars. You could try to align with some of the soldiers — there must be a few, surely, who objects to the general's methods — but blow a crucial Rapport check and you could be in for a world of hurt. While in the city, you might make alliances with the local factions to fight the general, but is being in their debt any better? Or, lastly, you could well decide — as you stand atop a ruined Ghoul hideout, with an AK 47 in one hand and a blasting rod in the other — that maybe working for the general isn't so bad after all. Free room and board, decent pay, awesome toys, and hey, you're starting to find this kind of thing rather fun...

Sign-ups:

If you are interested, post character ideas. Due to the concept of the campaign, the character should have at least some connection to magic — a supernatural creature, a practitioner, a guy with a magic artifact, someone who studies occult lore, that kind of thing ('guy who knows nothing about magic and just stumbled into this sort of thing', while workable in other DF campaigns, wouldn't be abducted in the first place). I'll review them and pick the ones that would work best in the campaign (and on that note, feel free to post two or three character ideas if you have them). I'll post in this thread saying approved players/characters. Guest star aspects can be blank at this stage (for obvious reasons).

City is still up in the air. Between 1/2 and 2/3 of the action will take place in the city. I'm leaning towards Philadelphia, but I'm okay with any fairly major urban environment in America. Feel free to post suggestions.

Once a city is chosen, players should start adding faces/themes/locations/etc.

The military base will be where all the non-city action is. Feel free to add faces/themes to that as well (a corrupt quartermaster? A lieutenant who perhaps doesn't think this 'draft' is a good idea? A bloodthirsty sergeant whose sister was once eaten by a ghoul and now hates all magical folk? A fellow prisoner who's violated several laws of magic and wonders if maybe the general would be a good ally against the Wardens?).

A few notes on characters:

In terms of morality, the characters can range from 'good' to kind of bad. It would be unlikely that the general would trust a psychopathic killer enough to put him or her in a frontline unit, though, so the characters shouldn't be totally nuts (or, if they are, they should have hidden it very well). I'm okay with most homebrew stunts, but I might ask for a change if something's outrageous. I'm relatively flexible, though.

Similarly, I don't mind if characters know the Dresden characters tangentially ('trained with Murphy,' 'was saved from death by Carpenter'), although if it's a very close bond ('Harry visits every weekend') that may cause a problem with the campaign.

I'll get into exactly how they're trapped working for this guy in the actual campaign, but for now, trust that there are in-game reasons why the characters can't simply blow up the place or open a portal to the NeverNever.

This sounds good, but I'm just going to link these:

The non-Fate one is currently running.

All those ... moments will be lost... in time, like... tears... in rain.

I saw those, but it looks like the FATE run isn't currently running, and this would be using the FATE rules (I find rule-based RP Gs preferable to freeform, personally). Plus this is in a different city with a different conceit, so I think it's different enough.
