I remember a poster here once said he's family are Ilocano. Forgot who he is, though.
Right now you and Passerby gave me a nose-bleed since I'm used to reading everything in English, not Filipino (or Ilocano, but any "dialects" count. Don't get me started on my opinion of calling Tagalog Filipino, but not Bisaya. Fucking equal treatment!!!) I HATE YOU GUYS JUST SPEAK IN ENGLISH, WHY THE HELL ARE YOU TORTURING ME WITH YOUR WOOOOOOORDS. D:<
So continue speaking in English with people you hang out with then by trying too hard...but that defeats the purpose of practicing, huh? So it's good to get used to understanding Filipino first instead of focusing on speaking or writing in it. Radio Station advice programs note helped me understand Filipino. Those are pretty good, even when some of the problems are rather petty and stupid. -shudders-
One of my teachers even said that I'm not very familiar with layman's terms
Could be fixed with getting used to hear people speak (or read if you could handle it, those modern pocket books, some are good and for P20 I think.) in Filipino, and those stupid advices that I suggested above. Don't be too hard on yourself not getting what they say or written at first, you'd get used to it.
Hence my opinion over why Anime sub readers tend to be good at understanding English.
On the out-of-topic subject of failing Filipino classes: It's funny how in High School, the reason why I scored high on the tests was because I've read the English translated version of those classic literatures instead. I loved Noli Me Tanghere and El Fili, to the point where I read Rizal's biography and took it to heart. note So I probably cheated anyway Filipino class.
I didn't like how students never gave good Fil. literature a chance just because they had a nose-bleed over it, or tried reading the English version or think it's too outdated. Not that I read English classic literature since Old English is hard to understand and I don't have a valid reason to find a modern translated version.. Oh fuck I sound like some old lady now. ~_~
And, I'm finished. Again. Sorry for taking too much words over something so simple.
To be honest, I haven't since the only time I've been serious in my studies was on my third year of High School. Kept having a 73 till on my first year. ~_~
What the heck is a Hierophant?
Edit: Didn't realize I repeated what you said. ~_~

My Filipino is downright horrible as well. ._.
I remember crying in the middle of Filipino class when I was younger because I couldn't understand anything, and when the teacher asked me a question I couldn't answer anything, either.
Oh, the problems with growing up with English. :/
It just makes me sad that people judge other people with what language they're speaking. For example, there's a guy in my class that has a hard time speaking Filipino, so we talk together in English.
Often, a random classmate will butt in and say "Mag-Filipino naman kayo! Magkaka-nosebleed na ako ehh!" ...Even though they were not included in the conversation. At all. @.@ Then of course the guy can't open up anymore. Le sigh.
EDIT: Also, what's an hierophant?

I never study, and I always get a stable average of 85. Let it be known that I despise the Brilliant, but Lazy label, though, so I just peg it down to my high school being sort of shit.
If you wanna PM me, send it to my mrsunshinesprinkles account; this one is blorked.![]()

Same.
My teachers keep lecturing me, saying I'm Brilliant, but Lazy. ._. I'll admit to the lazy part. I don't want to be in the top sections for example, because then things would be harder.
The "brilliant" part is actually just me liking science topics, and probably understanding the text. If I didn't like it or it was in Filipino, I'd most likely fail. Exhibit A: My history tests.

But... but I thought he wouldn't get along with TV Tropes!
I don't actually understand what Wikipedia's saying.
Hi! Welcome to the thread, welcome to the thread! :3
note
CHAJI WHY ARE YOU STALKING ME!!!
I remember crying in the middle of Filipino class when I was younger because I couldn't understand anything, and when the teacher asked me a question I couldn't answer anything, either.
Oh, the problems with growing up with English. :/
Aye. I hate having a hard time understanding a lesson, in my case fucking math and Filipino. Instead of studying hard for it, I kept being an antisocial autistic drawing at the back of my class, making a comic about a smart Alec Bunny or writing random Max x OC fanfiction. My sister still mocked my horrible english back then since I don't know how to do punctuations. I still have it. XD note
Yeah. Just because you speak fluent English doesn't mean you're a fucking rich snob. Like hangs out with like, I used to be friends with a foreign geek outcasts back then. It was awesome since we had a bunch of in common, but people kept thinking I was only using her as the reason for why I kept hanging out with her. Sheesh I should stop using that word. xD
They're fucking jealous jerks who doesn't have an inkling about social etiquette. Not open up to the point where he kept choosing too carefully over the people to hang out with, or got too traumatized to speak around other people? If that were the case, that's too sad. Hehehe, so wordy. XD
WHAT THE FUCK IS A HIEROPHANT AND WHY DID YOU BRING IT UP? DON'T LEAVE ME HANGING (Spellcheck suggested Diophantine. Now I'm more confused.)
Edit: Thanks JM.
You subtle cocky little bastard. Just admit you listen to class, I don't even care. I kept dreaming my days away in class.

Ang nakaraan...
...Actually, that's pretty much the only context given, so it ruins the thing. Aww man.
The search for hierophant continues.
Great, now I'm stuck on a Wiki Walk starting from Diophantine and I don't even understand anything.
Yeah, who the heck wants to do hard work we don't give a shit about?!? (Even when they're doing that to make us students a well-rounded individual, but I don't give a shit about it anyway. :v) In the end, when I force myself to study those crap I kept forgetting it the end of the day, not absorbing anything. D:
I don't understand Science or Economics or anyother texts I'm not interested with, either. And I just memorized Social Studies away. I HATE IT, I'M NOT INTERESTED IN MY FOREFATHERS. In college, the only course I had a high grade in is Psychology, and I haven't even read the textbook much. But probably because I'm way too obsessed to read about those topics. It's the only topic I'm good at and I'm dumb at everything else even in English class since I didn't know how to use sentence modifiers. ~_~
Screw this my grammar is getting horrible. Whatever. I hate being OC.
I never studied seriously :c except this one time in biology I was about to have biology summer classes because of how bad my grades were so I studied like hell. Passed with flying colors. I'd say I'm pretty good at studying.

Time to converse:
Among the many problems sa speaking includes a very limited vocabulary waaaaaaay less than 50 persyento kag mixing Tagalog kag Ilonggo
I try to read fil lit, but at worst I feel confused, at best I get the general sometimes specific idea
Wala ako mahusay na skills sa lingwahe pero that doesnt prevent me from seeing ng mga iba't ibang entertainment sa filipino whether local or dubbed (gamay lang I find interesting though)
In my case, I can understand Tagalog, but if I had to speak it... Let's just say I'm better off speaking Cebuano. Or English, for that matter.
Florante at Laura... I had a wonderful time with that in my high school days.
The Southpaw has no brakes! But the textbooks... I have to translate phrases on the fly just to get the context.
The Southpaw has no brakes!dudes. Tarot Troubles.
a hierophant = a priest/the pope.
so much to do, and yet... here, it feels like one cannot do anything but lie here and sleep forever.
Ugh. Got a hunch about that. I'm guessing you read a manga I forgot about?
Well, I think it's impossible to expect a person to recite word by word about the last novel or book unless if they've finished and took it by heart right? And read it over and over like those certain Ayn Rand or Rizal fanatics...so I probably don't blame you for having a hard time expressing in words about a topic they know about, but doesn't know how to go on about it. They just do, as stock knowledge. I think.
Fucking stupid essays about SONA and reading about Gloria or Noynoy. Who the fuck cares about that. How can they expect gradeschoolers to write about that properly?!? They're just kids...
-coughs- Another quoteblock since I'm bored as hell.
That's good. :) I'm hoping there would be more people like you that wants to branch about stuff they aren't familiar about, which is lacking in this crab mentality culture of ours, dragging people down for petty, personal reasons. note Especially when it comes to religion or personal beliefs. This is probably the reason why the newer generations are getting dumber as the years go by. (At least, those who don't have access on the internet, books and/or cabled television. I shouldn't say less privileged/poor fellowmen since they could probably be more literate than affluent people) note
Probably the reason why you understand Tagalog pretty well is because of those variety shows, hmmmmmm?
I wish there are other dialects in local television with subs too to widen our perspective...not that I'm interested in learning a new dialect/language since it would be a pain to look for people who would understand.
Annoyingly I get distracted when reading subs while watching the stuff which I understand pretty well, and getting lost into the translation...ugh. Stupid hard subbed dual-audio anime...
I can't write it well either, or when I speak it I get all the sentence syntax wrong...like: Bakit kailangan pa ninyo mag-salita ng Pilipino kung naiintindihan ko naman kayo ng maayos?
My head hurt from that.
Florante and Laura? What the heck is that? >:3 Seriously, I didn't know what the heck happened there either much other than Florante being in jail for reasons I forgot about. xD
Yeah, especially in college exams. Unless if your professor is as brutal as ours expecting to memorize fucking Philippine History with quizzes. Sheesh. What do they think of us students, robots that could recite everything?
Yep. Same, same. Even when reading Filipino confuses me. I'd get, what the heck did I just read? It was filled with text speak and emoticons too! At least with those cheap pocket books, the authors are decent at speaking in Taglish...
On an unrelated note over reading fanfiction: A good writer that has many reviews does not make them a writer. Ew. Just, ew. Brain bleach please.
Hehehe. Nightcore is so awesome, it's upbeat, invigorating and addictive to hear.
INFO DUMP.
