Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules
still apply.
- This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
- While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread
. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
- Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.
If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Or Baron Mordo.
Either way, I doubt we'll ever see a cinematic Shuma-Gorath.
Whoops. Didn't fully read the above post. Sorry.

"Cynic, n. — A blackguard whose faulty vision sees things as they are, not as they ought to be." - The Devil's DictionaryBaron Mordo would be a good villain for the Strange movie itself. The Hood would be a good villain to appear in something else while alluding to Dormammu's arrival in Strange 2.

Judging from the 15 second clip, which admittedly isn't much to go on, it looks like Hank's daughter, Hope, is going to be a significant character in the movie.
Maybe the reason why Janet isn't going to be in the movie is because they want Wasp to be around the same age as Ant-Man. Since they are going straight to the Scott Lang Ant-man with Hank Pym already getting on in age and serving in a more mentorship role, then with a little Adaptational Heroism Hope is probably the best choice.
This is corroborated by MCU Hope going by her mother's last name of van Dyne rather then Pym, which draws a closer association with her mother over her father.

I would be surprised if there wasn't at least something between Scott and Hope, although how central it will be to the plot is up in the air. Marvel hasn't been terribly heavy-handed with romance arcs and occasionally doesn't even both with them. For example Tony Stark and Pepper Potts didn't get together until Iron Man 2, and neither of the 2014 MCU movies had romance arcs of any real consequence.
Not for lack of trying on Black Widow's part. Fun fact: She played the matchmaker in her school's play of Fiddler on the Roof in at least three of her cover identities.
Forever liveblogging the Avengers![]()
In general (with Peggy Carter as the big exception) the love interests haven't been especially strong characters, and none of them have been superheroes in their own right. Given that I have no reason to assume that Hope will be the exception, I'm not going to conclude that she'll be well-characterized or will become Wasp until people who have actually seen the movie tell me so.
Based on what currently know of the movie, I have little interest in seeing it.
That is a fascinating amount of assumptions before we have a full trailer.

People have been getting up in arms about Jan being dead as of the movie, Jan not being Wasp in the movie, etc, but I've always figured it was for the same reasons Hank was elderly, Hank was an inactive player in the MCU thus far, Hank isn't Ant-Man in the movie, etc - both Hank and Jan are being presented as characters whose time is over, whose roles are being passed to the younger, worthy generation, etc.
In that regard, Hank being the only one of his group still alive makes a great deal of sense - in a similar way to Peggy being the only person from Steve's past he visits. The last remnant, kind of thing.

Pepper was at her best when they emphasized her as CEO and gave that part of her plot importance, significance and influence - I really liked her in IM 2 and the very beginning of IM 3 (as Stark Industries in general stopped being plot important almost immediately). IM 3 went with the trap of assuming the only way to give her character the same worth as the heroes was to give her superpowers and have her do badass superhero things, though as a whole IM 3 had problems balancing action with plot/characterization in the first place.
One of the things I thought they should do with Pepper throughout the MCU was have her cameo in movies having nothing to do with Tony, representing Stark Industries - even if it's a blurb on tv or something. Kind of like how everyone in the comics universe goes to the Baxter Building when they have a scientific problem, they've already established Stark Industries as having a major role in the MCU's Earth's development, so establishing Pepper and SI as a staple of the universe would've been a really nice connector.

So has anyone zoomed in on the ant sized trailer? I know it might be blurr, but I'm curious to see what it is.
Is this a Jo Jo reference?![]()

I also think some of their recent decisions say to me at at least they're aware of the criticism about the ...breakdown of their hero community so I can't imagine they wouldn't introduce the Wasp in some fashion.
Especially since Ant-Man gives them an easy springboard a lot of other heroines don't have.
I feel it's outright likely that we'll be seeing Janet as Wasp in the flashbacks alongside Hank as Ant-Man.
Plus, that way they establish more superheroes and heroines of the past (something they've been needing to do for a while, if only to validate some of the things Fury's been saying over the course of the movies) as well as the heroes and heroines of the present.
The direction they're taking it, I feel that Ant Man isn't going to be a massive success. Guardians was a hit because it was a fun 80s style film that focused on character interactions and cool action.

Is this a Jo Jo reference?

Speaking of superhuman crime syndicates, assuming they don't put their cart before their horse and use Dormammu as the villain of the first Doctor Strange film, The Hood could be a good villain to appear in the shows and allude to Dormammu's existence between Strange 1 and 2.
