Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules
still apply.
- This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
- While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread
. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
- Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.
If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

I am not sure if you can compare that. The original trilogy didn't have much concurrence when it came to Comic Book movies. They cerainly hadn't to go up against three other comic book movies (not counting minor productions and animated movies) in the very same year. Al things considered, both TAS movies did well. They just didn't make as much money as Sony expected, but they did make more money than a lot of other comic book movies, including some from the MCU.
While true that they beat out some of the MCU's early films, Amazing 2 is still a strong demonstration of the general downward trend of the Spider-Man films, and came in dead last as far as superhero films in 2014 go on both the domestic and global scales. Sony can't afford to stay the course when every successive film underperforms the previous one by a wide margin.
And they know it. They wouldn't be reconsidering their Spider-Man Cinematic Universe plans if they didn't. Sony's not sure what to do with the franchise at this juncture, between the downward spiral at the box office and the audience's disinterest in the Sinister Six film they spent half of Amazing 2 building up to.

You know the one.
Maybe you'd be less disappointed if you stopped expecting things to be Carmen Sandiego movies. So while discussing the Captain Marvel rumors Emily Blunt says she was up for Black Widow and Peggy Carter
.
I knew about Widow (she made that awful Gulliver's Travel remake instead) but not Carter. She also says if she gets the Cap role to thank Meryl Streep.
Looks like Scarlett Johansson and Haly Atwell have much better agents than Emily Blunt does.
"War without fire is like sausages without mustard." - Jean Juvénal des UrsinsThe main thing acquiring FF gives Marvel Studios over Spider-Man is content (that is, the FF mythos has a great deal more to contribute than the Spider-Man mythos), which Marvel Studios isn't really starving for right now - and at this point, they seem able to acquire secondary characters that might be covered by another mythos at will if they want to anyway (like Ronan).
In fact, the lack of FF and X-Men is likely leading to a similar situation as how the various embargoes effected the DCAU during Justice League - it gave them an opportunity to branch out their focuses, adapt things that might not have been if they were just sticking to the biggest names, and connect their universe in interesting ways.
I knew about Blunt not being Carter, but it had sounded before like she turned it down. Ah well, schedules.
Also according to Collider
, Claudia Kim's character is named Dr. Cho.
Kinda funny if after all that speculation she's just a Canon Foreigner.
Her full name is Amanda Cho, and she is a Gender Flipped adaptation of Amadeus Cho
Studpid decision...I get turning down Peggy Carter because, let's face it, this must have initially looked like a fairly minor supporting role which would lead to nowhere, but Black Widow? She better was already under contract before turning that one down, otherwise that move makes me really doubt her good sense. (But then, I wonder what kind of script the actors of the Gulliver movie got that they ever agreed to starring in the movie).
She was already under contract for the Gulliver movie when approached to Widow. She couldn't sign on due that commitment.
"All you Fascists bound to lose."

Amazing 2 made $202 million, continuing the downward spiral of Spider-Man film sales. Even the much reviled Spider-Man 3 made $336 million. Sony's panicked because if the franchise continues this trend, pretty soon it will start making less than its production costs.
