Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules
still apply.
- This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
- While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread
. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
- Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.
If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

I'm, like, 99% sure there's going to be a surprise reveal that Hank Pym is Yellowjacket like in the comics after all.

Hey, the Russo brothers had a mediocre track record in film too. Maybe the MCU can catch lightning in a bottle twice.
I know, but it still stands. Even their TV work was significantly removed in style from that movie.

I sure hope not.
I think the psychiatric field is dubious on the veracity of disassociative identity disorder and it would be kind of green goblinish. Also, I think Pym's current comic diagnosis is bipolar.
Forever liveblogging the AvengersYeah, I'm saying that's how he's portrayed currently.
Frankly silver age comic psychology doesn't usually match the real world.
Forever liveblogging the AvengersYeah, we should if possible avoid doing more damage to the psychiatric and neuroscience fields than Hollywood already has.
Perhaps his breakdown can happen as a result of some sort of phlebotnium malfunction, but if they do go the fiction-split-personality route it shouldn't be depicted as a legit form of crazy that could happen to anyone.

Maybe you'd be less disappointed if you stopped expecting things to be Carmen Sandiego movies.I have to say that you guys are really extrapolating based on one promotional image. It doesn't even feature Michael Douglas. All I see is Ant Man and Yellowjacket. That effectively says nothing about whether Wasp is in this.
Visit my Tumblr! I may say things. The Bureau ProjectJust for the record, Winter Soldier is a bad example for "a movie with two male leads in which a woman still gets character development" because it is not a movie with two male leads in the first place. The leads in Winter Soldier are the Cap and Black Widow. And remember how much Sharon was sidelined in this construct? Granted, Falcon got a decent character introducion, but again, Winter Soldier had the advantage that it didn't have to spend time on establishing all the other characters above their basics.
I think there are a couple of reasons why they didn't went with Hank Pym. For one, they already have a bunch of scientists, they don't need another one. Two, they don't have a thief yet in the line-up. And three, this way they can avoid the more questionable storylines which are attached to the character. Plus, the common viewer has barely an idea who ant-man is, so I doubt that many would be bothered by the lack of Wasp.
I would think the 'Hank Pym' part is the most vital part of that equation. Whether it's fair or not, Hank still gets stuck with the 'wife-beater' label (Marvel themselves don't really help much with this), and man oh man that would not go over well for publicity.
Visit my Tumblr! I may say things. The Bureau ProjectFalcon's barely in it until the second act and Bucky's got, what, four scenes?
Maybe you'd be less disappointed if you stopped expecting things to be Carmen Sandiego movies.OK then. Steve and Natasha were together more often than not, really, so.
Visit my Tumblr! I may say things. The Bureau ProjectI get you, really I do.
I wasn't trying to pile on.
Visit my Tumblr! I may say things. The Bureau ProjectYou know, I'm not super familiar with the Avengers comics, but I did watch Earth's Mightiest Heroes, which is pretty much the cliff notes version. I had no idea who Ant-Man and Wasp were, but when I saw them on the show, I really, really, really liked them. Wasp was hilarious and adorable (if a little useless, power level-wise) and Hank was a pacifist hero with a cool character arc, which I always like. And then I got to the Yellowjacket episode and I was like "WHAT?"
So yeah, I'm a little bummed out the MCU seems to be skimming over Hank and Janet. Also, Yellowjacket's comic costume is so, so, SO stupid. It's a little hard to be a dark and edgy crazy person when you're dressed as a bumble bee, Hank.

Think Hope/Janet/Wasp is being saved for the end of the film aka she's getting the Vision spot in Ao U. She's there but you won't see it yet.
