Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules
still apply.
- This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
- While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread
. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
- Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.
If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

She looked vaguely leonine. I guess she could be Porcupina (hoping that's not an actual Marvel character but honestly wondering if there is).
You are right though, her personality is totally off for Tigra (even taking in account the possibility of Raina being brainwashed by HYDRA).
Edit, edit, edit, edit the wikiAgents of SHIELD would be the best place to use Tigra, I guess.
I don't see her swinging her own movie.
Maybe a Netflix series cameo.
Forever liveblogging the AvengersEh, just like with Black Panther and Doctor Strange, I had hopes for specific people, but hopefully like Black Panther, I'll be okay with this choice.
While I get the desire to see Terry Crews, the man currently stars on two shows. There's no way that was an option.
Joss Whedon has said she is one of his favorite Avengers and someone he had a crush on as a kid. Had he stayed with the franchise I definitely could see her appearing in Infinity War as a new recruit, but if he really is leaving I don't think she's a priority character to include.

On the general subject of Luke Cage, I kind of wonder how the Jessica Jones and Luke Cage Netflix series will be related to each other. If the Luke Cage series is a direct continuation of the events of AKA Jessica Jones, then it could almost be seen as Season 2 of AKA Jessica Jones rather then a different series inhabiting the same continuity.
On another note, I couldn't help but notice that Daredevil and Jessica Jones have very similar origin stories. Both got their powers by being doused by chemicals as a result of a vehicular accident. Now obviously there are some differences particularly in the end results of the accident, but even so why not make it the exact same accident?
Daredevil and Jessica Jones would have to be doused by different mixtures of the chemicals in question, and Jessica would have to avoid getting splashed directly in the eyes. Jessica would then spend the time between that incident and when her series starts recovering from the accident and learning to use her powers and then engaging in her brief stint as Jewel.
Then of course they'd have to deal with the reality that someone is shipping around chemicals that can grant superpowers, but that can be handled by having everyone else whose exposed end up horribly dead, so no one would actually use the stuff on purpose unless they can figure out how to minimize the risks. That could still be used as a story hook later on, but it wouldn't be hanging over the series like a dark cloud of unresolved story.

I'm not really a fan of gender-swapping characters for adaptations and then trying to present them as the exact same character. Minor side characters I'll give a pass to, but main characters need to be played a little safer. Michelle Rodriguez might of been able to play an amazing Sorcerer Supreme, but it wouldn't of felt like Doctor Strange and they would of been lying to the audience to call it that. Sometimes the safe choice is also simply the right choice.
Now when gender-swapping is something that happens within a continuity (such as the Master becoming the Mistress on Doctor Who), I'm also fine with as long as the explanation for why it happened is something that makes sense within the narrative.

Probably, but if not it wouldn't actually be the first time I've heard the idea of a female Doctor Strange brought up in sincerity.
Marvel definitely played it safe with Benedict, and there were some people that wanted them to go completely in the other direction. I personally feel that the safe choice was the right choice in this case.
I believe the thing here is not her playing a female Dr. Strange, but just Dr. Strange. Like how in some presentations of Peter Pan a woman played Peter Pan without changing the character.

Peter Pan is at least Bishōnen so plenty of times the actress still looks like a boy, especially on a distant stage where you can get away with adults playing teens or children playing old men. On film, knowing that a female actress is playing a male character as a male would be constantly and unnecessarily distracting.

Whoops. Looks like I jumped the gun a bit on my last post. Derrickson says the image was fanart.

Agreed. Plus with plays they generally have a far smaller pool of actors/actresses to chose from and thus could find themselves in a situation where none of the boys that tried out could pull off an even vaguely convincing Peter Pan.
I don't think I've ever heard of a major Hollywood production that cast an actress in a male role or vise verse. In very rare instances (such as the original Alien), I've heard of them casting an actress to play a part originally written for a male, but even then they didn't try to pass off the actress as a male in the finished product.
Same deal with race really. In the instance they Race Lift a character for an adaptation, they aren't going to pretend the character is still the original race in the adaptation. For example when Race lifted Xaro Xhoan Daxos for the Game of Throne's adaptation they modified the character's backstory to be an immigrant from the Summer Isles rather then a native of Qarth.

It's been traditional, over a long span of time, to cast girls as Pan.
I agree that it would be a different matter in film. For one thing, theatre generally involves much more suspension of disbelief and use of imagination than film does - I've seen Shakespeare plays with any mix of era, gender, and race, and it doesn't require any extra explanation that would, in a film, be demanded by the audience. It leaves them free to just pick the best actors.

I once saw a female Doctor Strange cosplayer.
She was gorgeous. And had a great costume.
I figure Luke Cage the series would start in a different place than Jessica Jones, and maybe move towards the same time and place at the end.
Didn't Daredevil not get powers from the spill? I thought it just blinded Matt Murdock, but he was independently trained by the Stick and just that much of a badass. But I guess it did heighten his other senses.

We don't know what Raina has yet.
