Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

Her actual first name is Maynight.

I wonder what percentage of this thread's posts have been about the collective characters I'll refer to as "the Rightsless" (Doom, Deadpool, Spider-man, Wolverine, etc.).

[up]To be fair, with all the rumors about Sony being in talks with Marvel thanks to leaked emails and whatever else, Spidey is at least somewhat relevant to talk about.

I've got fanfics for Frozen, Spectacular Spider-Man, Crash Bandicoot, and Spyro the Dragon.

Whedon has some stuff to say about Vision and the Maximoffs. Kind of interesting.

During Phase Two, Hawkeye wasn’t around too much, and I’m curious if we’re gonna find out what he’s been up to in this film?

WHEDON: Um, yeah, we are. ‘Cause something’s up with that boy. That’s all I’m gonna say.

Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch, you brought them in, and you have the Vision. That’s like a second team like Hawkeye and Captain America in the old days. And they’re not mutants now. Are you bringing them in with the age of miracles? Are they going to be an Inhuman thing? Is there an explanation besides just war technology?

WHEDON: Strucker’s been doing experiments, and he’s got the scepter, and he’s been using alien tech to do them. It’s kind of where I landed with that, but look for an exciting retcon in Avengers 6!

Talk then turned to Pietro and Wanda Maximoff (Elizabeth Olsen and Aaron Taylor-Johnson), aka Quicksilver and the Scarlet Witch, as Joss Whedon was asked about the twins being introduced in the "Age of Mircles" and whether or not war technology is the only explanation of their origins. "[Baron von] Strucker’s been doing experiments, and he’s got the scepter, and he’s been using alien tech to do them. It’s kind of where I landed with that, but look for an exciting retcon in Avengers 6!" After reiterating that every character in Avengers: Age of Ultron is "strong but damaged by power," Whedon said of the Scarlet Witch, "Her damage pre-dates her power, and these kids, they’ve had a rough history. But is she in an idiom with which I am comfortable? Why, yes sir, she is. (laughter)" About connecting the Maximoffs' relationship with the Iron Man/ Ultron dynamic, which will seemingly drive the plot, Joss Whedon said that they did initially feel like two separate stories. "They did, and that was, you know, a concern for Marvel for a long time, but a lot of the working out of the story was how do we get these things connect?" he said. "I’m not probably going to explain that, but it’s very important to me that they do feel like part of the same story, and part of the same universe, and all their origins are tied up in each other."

Well, apparently there won't be Spider-man in Civil war, even if Marvel and Sony come to an agreement there won't be more than a cameo.

That's because the movie starts shooting in just a few months. The only other option is to either delay the movie or completely rewrite the script just before shooting, and neither choice is very attractive.

So if I'm reading Whedon right it seems the twins are the results of Strucker's experiments as apposed to necessarily having innate powers. Or if their powers were natural, Strucker had to use his experiments to activate them (either that or he enhanced them, if they were already there).

Well, it means their powers might not have anything to do with the Inhumans plotline, might introduce another source of superpowers (for them to ignore, no doubt), might be a gateway to other character reveals or reveal something new about alien tech (Whedon bringing up the scepter in regards to his experiments is interesting, and might shed some light on the scepter's nature), etc.

[up]A theory I'd heard the theory that it could be related to the concepts established in Iron Man 3 about the human brain having slots that serve as indications that humans are destined to be upgraded.

Especially since the scepter has the ability to manipulate the mind.

“Marvel, they have their thing and there’s a certain formula to it all which seems to still be working.”

“But how many times can you say ‘you’re wearing a funny costume’ with the tights and stuff? That’s been going on for 20 years now.”

“Yes, we all know that superheroes are damaged individuals. Maybe we need to see a happy superhero?”

“I remember ‘Batman’ getting so much flak and criticism at the time for being too dark and now 20-30 years later, it now looks like a light-hearted romp, it’s such a strange thing to go through.” Burton told Yahoo Movies.

MCU movies are extremely light-hearted compared to stuff like the Dark Knight trilogy or Man of Steel.

Like, it's the main reason I enjoy them at all. They don't take themselves too seriously.

Yeah let's take Burton word with a grain of salt, at least when it comes to comic book movies.

I think the Marvel movies are quite a unique mix in the world of Superhero movies. They are really, really light-hearted, but at the same time ready to address serious issues. They do take care to address the struggles of the Superheroes, but they are neither glum nor melodramatic.

Back to Scarlett witch and Quicksilver: I always assumed that their powers were the result of an extremis experiment, but if it is something else, it would be okay too...Marvel just should pay attention that they don't invent too many possibilities to become superpowered.

Wasn't Not Sunfire in Agents of Shield just randomly born with the ability to create fire? Why can't they just say the same thing about the Twins? They don't need to call them mutants to have them be born with powers.

On Burton's comments on 'wearing tights' jokes.

We haven't had a single one in a very long time. Has he even watched any recent ones? The whole thing with Marvel is that they're not afraid of getting super colourful and comic-bookish with their costumes. And no one ever brings it up, so I have no idea what he's talking about.

[up][up][up] They're apparently not doing that, given that they're pointing to Strucker's experiments and technology as the cause.

A short conversation with Fitzsimmons brings up a possible origin for Chan as being in the general vicinity of a nuclear power plant that caught fire, but it's never conclusively confirmed or denied as to whether or not this is the actual source of his powers.

Let's see...so far we had Superpowered beings which were created in some sort of experiment, and those which just got exposed to something. Even the Inhumans are technically the result of an experiment, just one which happened a long time ago span multiple generations, plus their abilities apparently need to get triggered, too.

IIRC, they never said how Absorbing Man got his powers in the MCU. He could've been born with them.
