Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

It won't make the previous films good (unless maybe it offers a big payoff on stuff the previous were building up to), but it will make the prospect of future films with this version of the character/actor combo more appealing.

Just look what Indiana Jones 3 did for the franchise. Temple of Doom is, imho, a horrible movie, but since the third part was so good, it often gets a pass as part of the good original trilogy.

Indeed.

Didn't the first Iron Man film happen before Civil War? Also, part of the reason that those other films are so anticipated is that they aren't another Marvel film based on a white guy (well Doctor Strange is, especially after they chose Benedict Whiterbatch instead of Pedro Pascal or someone else cast out of my wet dreams). People assume Spider Man would be a spotlight stealer because that's what he generally is.

Stark was really hated due to the Civil War story(which wasn't nice to anyone) which ended 2007. A year later his movie comes out.

The fallout from the story also had a part in Peter and MJ selling their marriage to Mephisto, ending the very beloved JMS run of the comic with the writer wanting his name struck from the cover of One More Day.

Why does Mephisto even want their marriage?

Probably somehow more "meaningful" than Spidey or MJ's soul.

I guess the Doylist answer would be "the writers wanted to dissolve their marriage, and they couldn't think of a more creative way to do it."

They could have at least had the decency to pretend they cared.

Like killing MJ. Or replacing Spider Man.

Or, hell, have her break up with him because he'd be willing to sell his marriage to the devil to save his dying aunt who is perfectly ok with dying.

That little stunt earned him a mention on the list of The 6 Worst Super-Husbands of All Time. [lol]

I don't know about you but I think that would have been hilarious if Mephisto's whole plan was to go 'lol jk' and run off and Mary Jane would have been like "really? you were going to make a deal with the devil?"

What does selling a marriage even mean anyway?

Was Mephisto married to them now? Or were they just not married anymore? Oh no. How terrible.

Mephisto and Harry Osborn had a competition to see who could break up Peter and MJ in the most hilarious way possible. Harry's wager was Spider-Man 3.

I think the loser bought the winner a slice of pie, or something.

I don't know, but that sounds like a good deal to me. I mean, yeah, you don't get the tax benefits I guess, but... eh.

Though it must be noted Mephisto has been always characterized as a weapons-grade dick. He's the kind of guy who'd try to screw you out of a ice cream for no adequate reason other than "It Amused Me".

Mephisto: I am going to bring your totally at peace with death Aunt back to life. Your uncle, who she loves, will stay dead, however. Also, you will forget ever being married, and the woman who you married.

Peter: What do you get out of this deal?

Mephisto: Literally Nothing!

Alternatively, he wants to make sure Aunt May stays alive, because once she dies she'll usurp his dominion and kick him out as the true despot of Hell.

An interesting theory I read (under the premise of fan theories better than the actual plot of the work)- It wasn't Peter who made a Deal with the Devil- It was Norman Osborn, who in exchange for his soul, got Mephisto to erase Peter's marriage/otherwise screw up his life.
