Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules
still apply.
- This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
- While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread
. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
- Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.
If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Let's stay realistic here: Marvel has the slate planned out for the next six years. There won't be a separate Spider-man movie in which they can spend ages on his origin story, no matter what version they pick. That's not what they want, they want Spider-man as part of Civil war. In those movies, Spider-man will be a supporting character, and that limits the time they can spend on him.
I think that there are three options, and that Marvel will take the second one. The first one would be to add the current Spider-man to the MCU. The second one would be that Spider-man turns up as "new hero", not a big explanation or anything like that, perhaps some vague flash-backs to his uncle dying just as a reminder what his motivation is.
Or Marvel goes for the third option, which would be adding a teenager/young adult Spider-man and a new actor, and never specify that it is the same character we say in the sony movies, but leaving the door open for the fans who would like to see it that way.

What I don't understand is why the MCU needs Spidey, other than because fanwanking.
Yes, he was in the comic's Civil War storyline, which is going to get a big screen treatment, but none of the storylines so far have been slaves to the comics, so why is "because he was in the comic CW" really all that important to the movies?
As for Morales vs Parker, I really couldn't give a shit either way, but it also strikes me as more of the aforementioned fanwanking to put Morales behind the mask, when outside of the comics fandom (which really isn't all that important, internet ego aside) almost anyone who knows anything at all about SM will think "Peter Parker" as Spidey's "civilian" face, thanks to the 5-6 movies in the last decade or so if nothing else, plus the various other screen adaptations (big or small) of the character.
All your safe space are belong to Trump
Okay, yes, wanting Spidey in the Avengers is fanwanking, but exactly what part of this whole movie universe concept ISN'T fanwanking? I wanna see Peter Parker interacting with Tony Stark because it would be awesome, kind of like how I wanted to see Steve Rogers interacting with Tony Stark because it would be awesome back in the first Avengers movie.

I've got fanfics for Frozen, Spectacular Spider-Man, Crash Bandicoot, and Spyro the Dragon.I can't speak for everyone but one of the things I like about the MCU is that it gives some of Marve's lesser known heroes a chance to stand out and break into the public consciousness. Spider-Man is already successful. He doesn't need the MCU.
I also think Spidey works better as a separate universe from the primary Marvel Universe but that's a different matter entirely.
Okay, then, Spidey can take the spot from one of the less obscure character's upcoming movies. I'd rather see MCU Spider-Man than Iron Man 4.
Also, Spidey's been part of the Mavel universe from issue #1 (Fantastic Four crossover right off the bat) so I have no idea what the heck you're getting at.

X-Men does, but Spidey isn't really hindered at all by sharing a universe. In fact, I like the idea of Spider-Man just being one superhero of many, befriending Daredevil and Human Torch, etc.

I've got fanfics for Frozen, Spectacular Spider-Man, Crash Bandicoot, and Spyro the Dragon.Regarding Spider-Man and his popularity... I think worrying that he'll pull focus away from lesser-known heroes is giving Marvel too little credit.
The entire Marvel Cinematic Universe is a testament to the power of Marvel's lesser known characters in the right hands. They pulled Iron Man out of the ashes of Civil War, and made him one of the new faces of Marvel. They've given cinematic life to something as obscure as the Guardians of the Galaxy, and it's one of their most successful films. With plans for Doctor Strange, Black Panther, Captain Marvel, and the Inhumans as heavily cheered and celebrated as they are, I don't think Marvel's going to derail whatever they have planned for Phase 3 or beyond just because they get Spider-Man back. Integrate him into those plans? Absolutely. But I think they've earned enough goodwill that we shouldn't assume Spider-Man will become a spotlight stealing squad.
And considering how Sony's been running Spider-Man into the ground, you really can't blame Marvel for wanting him back. Big plans, small plans, or no plans, he's one of their most beloved and most iconic characters. If I was in their position, I'd want him back home just because he deserves better than what Sony has done and plans to do to him.
As far as Sony running the franchise into the ground goes, I'm going to refuse to believe an Aunt May spin-off movie was ever anything but a stupid rumor until the day it's airing in theaters, at which point I'll burn all my Spider-Man comics and quit Spider-Manning forever.

I've got fanfics for Frozen, Spectacular Spider-Man, Crash Bandicoot, and Spyro the Dragon.Don't be so dramatic.
What happens if it was an adaptation of the time Aunt May became Galactus' herald, the Golden Oldie?
Forever liveblogging the Avengers
Well, then I would burn all the comics because they couldn't possibly hold a candle to that.
Wait...a movie about Aunt May? How would that even work?
A movie about May "Mayday" Parker on the other hand....
All those stupid rumours about Sony, including the Aunt May thing, came from the same unreliable source. If it had been true, there would have been something in the mails they have now. The only thing which is running the franchise is the ground is Sony even considering to fire Andrew Garfield. Marvel adding a new Spider-man is understandable, Sony has no excuse whatsoever to even considering removing the best part of their franchise after Emma Stone.
Concerning what Spider-man brings Marvel: A lot! Because Spider-man is the connection between the Avengers and the more Street-level heroes.
Well, despite their flaws, I really liked the two Amazing Spidey movies so far, and I never had a problem with the idea of a Sinister Six spin-off. I'd love to see Andrew Garfield in the MCU, even if it meant the Amazing movies had to stop being made, though. It'd be worth it.
I've got fanfics for Frozen, Spectacular Spider-Man, Crash Bandicoot, and Spyro the Dragon. The only thing Sony needs is to hit it out of the ballpark with TAS 3...but they will need Andrew Garfield for it and stop meddling around.
Very true. In a perfect world, Amazing Spider-Man 3 would be incredible and redeem the franchise, then the Andrew Garfield Peter could show up in the MCU and the Amazing movies could be smoothly integrated into continuity without yet another reboot.

If marvel got the rights to Spidey, they could probably do an amazing Superior Foes Of Spider Man tv series, and I'd be down for that.
