Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

    Original post
Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

He looks punchable. Too attractive. He should play a bad guy.

How is "attractiveness" not a prominent trait of Peter Parker? How many love interests has he had at this point?

I've got fanfics for Frozen, Spectacular Spider-Man, Crash Bandicoot, and Spyro the Dragon.

Yeah. I'm not really seeing how he's not supposed to be attractive.

Didn't he have a crazy roommate that he kind of had romantic tension with but then Chameleon slept with her?

Something like that?

Carlie Cooper, I believe.

Debbie something or other. The one who went crazy because she thought Peter was Spider-Man.

Debra Whitman. I think she ended up writing a tell-all about their relationship after Peter revealed his secret identity. Of course, then One More Day happened, and they couldn't do that sort of thing anymore.

I mostly remember Debra being that one recurring female character he didn't have romantic tensions with in the 90's show. They ended up shipping her with Flash. It was hilarious.

My first intro to Deb from the comics was that story during Civil War with the tell all book. Betty Brant gave her a "The Reason You Suck" Speech. It was also rather hilarious.

I don't think so... granted it's been a long time since I've seen all but a few select episodes of the show.

IIRC she was introduced as an annoying academic rival (Pete introduces her as the little sister he never wanted), and during most of her appearances he already had a love interest. So they did a bit where she fell for Michael Morbius (another good source of hilarity), which ended pretty badly given the whole vampire thing, and then there was a subplot where she blamed herself for his mutation or something (which is where Flash came in), and then they dropped it because Black Cat and Morbius became a thing instead.

I mostly remember her in the first context (as Peter's rival) - I only really remember the later stuff because it's like the only time Flash is in the show.

<goofy accent> "I NEED PLASMA!" </goofy accent> evil grinevil grin

I think Spiderman The Animated Series was an excellent show despite its many flaws, but damn did they just not do accents very well (among other things). Morbius. Doc Ock. Kraven. That horrible stereotype of a Jamaican cabbie from that two part episode. I don't even know what kind of accent Mariah Crawford was supposed to have.

What was wrong with Kraven's accent? D:

Also, the 90s show made Superior Spider-Man SO much stupider for me. All I could think was "YOU'RE TELLING ME NOT ONE FUCKING TELEPATH WENT "Hey, Pete, how come your thoughts are in the voice of a middle age Austrian man?""

So now the latest is that Marvel and Sony will be meeting early next year to discuss this, and that Feige is apparently happy with whatever deal is currently being hashed out. It goes on to report that they want to have Spider-Man in a post-credits scene for one of their big upcoming films, likely Age of Ultron or Civil War.

He wants Avi Arad gone though.

I wonder if Spider-Man being reowned by Marvel would give them more room or less room to make more movies. On one hand, less competition. On the other hand, more stuff to produce.
