Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

Someone wanted a list of the current Avengers teams in the main comics a few days ago to check how the movies affect the comics? I finally remembered it and made a list of some of the teams(there are more)and bolded the ones that are or are going to be in the MCU.

The Guardians are the same as in the movie with temporary Avengers members hanging out for a month or two.

Avengers:

  • Agent Venom(honorary member)
  • Captain America(Sam Wilson)
  • Captain Marvel(Carol Danvers)
  • Hawkeye(Clint Barton)
  • Invisible Woman
  • Nova(Sam Alexander)(honorary member)
  • Steve Rogers
  • War Machine

New/Multiversal Avengers:

  • Black Widow
  • Cannonball
  • Manifold
  • Pod
  • Shang-Chi
  • Smasher
  • Spider-Woman
  • Sunspot
  • Validator
  • Zebra Kids
  • Abyss
  • Ex Nihili(including Ex Nihilo)
  • Hyperion
  • Nightmask
  • Thor Odinson(no Hammer)
  • Star Brand

Secret Avengers:

  • Black Widow
  • Phil Coulson
  • Nick Fury Jr.(pretty much)
  • Hawkeye(Clint Barton)
  • Maria Hill
  • Spider-Woman

Young Avengers:

  • Hawkeye(Kate Bishop)
  • Hulkling
  • Marvel Boy
  • Miss America
  • Prodigy
  • Speed
  • Wiccan

Mighty Avengers:

  • Blade
  • Blue Marvel
  • Captain America(Sam Wilson)
  • Kaluu
  • Power Man
  • She-Hulk
  • Spectrum
  • White Tiger
  • Dave Griffith(support)
  • Jessica Jones(support)
  • Soraya Khorasani(support)

Might not be 100% accurate since I don't read the team books myself.

For the books I read, that's basically right.

For clarification - Fury Jr is a different character that took over Fury's job and is very similar to the MCU one. A Decomposite Character, I suppose. Also, Loki was a member of the Young Avengers but did so in his kid and teen forms and left at the end of their last book.

Yep. Loki is currently on a very interesting team:

Astonishing Avengers:

  • Absorbing Man
  • Carnage
  • Doctor Doom
  • Enchantress
  • Hobgoblin
  • Jack O'Lantern
  • Loki
  • Magneto
  • Mystique
  • Sabretooth

[up][up][up]Uncanny Avengers has Sam Wilson, the Vision, Scarlet Witch, and Quicksilver.

Then if we're talking about soon-to-be introduced characters confirmed for the MCU the Illuminati/New Avengers has Iron Man, Black Panther, and Doctor Strange.

Man, there are too many Avengers teams. I actually completly forgot Uncanny(don't they go by a different name now?).

oddly the planet is no more safe than before.

Of course not. They avenge things, they don't protect things.

Like, how hard is it to just come up with new names and reasons for your superteam besides "Oh, the name "Avenger" guarantees a 2 percent increase in sales!" This is why nothing new happens in comics. It's easier just to bring old stuff back, or glue new stuff to the old stuff.

Wow, that is far too many Avengers teams. There should be two at most. Call the other teams something else. This just gets confusing.

It does make more sense for the Avengers to be big if they're going to be The planet saving team.

And it does make sense that they'd be subdivided into teams because otherwise a huge roster always gets too unwieldy and then Henry Gyrich slimes his way up and starts whining at you.

And I'll decided to believe that they're all not mostly spotted in New York.

Well, in-universe at least there are kind of excuses. The current "new" team stemmed from a storyline that can be effectively summed up as "Dammit, we need more Avengers." The current Mighty Avengers were named that because social media just sort of decided that a team lead by Luke Cage were obviously Avengers.

Plus it kind of builds up. For example, two Avengers teams formed out of Civil War and the YA out of disassembled and they just sort of stuck.

Very. They've been unable to make Defenders or Heroes for Hire stick since their original incarnations in the 70's, and their other attempts like the Champions and the Marvel Knights completely bombed. Thunderbolts is really their only success story.

Honestly, I think the best way to sidestep all this bullshit in the MCU would be to just use Miles Morales instead.

Maybe you'd be less disappointed if you stopped expecting things to be Carmen Sandiego movies.

And then we can get Josh Keaton as live-action Spider-man!

I mean, he's half white rather than half black, but it could still work!

Wasn't one of the leaked emails about Sony planning an animated Spider-Man movie? And doesn't Sony have the rights to Spectacular?

Honestly, Sony should just do an exchange with Marvel: Movie rights for TV rights. Than Sony can create a good animated series based on Spider-Man, Marvel can do the movies, and everyone is happy.
