Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

The earthquake was pretty obviously Skye as it only happened after she exploded her cocoon.

According to who?

She's Daisy Johnson. Her father is Mister Hyde. Her powerset is the ability to generate earthquakes.

Nothing on screen actually indicated that was Skye. If you didn't have the outside knowledge of who Daisy is in the comics, the sequence of events follows the standard "set off alien device in ancient temple, after it goes off things start shaking and falling down." That Skye has earthquake powers is probably supposed to be a big reveal in the next episode, and is effectively spoilers for those who haven't read all the comics.

Not so. Immediately before the earthquake begins, a visible shockwave distortion in the air emanates from Skye and travels into the ground, clearly indicating that it is Skye, not the Diviner, generating the earthquake.

The camera focuses on the ripple. It's hard to miss.

I'm glad the team finally has some legit superheroes on it. That was one of the things that bugged me about season 1. Does Skye being Quake give us an indication of any plot lines the MCU might be pursuing later? I don't know anything about her.

Well, in the comics, after Fury goes underground, she becomes part of a secret underground S.H.I.E.L.D.-esque organization called the Secret Warriors dedicated to fighting evil from the shadows.

So basically, exactly what she's doing now.

@Lordof Lore They did not remove the mist. The obelisk they were going after throughout the season was revealed to contain a chunk of Terrigen Crystal that then unleashed a small burst of the mist.

Tobias: If you don't know what you're looking for, then yeah, it's actually really easy to miss. The whole thing is shot in a way that isn't obvious what's going on. Cause and effect aren't exactly clear.

And news (no link because phone).

Blair Underwood just scored a recurring role on Agents of SHIELD as Dr. Andrew Garner, May's ex-husband.

James Gunn had this to say about Infinity War.

We really are separate from the Avengers, and I don't think people should assume too many things about the Guardians play in all these. We have our own galaxy to take care of. We have our own galaxy to save. Earth is the Avengers’ province. Thinking that everything is going to come together in a perfect way is not necessarily the way it's going to happen.

Something that's been bugging me: was there anything that says that "the galaxy" is the Milky Way?

[down]I hope so.

Even the softest sci-fi series usually stick to the whole "dark space is impossible to traverse" idea.

[up][up][up][up] Is he saying that in regards to setting up Infinity War, or in regards to the Guardians being in Infinity War?

If it's the former, perfectly fine, as well as being nothing new. If it's the latter... then I think he's really underestimating the scope of the Infinity Gauntlet and the fact that it will threaten the entire universe, and that if keeping them separate from Infinity War is a goal, it might not have been a good idea to have one of the Guardians be Thanos's adopted daughter, or to have one of the Guardians turn their attention to Thanos at the end of the movie. Because that gives people the expectation that they're going to be involved in the upcoming conflict.

IIRC the MCU!Guardians would be sticking more to the Dn A run if they never went to Earth on purpose(they once had to exit a portal and came out in the FF's HQ and had to make them promise never to open that portal again before going back to space IIRC).

Both the Bendis run and animated appearances have them show up on Earth hunting someone only to end up needing the Avengers help(the modern Guardians seem to really love Earth and show up there whenever there is a Event). Of course the Bendis team also have Earth superheroes as members nowadays so...

I don't think it's in regards to Infinity War specifically at all. It's an older statement just talking about how the Guardians fit into the universe in general.

Well, looking at it more deeply, it's a new comment, but it's not about Infinity War at all. He made that statement in response to being asked if Age of Ultron would affect the tone of the next Guardians movie.

Which seems like a patently ridiculous question, but the fact remains; this was not about Infinity War. I am not amused. tongue

Define "new" because I remember that from before the announcement of all the new movies.

Everything I can find about this is from today, so it can't be that new.

Asking about the Guardians and Age of Ultron kind of makes sense since in the comics Ultron went from getting defeated by the Avengers to space where he started a big war where most of the Guardians met each other for the first time. Also had Ultron decide that if you want to end a war you need to think big.
