Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

So according to the massive leak at Sony last week, Sony and Marvel did meet about co-producing the next few Spider-Man films and Marvel tried to get Spider-Man included in Captain America: Civil War, but talks apparently broke down.

Someone in the comment section under the video looked to have suggested Maximus the Mad. I could see him in that role.

I wonder what Spidey could have done in Civil War with a different subject at debate. Presumably they'd still have him unmask, but it'd be for a different purpose now.

If the conflict is government oversight of the heroes as the Russos have hinted, he could still have had a similar role I think. Not so much the revealing the identity part but the symbolic victory of someone who is seen as a freak weirdo counterculture figure by the mainstream agreeing to become one of Tony's government stooges.

I don't know that Spider-Man suddenly appearing and unmasking would have quite the same impact given that he would have to pretty much come out of nowhere in the movie.

It could have just been a cameo. I mean, their previous attempt to bridge the franchises was just having the Oscorp tower be part of the skyline.

I forget, did that actually happen? Or not?

[up][up][up]That's why I said it wouldn't be the same thing, just the idea of trying to get someone seen as a freak or weirdo outlaw to submit to government rule.

[up]No.

I personally feel like it's too late to introduce Spidey into the MCU anyway. :|

I dunno.

I guess I'd have to wait to see how the Netflix shows work, but I think he could exist in something like that. A TV series would be the best fit for him, I think.

I'm not sure you can do Spider-Man on a TV budget. The Netflix heroes work because they're characters who either have no powers or who have powers like flight and super strength, which are very easy to fake without using expensive CGI.

I don't think fake webs are that hard to make. Are they?

Adding Spidey in just feels lazy.

That they considered it worries me that it's basically going to be a Captain America movie In Name Only.

That seems...like a pretty big conclusion to jump to.

[up][up][up]It's not the webs so much as the acrobatics and fight scenes. People are used to very high intensity CGI fights from the character and trying to do that on a TV budget would be a big step down.

Spidey does fulfill a more "everyman hero who is effected by the events of Civil War" niche, which was why his story in Civil War was (imo) one of the more interesting. He's not a secret agent, or a billionaire with government clout who wants to put the world on his shoulders, or even a man cursed with ungodly power like Banner - he's just some goodhearted kid (well, not so much a kid anymore, but the effect is similar) who goes out superheroing because he feels its his responsibility to do so.

Presumably, Marvel could introduce another character to fit that role either during or (ideally) before the movie comes out - Scott Lang could probably do it, for example.

Isn't Scott Lang way more cynical than that?

Not particularly, no. Eric O'Grady on the other hand...

He could be. I mostly know about his backstory, but not about him as an actual person. But he still fills the "everyday person" role better than anyone else in the MCU at this point.

[up][up][up][up][up]I'm just worried about how much screentime he, Iron Man and Black Panther (and anyone else, including holdovers from Avengers 2) would have to be established and act in. Plus, the Russos said it was basically going to be Avengers 2.5, or was that that Winter Soldier was Avengers 1.5?

The statement you're thinking of was something Anthony Mackie said in regards to the Winter Soldier.

EDIT: [nja] Though Mackie's statement makes sense, considering how many superheroes are in Winter Soldier and what a major effect it has on Age of Ultron.

In which case, could The First Avenger be Avengers 0.5? It establishes a good portion of the important bits for the Avengers.

Oh God! Natural light!
