Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

I would definitely dig Pacino as Mephisto.

Y'know, not to open up this can of worms again but I think I could see Pacino as Norman Osborn.

I couldn't. Norman is too... WASP-y.

I would say I don't think he can pull off the haircut, but none of the Spider-Man films actually used the haircut anyway.

Willem Dafoe was pretty much the only thing I liked about the Raimi Spider-Man movies.

Vanessa Redgrave was an excellent Aunt May, too.

Second result when google image search "obsorn hair" (surprising lack of Ozzy). I thought it was photoshopped.

@Son: JK Simmons is basically the living, breathing incarnation of J. Jonah Jameson. Absolutely perfect casting in every way.

[up][up][up][up] Ah, but that guy's hair isn't alternating waves of red and black.

The last hurrah? Nah, I'd do it again.

I don't think the black was ever meant to be literal, it was probably meant to be the shadows in the crevices of the waves.

I do find it vaguely implausible that both he and Harry are not only that ginger but the exact same shade of ginger and the same weird wavy hair.

I always thought their hair was supposed to be some weird style of cornrows.

[up][up][up]Yeah, it is alternating between light brown and black instead. Maybe if that guy was ginger the effect would work better.

[up][up]Is it that uncommon for a ginger to born from another ginger?

No, not at all. Exact same shade? Like, perfectly? Slightly more unlikely. I mean gingers aren't common to begin with, maintaining generic consistency is presumably difficult, especially so directly.

What does Harry's mother look like? It's possible she's also ginger.

The frightfully minute images of Emily Osborn that exist indicate light brown hair. I see they barely gave her existence a second thought.

Comics and cartoons generally depict parents and children with the same hairstyle or colour because it's a lot simpler, and an easier to understand visual indicator than having them be kinda similar.
